Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s phytodiversity is one of the most significant in the world. India is one of the twelve mega-biodiversity centers in the world and also an important center of origin of agrobiodiversity. It is therefore, very important to study, document and conserve the plant wealth of India and also of the world before its possible extinction. There are convincing scientific, economic and sociological reasons for giving priority to the conservation of the major centers of plant diversity throughout the world. The strategies to conserve the biodiversity include establishment of protected area network and corridors with emphasis on appropriate levels of management, reduction of anthropogenic pressure on natural populations by cultivating them elsewhere, programmes of augmentation, reintroduction and introduction of target taxa, restoration of degraded habitats, etc. The conservation strategies can be either, in-situ conservation of genetic resources within their ecosystem and natural habitat or ex-situ conservation of components of genetic material of biological diversity outside their natural habitat. The choice of conservation strategy depends upon the nature of the material to be conserved, i.e., the life cycle and mode of reproduction, size of individual population and ecological status. Ex-situ techniques include the establishment of botanical and zoological gardens, banks of pollen, seed tissue culture, DNA, etc. Establishment of forest reserves, national parks, protected areas and on farm conservation of valuable plant varieties is being promoted to facilitate their in-situ conservation.

Book Biodiversity and Sustainable Utilization of Biological Resources

Download or read book Biodiversity and Sustainable Utilization of Biological Resources written by T.R. Sahu and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book entitled ``Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Biological Resource'' is a result of National Conference on sustainable Utilization of Biological Resources held during 16-18 March, 2001, at Department of Botany, Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidayalaya, Sagar (M.P.) India. Biological diversity is the result of interaction between climate, organisms, topography, parent soil materials, time and heredity. The tropics are the ideal places for such an interaction. Indian region having a geographical area of 339 million hectares, is quite rich in biodiversity with a sizeable percentage of endemic flora and fauna. This richness in biodiversity is due to immense variety of climate and altitudinal conditions coupled with varied ecological habitats. He from the humid tropical Western Ghat to the hot deserts of Rajasthan, from the cold desert of Ladak and the icy mountain of Himalayas to the worm coast of peninsular India. The country is very important Vavilovian center of biodiversity and origin of over 167 important cultivated plant species and some domesticated animals. The present books contains articles by eminent scientists of the country on different aspects related to the subject. It contains up-to-date information about the application of biotechnology to meet the ever increasing demand of food, medicine, crop plants and management of environments. The articles related to Botanic Gardens aims to help quantify the global strategy for plant conservation (GSPC) adopted by the convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2002. This will help to reaffirm the commitment of Botanic Gardens to plant conservation, education awareness, implementation of the International Agenda for Botanic Gardens in conservation and the promotion of sustainable development and sustainable living. Scholars and students of Botany, Ethnobotany, Agriculture, Forestry, Conservation, Ecology and Environment will find this book very useful and informative.

Download or read book Development Environment and Migration written by S. Irudaya Rajan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-05-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings the discourses around social justice and sustainable development back into focus by looking at India’s mining sector and the state’s frameworks for economic development. The chapters in this volume analyse mining practices in the mineral-rich areas of eastern India through various case studies and highlight their immense human and environmental costs. This volume critically analyses selected mining projects in India that have resulted in large-scale displacements, impoverishment and environmental degradation. It identifies the gaps in policy, its implementation, and the lack of safeguards which threaten the socio-economic and ecological ways of life and the livelihoods of the local communities. Based on documents, reports, interviews and field observations, this book engages with the issues surrounding the mining sector, e.g., land acquisition, land use and degradation, the politics of compensation, policies, agitation and social mobilisation, health and agriculture, livelihood and gender. It further provides an assessment of local political economies and offers suggestive frameworks for inclusive growth in this sector. This book will be of interest to students and researchers exploring the disciplines of development studies, sociology, law and governance, human ecology and economics.

Book Ethnic Knowledge and Perspectives of Medicinal Plants

Download or read book Ethnic Knowledge and Perspectives of Medicinal Plants written by Münir Öztürk and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new 2-volume set aims to share and preserve ethnic and traditional knowledge of herbal medicine and treatments, while also emphasizing the link between biodiversity, human nutrition, and food security. Ethnic Knowledge and Perspectives of Medicinal Plants is divided into two volumes, with volume 1 focusing on the traditional use of curative properties and treatment strategies of medicinal plants, and volume 2 addressing the varied nutritional and dietary benefits of medicinal plants and the practice of Ayurveda. Both volumes stress the importance of bioresources for human nutrition and nutraceuticals based on ethnic knowledge and the need for efforts to protect biodiversity in many regions rich with medicinal plants. Exploring the benefits of medicinal plants in disease prevention, treatment, and management, Volume 1 discusses the traditional use of medicinal plants as promising therapeutics for cancer, liver conditions, COVID-19, and other human ailments. It examines the efficacy of Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine, Indian traditional medicine, and other ethnic herbal practices used by indigenous peoples of Azerbaijan, South America, Turkey, India, etc. A variety of plants are discussed, and the ethnomedicinal applications of over 100 wild mushrooms for their medicinal and healthcare purposes are elaborated on. While volume 1 focuses primarily on natural plant resources for addressing specific health issues, volume 2 looks at traditional medicinal plant use for their nutritional and dietary benefits, while also encouraging the preservation of biodiversity for healthy and sustainable diets. The volume presents information on over 2200 vascular plant taxa from 127 families as well as many taxa from leaf parts, fruits, underground parts, floral parts, seeds, and more that have potential use as edible food plants. Ethnic knowledge on the wild edible mushrooms is an emerging area, which is unique and is dependent on the folk knowledge of tribals; this volume discusses the unique nutritional attributes of wild edible mushrooms (206 species belonging to 73 genera) in Southern India. The authors look at various lichens as nutritional aids and medicine and as flavoring agents and spices. Fucoidans derived from the seaweeds (and spirulina) are described for their antioxidant activity, nutritional and anti-aging properties, antiviral activities, anti-cancer properties, anti-diabetic properties, and more. The authors also examine how ethnicity affects healthcare/nutritive systems at different levels through various dynamics such as lower income, inability for services uptake, disputes among different ethnic groups, cultural attitudes (some ethnic group are vegetarian), lack of socio-economic resources, and disease prevalence. Together, these two important volumes aim to preserve and disseminate the valuable ethnic knowledge of medicinal plants gained over thousands of years and to promote the value of integrating and safeguarding biodiversity.
