Book History of Mathematical Sciences

Download or read book History of Mathematical Sciences written by Lu¡s Saraiva and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interaction between Europe and East Asia between the 16th and the 18th centuries in the field of mathematical sciences, bringing to the fore the role of Portugal as an agent of transmission of European science to East Asia. It is an important contribution to understanding this fundamental period of scientific history, beginning with the arrival of Vasco da Gama in India in 1498 and ending with the expulsion of the Society of Jesus from Portugal in 1759. The former event opened a new era in relations between Europe and Asia, in particular regarding the circulation of scientific knowledge, leading to major social and intellectual changes in both continents. The Society of Jesus controlled education in Portugal and in the Empire. It was central to the network of knowledge transmission until the Society was expelled from Portugal in 1759.The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: ? Book Anachronisms in the History of Mathematics

Download or read book Anachronisms in the History of Mathematics written by Niccolò Guicciardini and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controversial matters surrounding the notion of anachronism are difficult ones: they have been broached by literary and art critics, by philosophers, as well as by historians of science. This book adopts a bottom-up approach to the many problems concerning anachronism in the history of mathematics. Some of the leading scholars in the field of history of mathematics reflect on the applicability of present-day mathematical language, concepts, standards, disciplinary boundaries, indeed notions of mathematics itself, to well-chosen historical case studies belonging to the mathematics of the past, in European and non-European cultures. A detailed introduction describes the key themes and binds the various chapters together. The interdisciplinary and transcultural approach adopted allows this volume to cover topics important for history of mathematics, history of the physical sciences, history of science, philosophy of mathematics, history of philosophy, methodology of history, non-European science, and the transmission of mathematical knowledge across cultures.

Book Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences

Download or read book Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences written by I. Grattan-Guinness and published by . This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 1806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics is one of the most basic -- and most ancient -- types of knowledge. Yet the details of its historical development remain obscure to all but a few specialists. The two-volume Companion Encyclopedia of the History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences recovers this mathematical heritage, bringing together many of the world's leading historians of mathematics to examine the history and philosophy of the mathematical sciences in a cultural context, tracing their evolution from ancient times to the twentieth century. In 176 concise articles divided into twelve parts, contributors describe and analyze the variety of problems, theories, proofs, and techniques in all areas of pure and applied mathematics, including probability and statistics. This indispensable reference work demonstrates the continuing importance of mathematics and its use in physics, astronomy, engineering, computer science, philosophy, and the social sciences. Also addressed is the history of higher education in mathematics. Carefully illustrated, with annotated bibliographies of sources for each article, The Companion Encyclopedia is a valuable research tool for students and teachers in all branches of mathematics. Contents of Volume 1: -Ancient and Non-Western Traditions -The Western Middle Ages and the Renaissance -Calculus and Mathematical Analysis -Functions, Series, and Methods in Analysis -Logic, Set Theories, and the Foundations of Mathematics -Algebras and Number Theory Contents of Volume 2: -Geometries and Topology -Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering -Physics, Mathematical Physics, and Electrical Engineering -Probability, Statistics, and the Social Sciences -Higher Education andInstitutions -Mathematics and Culture -Select Bibliography, Chronology, Biographical Notes, and Index

Book The Jesuits the Padroado and East Asian Science 1552 1773

Download or read book The Jesuits the Padroado and East Asian Science 1552 1773 written by Lu¡s Saraiva and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 15th century, Portugal was given the oversight (Padroado) of all Catholic missions in Asia. The Society of Jesus played a major role in this enterprise of evangelization, which in Jesuit hands led to the transmission of major elements of European mathematical sciences to East Asia. The essays in this volume present important new data and analysis on the extent to and ways in which Jesuit scientific culture and Portuguese policies regarding education, trade and mission shaped the reception of ?Western learning? in China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam in the early modern period.

Book History of Mathematical Sciences Portugal and East Asia V

Download or read book History of Mathematical Sciences Portugal and East Asia V written by Saraiva Luis M R and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, research on the history of early modern cartography has undergone remarkable developments. At the same time, European travel accounts and works on China and Japan are also being investigated more systematically. Finally, studies of translations between European and East Asian languages have highlighted the more general issue of how and to what extent representations of the world that prevailed at one end of Eurasia informed and influenced the representations prevailing at the other end of the continent, sometimes to the point that novel forms of representations were being generated. This volume brings together a series of essays on this theme. It is divided into five sections which address as many topics: the textual representation of the 'Other'; 16th- and 17th-century maps of China, Japan and Vietnam; the phenomenon of hybridisation in visual representations; knowledge and representations of the world in Europe and East Asia; and the circulation of representations of the heavens in astronomy between these two regions.
