Book Photosynthesis Bibliography Volume 10 1 1979

Download or read book Photosynthesis Bibliography Volume 10 1 1979 written by Zdenek Sesták and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982-03-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bibl iography includes papers in all f. ields of photosynthesis research - from stu dies of rrDdel biochemical and biophysical systems of the photosynthesis mechanism to primary production studied by the so-cal led growth analysis. In addition to papers devoted entirely to photosynthesis, papers on other topics are included if they con tain data on photosynthetic activity, photorespiration, chloroplast structure, chlo rophyll and carotenoid synthesis and destruction, etc. , or if they contain valuable methodological information (measurement of selected environmental factors, leaf area, etc. ). In many branches it has been difficult to define the I imits of interest for photosynthesis researchers. This pl-oblem has arisen e. g. in topics deal ing with the transfer of gases, where - in addition to the papers on carbon dioxide transfer - so me papers on water vapour transfer are included, these being of general appl ication or bringing new approaches. On the other hand, many papers deal ing with the anatomy and physiology of stomata have been omitted, if the aspect of carbon dioxide or water vapour exchange has not been discussed. This volume contains references to papers publ ished in the year 1979, and, similarly to Vol. 9, also addenda including references published in the preceding peri od (-i. e. 1966 to 1(78), The numbers of these additional references are labelled with an asterisk (*) in the I ist of references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology series has turned several times to the topic of photosynthesis. In the original series, two volumes edited by A. PIRSON and published in 1960 provided a broad overview of the entire field. Although the New Series has devoted three volumes to the same topic, the overall breadth of the coverage has had to be restricted to allow for greater in-depth treatment of three major areas of modern photosynthesis research: I. Photosynthetic Elec tron Transport and Photophosphorylation (Volume 5 edited by A. TREBST and M. AvRON, and published in 1977); II. Photosynthetic Carbon Metabolism and Related Processes (Volume 6 edited by M. GIBBS and E. LATZKO, and published in 1979); and III. Photosynthetic Membranes and Light-Harvesting Systems (this volume). As we approached the organization of the current volume, we chose a set of topics for coverage that would complement the earlier volumes, as well as provide updates of areas that have seen major advances in recent years. In addition, we wanted to emphasize the following changes in the study of photo synthetic systems which have become increasingly important since 1977: the trend toward increased integration of biochemical and biophysical approaches to study photosynthetic membranes and light-harvesting systems, and a renewed appreciation of the structural parameters of membrane organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As editor of the two-part Volume V on photosynthesis in RUHLAND'S Encyclopedia, the forerunner of this series published in 1960, I have been approached by the editors of the present volume to provide a short preface. The justification for following this suggestion lies in the great changes which have been taking place in biology in the two decades between these publications, changes which are reflected in the new editorial plan. Twenty years ago it appeared convenient and formally easy to consider photo synthesis as a clearly separated field of research, which could be dealt with under two major headings: one presenting primarily photochemical and biochemical prin ciples, the other physiological and environmental studies. Such a partition, however, as far as aims and opinions of the authors were concerned, resulted in a rather heterogeneous volume. Today, the tendency in experimental biology is towards a merger of previously distinct disciplines. Biochemists and biophysicists have developed their methods to such an extent that, over and above the analysis of individual reaction sequences, work on the manifold interrelationships among cellular activities has become in creasingly possible. Joining them in growing numbers are the physiologists and ecologists with their wealth of information on activity changes in vivo and on the variability and efficiency of the organisms concerned. Furthermore, biochemists, biophysicists and physiologists also now share a lively interest in ultrastructure research, the results and implications of which, through continually improving methodology, have generated important stimuli for the work in the field of cell function.

Book Molecular Genetics of Photosynthesis

Download or read book Molecular Genetics of Photosynthesis written by Bertil Andersson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photosynthesis is one of the most active areas of plant science research. Advances in molecular biology technology have profoundly affected the work in this area and have opened up the possibility of manipulating the genes involved in photosynthesis. The field is expanding, and this book provides a compilation of authoritative reviews covering a variety of important issues.

Book excerpt: The algae are a diverse group of organisms with forms that range in size from less than a micron in diameter to over ten meters in length. Small « 1 JLm diam) unicellular forms dominate the open waters of the oceans and large lakes. Large multicellular forms often form a large component of the autotrophic biomass of shallow waters at the periphery of lakes and oceans but have also been found on seamounts in clear open ocean waters at depths up to several hundred meters (Littler and Littler, 1985). Phytoplankton in the sea probably account for more than 50% of global photosynthesis, although there is considerable uncertainty about this estimate. In addition, many symbiotic associations between unicellu lar algae and heterotrophic or autotrophic organisms have been identi fied, and algae can be found in a diverse range of terrestrial environ ments, ranging from polar to desert regions. The most important common biochemical attribute that unites the algae is their ability to split water, producing molecular oxygen during photosynthesis and concomi tantly assimilating carbon dioxide. This attribute is shared with the terres trial plants, cyanobacteria and chloroxybacteria. Although vascular plants are excluded from this review, we employ a broad definition of algae that includes the photosynthetic, oxygenic procaryotes. Measurements of gas exchange are fundamental to most biochemical, physiological and ecological investigations of the algae.
