Download or read book Epistemic Defeat written by Jan Constantin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of well-developed theories shed light on the question, under what circumstances our beliefs enjoy epistemic justification. Yet, comparatively little is known about epistemic defeat—when new information causes the loss of epistemic justification. This book proposes and defends a detailed account of epistemic defeaters. The main kinds of defeaters are analyzed in detail and integrated into a general framework that aims to explain how beliefs lose justification. It is argued that defeaters introduce incompatibilities into a noetic system and thereby prompt a structured re-evaluation process that makes a justified reinstatement of the defeated belief impossible. The account is then applied to the topic of disagreement, where it is used in an argument for conciliationism, as well as a new explanation for higher-order defeat. Throughout the book, the notion of defeat is the center of attention, while a number of new issues are discussed at the intersections of defeat and justification. Specifically, new problems are raised for broadly internalist accounts of defeat, a fully descriptive reliabilist account of defeat is provided, and the case for normative defeat is revisited.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Models and simulations are widely being used for design, optimization, fault detection and diagnosis, and various other decision-making purposes. Increasingly, models are developed at different scales and levels, all the way from molecular level to the large-scale process systems scale. Modelling of Chemical Process Systems gives readers a feel for the multiscale modelling. As models have been developed for various applications, a general systematic method for building model has emerged. This book starts with the history of modelling and its usefulness, describing modelling steps in detail. Examples have been chosen carefully from both conventional chemical process systems to contemporary systems, including fuel cell and bioprocesses. Modelling theories are complemented with case studies that explain step-by-step modelling methodologies. This book also introduces the application of machine learning techniques to model chemical process systems. Book Handbook of Psychotherapy Integration

Download or read book Handbook of Psychotherapy Integration written by John C. Norcross and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed by one reviewer as "the bible of the integration movement," the inaugural edition of Handbook of Psychotherapy Integration was the first compilation of the early integrative approaches to therapy. Since its publication psychotherapy integration has grown into a mature, empirically supported, and international movement, and the current edition provides a comprehensive review of what has been done. Reflecting the considerable advances in the field since the previous edition's release in 2005, this third edition of Handbook of Psychotherapy Integration continues to be the state-of-the-art description of psychotherapy integration and its clinical practices by some of its most distinguished proponents. Six chapters new to this edition describe growing areas of psychotherapy research and practice: common factors therapy, principle-based integration, integrative psychotherapy with children, mixing psychotherapy and self-help, integrating research and practice, and international themes. The latter two of these constitute contemporary thrusts in the integration movement: blending research and practice, and recognizing its international nature. Also closely examined are the concepts, history, training, research, global themes, and future of psychotherapy integration. Each chapter includes a new section on cultural considerations, and an emphasis is placed throughout the volume on outcome research. Charting the remarkable evolution of psychotherapy integration itself, the third edition of this Handbook will continue to prove invaluable to practitioners, researchers, and students alike.

Book Re Evaluating Education in Japan and Korea

Download or read book Re Evaluating Education in Japan and Korea written by Hyunjoon Park and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International comparisons of student achievement in mathematics, science, and reading have consistently shown that Japanese and Korean students outperform their peers in other parts of world. Understandably, this has attracted many policymakers and researchers seeking to emulate this success, but it has also attracted strong criticism and a range of misconceptions of the Japanese and Korean education system. Directly challenging these misconceptions, which are prevalent in both academic and public discourses, this book seeks to provide a more nuanced view of the Japanese and Korean education systems. This includes the idea that the highly standardized means of education makes outstanding students mediocre; that the emphasis on memorization leads to a lack of creativity and independent thinking; that students’ successes are a result of private supplementary education; and that the Japanese and Korean education systems are homogenous to the point of being one single system. Using empirical data Hyunjoon Park re-evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the existing education systems in Japan and Korea and reveals whether the issues detailed above are real or unfounded and misinformed. Offering a balanced view of the evolving and complex nature of academic achievement among Japanese and Korean students, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Asian, international and comparative education, as well as those interested in Asian society more broadly.
