Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Literature In the matter of critical estimates the writer of a text-book finds himself in a position of uncomfortable responsibility. Immature students, unused to judgment, and unable to test the opinions delivered to them, often take those opinions with out question, like so much gospel. At first thought, the only safe course would seem to lie in rigidly following current esti mates. But it should be possible to preserve independence of judgment without giving way to personal vagary, and at the worst a little heresy may serve to stimulate the student's crit ical faculty. After all, only time can determine where the heresy lies. Current criticism, for instance, tends perceptibly to depreciate our native literature. Possibly one who, like the writer of this book, has an honest admiration for our less academic writers, and ventures to set himself against this attitude, may find himself justified in the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Success in Literature To collect from many sources into a single volume of moderate dimensions such coun sels of writers of renown as might be ser viceable to men of letters is the scope of the present work. The available materials, including frequent reiteration of similar pre cepts, are so vast that it is impossible to attempt a comprehensive record. A selection has been, therefore, made of what has ap peared likely to be most acceptable rather to professional authors than to those who are only beginners or aspirants but it is hoped that what is offered may prove serviceable to all. The labours of the compilers have con sisted almost exclusively in co-ordinating and collating the views of indisputable authorities (to whose works references are given); and while there may be, in certain cases, room for. Book English Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Literature Classic Reprint written by Alphonso Gerald Newcomer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature As for the aesthetic appreciation of literature, in distinction from colder analysis, the author is firmly of the opinion that, how ever difficult the former may be to teach, it is the main end of ele mentary literary study. He who aims at scholarship will take a different view; but for the average student, the chief office of literature is to enrich the leisure of his life. A text-book based on such a conception need not assume to be rigorously critical; it does not set before itself the object of enabling students to sit in absolutely dispassionate judgment upon the works they are invited to enjoy. The author is therefore prepared to hear with equanimity the charge that he has sometimes been guilty of over-praise. At the same time he trusts that no panegyric has been lightly evoked or mistakenly bestowed, - that even his superlatives, when consideration is taken of the qualifications that attend them and allowance made for honest differences of opinion, will be found to have been not thoughtlessly employed. To be appreciative without becoming uncritical, and above all without losing grasp of substance, has been the constant aim. Book Literary Workers

Download or read book Literary Workers written by John George Hargreaves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Workers: Or Pilgrims to the Temple of Honour There are various productions bearing more or less, upon the same topic, and notably amongst these stands the elder Disraeli's sketch of the Literary Character, to which the writer is largely indebted. It is not in any spirit of rivalry that he adds another to the list; but in the belief that the intrinsic charm of the theme will float this and many other volumes of the kind. The book is intended more especially for literary aspirants, and its purpose will be answered if it affords any genial stimulus to readers who may wish to rank amongst the toilers with the Pen. The author has endeavoured to invest literary genius with something of a personal character by tracing its story (cursorily, of course) in the form of a biography from the cradle to the grave. Book The Power of Print in Modern China

Download or read book The Power of Print in Modern China written by Robert Culp and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid early twentieth-century China’s epochal shifts, a vital and prolific commercial publishing industry emerged. Recruiting late Qing literati, foreign-trained academics, and recent graduates of the modernized school system to work as authors and editors, publishers produced textbooks, reference books, book series, and reprints of classical texts in large quantities at a significant profit. Work for major publishers provided a living to many Chinese intellectuals and offered them a platform to transform Chinese cultural life. In The Power of Print in Modern China, Robert Culp explores the world of commercial publishing to offer a new perspective on modern China’s cultural transformations. Culp examines China’s largest and most influential publishing companies—Commercial Press, Zhonghua Book Company, and World Book Company—during the late Qing and Republican periods and into the early years of the People’s Republic. He reconstructs editors’ cultural activities and work lives as a lens onto the role of intellectuals in cultural change. Examining China’s distinct modes of industrial publishing, Culp explains the emergence of the modern Chinese intellectual through commercial and industrial processes rather than solely through political revolution and social movements. An original account of Chinese intellectual and cultural history as well as global book history, The Power of Print in Modern China illuminates the production of new forms of knowledge and culture in the twentieth century.

Book The Creative Art of Fiction Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Creative Art of Fiction Classic Reprint written by H. A. Davidson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creative Art of Fiction Not all fiction is artistically great, or even correct, nor is immediate success a fair test of quality. The relation of a piece of literature to the reading public is determined by many and complex elements. In the beginning, theartistic quality of the novel may weigh least in its popularity. Maximum sales are often due to special interest in the subject at the time of publication, as in the case of Robert Elsntere, le Heavenly Twins, T riloy, and a score of other novels that have shot, like meteors, across the literary firmament, and disappeared. Or, the story may contain a picture, photographically real, of life and human interest in one generation, or in a definite locality, and, without art in the presentation, maintain a firm hold upon the hearts of readers who have experienced, even remotely, the life depicted. Such are stories of colonial adventure under conditions that have passed, traditionally, to the descendants of the first settlers; such is David Harnnt, and, possibly, The Bonnie Brzer Bus/z. Not until stories of this kind have outlived the generation and the conditions of life that gave them birth, can it be seen whether art in the presentation mingles with human interest in the subject in such a manner as to secure permanence. Book A Study of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of American Literature Classic Reprint written by William Cranston Lawton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of American Literature In this volume the attempt has been made to distinguish the salient epochs in our literature, brief though the story is. The relation of the artist and his work to the general life of his time and of his people has been frequently recalled. This relation is especially illustrated in the chronological tables, which may be supplemented from the regular textbooks in American history. Nevertheless, the treatment in our text itself is in the main biographical. That is, the effort has almost always been to make the single life appear an articulated and rational whole. This method craves far more space than was here available; but, as Miss Scudder remarks of her similar undertaking for English literature, any such volume as ours must serve merely as an introduction to far wider reading. The writer believes that biographical treatment is the most intelligible to the young reader. It also seems to him the most truthful. That the artist, more than other men, can escape largely from local or temporal limitations, and find his spiritual kin, seems undeniable; yet from his truest self he cannot escape. Even when the artistic activity seems most detached from the man, as in Hawthorne, or even in Poe, the work will be better understood by a sympathetic study of the life, the whole life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies in Literature That these brief chapters may prove helpful to readers of books who desire to become students of literature, is the hope which the writer ventures to cherish in the face of defects more obvious to him than to the most unsympathetic critic. These Studies are not critical but interpretative they are neither exhaustive nor inclusive; they are mainly hints and suggestions. Each chapter might be elaborated into a volume. If they serve to indi cate the leading lines of literary development, the fundamental divisions and distinctions, the deep and vital tendencies, they will accomplish the end for which they were written. That they represent deep convictions concerning the significance of literature rather than a purely critical attitude, will be apparent to the most indifferent reader. The writer is glad of an Opportunity of putting forth what he trusts may be, to some readers at least, a book of insight, rather than a contribution to the. Book New Literary Values

Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Literary Values: Studies in Modern Literature This is not to say that no criticism is good which does not take the form of philosophical investiga tion, but that such investigation must precede any further discussion. Criticism must assume a stable standard of values and constant points of reference, and the discovery of these must be made by each critic for himself. Otherwise there cannot even be an intelligent handling of vocabulary. What can the critic do with such words as aesthetic, form, ideal, significant, unless he has satisfied himself about their meaning by his own investigations? How often do we see quite un defined terms flung about loosely in critical writing which passes for profound! Definition of terms is no simple matter it is not the beginning of a thought-process but the end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Literary Year Book for the Year 1921 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Literary Year Book for the Year 1921 Classic Reprint written by Mark Meredith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-02 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Year-Book for the Year 1921 Somewhat contrary to the usual procedure this Introduction to the 1921 Edition Of the literary year book has been written when all the work was completed. Handicapped somewhat by the lack of time for very careful corrections there are a number of clerical and printers' errors in the Book, which a careful reader will easily distinguish and read correctly. They are unfortunately inseparable from rush-work, and acknowledgments must be given to the printers and binders for their very helpful assistance. An endeavour has been made in the present volume to shed the halo of distinguished letters and to produce a book which will be really helpful in the common task Of the work-a-day world of the writer. One's first attempt at such a task can scarcely be successful, but if in a small measure the present edition is of some service to its users the Editor will feel repaid for the work involved. It has been a labour which has given him extreme pleasure, but it is his wish to be of still further service right throughout 1921 to the readers Of the Book, and any questions or letters addressed to him will always have careful attention. In the interests Of the authors themselves, particular attention is directed to the section on Literary Property (p. And the importance of Observing the suggestions laid down there cannot be over-emphasised. In the main the reader will find that there is more matter of use to him in this than in previous volumes, and with an earlier preparation Of the 1922 edition than was possible with this one, it is hoped that the scope of the Book will be considerably extended. Suggestions will receive careful consideration. It is gratifying to note in to-day's New Year's Honours the names of Mr. T. J. Bennett, m.p., for many years Editor Of the Times of India, Mr. William Davies, Editor of the Western Mail, Mr. Dawson Williams, M.D., Editor of the British Medical Journal, Mr. Samuel Squire Spriggs, M.D., Editor of the Lancet, and Mr. Wm. Denham, author and writer. One would like to see an increasing recognition by the State of men of letters and journalists, with a decreasing reward for mere political ends. The best achievements of humanity are fostered more by real literature and clean press work than by politics, and until the happy time of recognition arrives the lot of the writer and artist will remain difficult.
