Book Reference Method for the Determination of Polychlorinated Dibenzo para dioxins PCDDs and Polychlorinated Dibenzofurans PCDFs in Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents

Download or read book Reference Method for the Determination of Polychlorinated Dibenzo para dioxins PCDDs and Polychlorinated Dibenzofurans PCDFs in Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents written by Canada. Environment Canada and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes an analytical methodology developed in support of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. The methodology is used to identify and quantify trace amounts of polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in pulp and paper mill effluents. The method detection limit depends on sample matrix characteristics and can be as low as 2-20 pg/L (parts per quadrillion) for PCDD and PCDF cogeners. The report describes sample collection, extraction, cleanup, chromatographic separation, and identification and quantification of tetra- through octa-CDD/CDF cogeners, including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-para-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzofuran (2,3,7,8-TCDF).

Book Analysis of Plant Waste Materials

Download or read book Analysis of Plant Waste Materials written by Hans F. Linskens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Methods of Plant Analysis When the handbook Modern Methods of Plant Analysis, was first introduced in 1954, the considerations were: 1. the dependence of scientific progress in biology on the improvement of existing and the introduction of new methods; 2. the difficulty in finding many new analytical methods in specialized journals which are normally not accessible to experimental plant biologists; 3. the fact that in the methods sections of papers the description of methods is frequently so compact, or even sometimes so incomplete, that it is difficult to reproduce experiments. These considerations still stand today. The series was highly successful, seven volumes appearing between 1956 and 1964. Since there is still today a demand for the old series, the publisher has decided to resume publication of Modern Methods of Plant Analysis. It is hoped that the New Series will be just as acceptable to those working in plant sciences and related fields as the early volumes undoubtedly were. It is difficult to single out the major reasons for the success of any publication, but we believe that the methods published in the first series were up-to-date at the time and presented in a way that made description, as applied to plant material, complete in itself with little need to consult other publications. Contribution authors have attempted to follow these guidelines in this New Series of volumes. Editorial The earlier series of Modern Methods of Plant Analysis was initiated by Michel V.

Book Green Chemistry and Sustainability in Pulp and Paper Industry

Download or read book Green Chemistry and Sustainability in Pulp and Paper Industry written by Pratima Bajpai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-23 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features in-depth and thorough coverage of Minimum Impact Mill Technologies which can meet the environmental challenges of the pulp and paper industry and also discusses Mills and Fiberlines that encompass “State-of-the-Art” technology and management practices. The minimum impact mill does not mean "zero effluent", nor is it exclusive to one bleaching concept. It is a much bigger concept which means that significant progress must be made in the following areas: Water Management, Internal Chemical Management, Energy Management, Control and Discharge of Non-Process Elements and Removal of Hazardous Pollutants. At the moment, there is no bleached kraft pulp mill operating with zero effluent. With the rise in environmental awareness due to the lobbying by environmental organizations and with increased government regulation there is now a trend towards sustainability in the pulp and paper industry. Sustainable pulp and paper manufacturing requires a holistic view of the manufacturing process. During the last decade, there have been revolutionary technical developments in pulping, bleaching and chemical recovery technology. These developments have made it possible to further reduce loads in effluents and airborne emissions. Thus, there has been a strong progress towards minimum impact mills in the pulp and paper industry. The minimum-impact mill is a holistic manufacturing concept that encompasses environmental management systems, compliance with environmental laws and regulations and manufacturing technologies.

Book National Science Assessment on Dioxins and Furans in the Canadian Aquatic Environment

Download or read book National Science Assessment on Dioxins and Furans in the Canadian Aquatic Environment written by Canada. Water Policy and Coordination Directorate and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment documents the current status of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in Canada's aquatic environment, based largely on scientific supporting documents to the Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines & with updated information & data wherever available. Chapters cover the following topics: physico-chemicals properties of PCDD/Fs and their mode of toxic action; sources (natural & anthropogenic) & releases of PCDD/Fs to the Canadian environment; fate & behaviour of PCDD/Fs in aquatic systems & biota; Canadian environmental levels of PCDD/Fs in air, water, sediment, & aquatic organisms; toxic effects of PCDD/Fs observed in aquatic & semi-aquatic organisms (including water-, sediment-, & dietary-based toxicity), and the initiatives under way to manage PCDD/Fs in the Canadian environment as well as best management practices. The final section discusses emerging issues such as recent advances in waste incineration, PCDD/F treatment in the pulp & paper industry, and use of biological screening in toxicity determination.

Book Guidance Manual on Sampling Analysis and Data Management for Contaminated Sites

Download or read book Guidance Manual on Sampling Analysis and Data Management for Contaminated Sites written by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment and published by Canadian. This book was released on 1993 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a consistent approach to sampling, analysis, and data management for contaminated sites nationally. The manual stresses the significance of quality assurance/quality control and planning, and emphasizes the interdependence of sampling, analysis, and data management objectives. This volume provides method summaries for the analytes in a consistent format that identifies all the information needed to decide whether to use that method in preference to another, and if so, what major analytical instrumentation would be required. A method summary includes sample preparation, potential inferences, quality control requirements, comments on use, and comparison with other methods when applicable. A list of unpublished analytical methods that are used by various federal, provincial, and commercial laboratories is provided in an appendix.
