Book excerpt: Playing with God is a meditation on finding God and developing spirituality through the everyday joys, heartaches, loves, and challenges that all human beings experience and endure. This series of reflections began with a Lenten discipline and grew into a year-long experiment wherein the author simply tried to pay attention to spiritual realities underlying mundane life. God is everywhere; spirituality infuses everything; the divine energy that defines God is with us always. These are among the truths the author wants to highlight through his reflections on developing spirituality through intentionality. During his spiritual quest, Ostwalt discovered that God was particularly accessible when he (the author) was at playeither with his family, through sports, through the arts, or even when at play with the family dog. Playing with God challenges the reader to learn to play with God by recognizing the divine that resides in our everyday activities.

Book Radical Gratitude

  • Release : 2020-07-16
  • ISBN : 1789741866
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book Radical Gratitude written by PETER MAIDEN and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Christians we should be the most grateful people alive. After all, doesn't the Bible encourage thankfulness and condemn grumbling? Peter Maiden traces the theme of thanksgiving in Scripture, and shows how we can genuinely live counter-cultural lives even in an age of rampant entitlement. With a pastoral heart, he explains how gratitude is the key to joyful, consistent Christian living, discipleship and mission involvement. He focuses on: · how we can develop the habit of thanksgiving · the benefits of gratitude · how we can be grateful, even in hard times Each chapter unpacks biblical truth and grounds it with practical application and personal illustrations. A series of short Bible study questions and reflections (mostly on the Psalms) conclude the chapters. As he was writing this book, poignantly and to his great shock, the author learned that he was suffering from incurable cancer. Far from derailing his message, this unwelcome news energised his efforts as he poured out his vision on the page with his now-limited resources. This is authenticity at its best. This book will be the author's last.

Book Open Letters

  • Author : Jeff Beck
  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2024-08-08
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 137 pages

Download or read book Open Letters written by Jeff Beck and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-08-08 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One quiet morning, the spirit of God stirred Jeff Beck awake. The Lord told him, “Jeff, I want you to pray, fast, and write open letters to the married couple whose relationship is being challenged every day until I release your spirit from writing these letters. These letters are open before Me, each spouse, and yourself as you write them and send them.” Open Letters are words and a challenge to a couple in crisis, so that they can save their marriage. The letters are meant to be used as a tool to facilitate understanding and forgiveness, which can lead to the healing of marriages and even of past relationships. The letters are not meant to condemn or judge those who have been divorced or are on the road to divorce. Rather, they are geared to encourage readers to take an honest look at where they are, at their spouse, and how to move forward. These daily devotionals invite readers to take a journey with their eyes wide open, so that they will understand the ramifications of whatever decision they make. This devotional challenge does not tell couples what to do – it challenges them on their journey before deciding what path to take.

Book The Shofar

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeremy Montagu
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2015-10-16
  • ISBN : 1442250283
  • Pages : 203 pages

Download or read book The Shofar written by Jeremy Montagu and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Shofar, Jeremy Montagu offers a detailed study of the ram’s horn of the Bible, describing its history and use—both ritual and secular—from biblical times to the present. Because the same person normally blows the shofar each year during the Jewish High Holy Days, few are aware of the wide differences among communities around the world: the varying points in the Jewish liturgical service when the shofar is blown, what sound combinations exist, and the many varieties of the instrument. This is the first work of its kind to detail the full range of historical, musical, antiquarian, and religious issues surrounding the ancient instrument with all relevant citations from the Bible, the Talmud, and key post-Talmudic sources. Jeremy Montagu carefully examines horn types, sound characteristics, liturgical uses, and community functions to illustrate how the shofar has reflected local custom, regional needs, and religious practice. Chapters provide difficult-to-find information on how shofars are made; advice on how to choose, prepare, and maintain shofars; and instructions for aspiring blowers on a variety of traditions. With more than sixty photographs from the author’s personal collection, this is an ideal work for Jews and Christians, religious scholars and musicologists, and even practicing musicians seeking to understand the crucial role of this instrument in the life of a people.

Book Testing Times Globalisation and Investing Theology in East Africa

Download or read book Testing Times Globalisation and Investing Theology in East Africa written by Henry Settimba and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main topic of this book is the tendency among young people in East Africa to turn from the traditional Church towards new charismatic movements such as the Balokole, which emphasise material over spiritual wealth. The book will examine the reasons for this and its possible effects; it will consider the implications for the Church and possible action to take. The book is divided into 9 chapters. Chapter 1 gives an overview of the history of the Christian Church, especially in the context of its commitment or otherwise to fighting poverty, and other problems which have contributed to the rise of the Balokole. Ideas on unity, catholicity and holiness are discussed in relation to the Church’s duties, especially the Apostolic tradition of carrying on Christ’s mission. Chapter 2 turns to young people’s views of the Church and its role. It argues that love, the basis of the Christian message, must imply a practical duty of care; and considers whether the Church’s failure to offer real help is connected with young people’s growing preference for non-traditional religion. It also looks at other problems such as family breakdown and unemployment, which are facing young people. Chapter 3 explores the Balokole movement and its links (or, mainly, absence of links) to established Churches. Its similarity to American movements such as Word of Faith is considered, and its message of ‘prosperity teaching’ is examined. As well as criticising Balokole distortion of Biblical messages about wealth and other matters, the chapter praises the way it incorporates traditional African elements, such as dance and music, into its worship. Should the traditional Church consider doing the same? In Chapter 4, contextual theology is discussed, particularly liberation theology. This Latin American development is considered in the context of contemporary African problems including recent ethnic conflict, widespread corruption and injustice. It is argued that liberation theology – a practical commitment to fighting poverty and injustice – is both a Christian duty and the best way to prevent the further spread of movements like the Bakolole. Chapter 5 returns to the American origins of the Bakolole movement, and gives an overview of various scholars who have attacked the ‘Word of Faith’ movement. It uses this criticism of the often corrupt, exploitative leaders of such movements as an opportunity to urge all leaders – including Church leaders – to reflect on and improve their own practice. Chapter 6 looks at the plight of young people in East Africa. It acknowledges the fact that the Bakolole have often given these people hope and a voice where all other institutions have failed them. As neither their families nor their governments are able to help, it is argued that the Church must fulfil its mission to serve as both family and community network, even if this means abandoning its long-standing habit of not getting involved in politics. Chapter 7 identifies the root cause of many of the problems discussed in the previous chapter: corruption. It explores the way bribery; nepotism and tribalism have poisoned East African political life, undermined the rule of law and led to grave injustices such as the treatment of the Buganda people. If this culture is to end, the Church must take the lead, and also root out corruption in its own ranks. In Chapter 8, practical ways of applying liberation theology are discussed. The chapter mentions worldwide organisations committed to fighting poverty, with which the Church could work, and looks at examples from recent history such as the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. It considers the various criticisms of liberation theology which have been made by conservative elements, and refutes these, looking at the Christian and Biblical roots of modern anti-poverty movements. The Church’s role as the conscience of society is emphasised. Chapter 9 considers what the Church will need to do in order to eradicate poverty and create a more just society. It argues for careful selection of leaders in both religious and political organisations; and for regular scrutiny of their actions. It reiterates the author’s belief in the Church as the centre of the community, with a responsibility in all areas of social and economic as well as spiritual life. The book ends with a plea for the Church to take action to improve the lives of its members and prevent them from being exploited by unscrupulous forces.

Book Between Cross and Resurrection

Download or read book Between Cross and Resurrection written by Alan E. Lewis and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003-06-20 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of Christian history the church has given no place to Holy Saturday in its liturgy or worship. Yet the space dividing Calvary and the Garden may be the best place from which to reflect on the meaning of Christ's death and resurrection. This superb work by the late Alan Lewis develops on a grand scale and in great detail a theology of Holy Saturday. The first comprehensive theology of Holy Saturday ever written, Between Cross and Resurrectionshows that at the center of the biblical story and the church's creed lies a three-day narrative. Lewis explores the meaning of Holy Saturday -- the restless day of burial and waiting -- from the perspectives of narrative (hearing the story), doctrine (thinking the story), and ethics (living the story). Along the way he visits as many spiritual themes as possible in order to demonstrate the range of topics that take on fresh meaning when viewed from the vantage point of Holy Saturday.Between Cross and Resurrection is not only incisive and elegantly written, but it is also a uniquely moving work deeply rooted in Christian experience. While writing this book Lewis experienced his own Holy Saturday in suffering from and finally succumbing to cancer. He considered Between Cross and Resurrection to be the culmination of his life's work.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.
