Download or read book ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on Abortion written by Caryn D. Riswold and published by Augsburg Fortress. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riswold calls us to think together about the ELCA's 1991 social statement on abortion. Our social, political, and legal context has changed drastically since this statement was written, but one thing remains the same: we as Lutherans are called to compassionate community. What does this mean for us today? Riswold invites readers into thoughtful conversation in an engaging and accessible volume that will help individuals, faith communities, and classrooms engage the complex issues surrounding abortion in the United States. ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on Abortion draws on theology, biblical foundations, and Lutheran ethical witness to develop a nuanced and thought-provoking analysis of the roots, reach, and contemporary context of Lutheran social teaching on abortion. Placing readers in the shoes of others who might engage this statement, Riswold asks us to consider abortion, in all its complexity, through the lens of neighbor-love. Suitable for both personal and community use, this volume includes discussion questions and a curated list of resources for additional reading.

Book ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on The Church in Society

Download or read book ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on The Church in Society written by James M. Childs Jr. and published by Augsburg Fortress. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned ELCA ethicist James Childs contextualizes the origins of this foundational social statement and helps contemporary Lutherans think creatively about how we all are called to be the church, in and for the world around us. Grounded in scripture and Lutheran theology, Childs explores the history of Lutheran public witness in the United States and then deftly connects it with our present. Lutherans are called to seek justice for people living in poverty, for creation, and as peacemakers. What does this look like in practice? How do we engage in the dialogue that is love seeking justice? Who is doing this work? How might we be called, as individuals and institutions, to speak powerfully the truth of Christ for others? Where might the Holy Spirit be leading this this church - and its members - to grow? With thoughtful discussions at the end of each chapter and a list of suggestions for further reading, ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on The Church in Society is an accessible resource for engaging congregations, study groups, and classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should feminists care about Christianity? Why should Christians care about feminism? In Feminism and Christianity Riswold presents a collection of concise answers to basic questions like these in order to generate discussion about how the two can challenge each other and can even work together in the twenty-first century. Situated firmly in the third wave of feminist activism and scholarship as well as in contemporary Christian theology, Riswold addresses issues such as race, class, gender, and sexuality with an affirmation of tradition alongside a push for change. This book is an opportunity for Christians to gain a fuller understanding of feminism, moving beyond stereotypes and assumptions and into history and contemporary society. Simultaneously this book is an opportunity for feminists to understand the ongoing relevance of a religion whose social power and core commitments can contribute to a vision of a just human community.

Book Pub Theology

Download or read book Pub Theology written by Bryan Berghoef and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From London to New York to Ann Arbor, people are gathering in pubs and bars to communicate, connect, and learn from one another over the topic of religion, of all things. In Pub Theology, pastor, writer, and pub theologian Bryan Berghoef draws from his own experience in one such setting in northern Michigan. Berghoef contends that for too long the church has insisted on setting the terms for how one can find and encounter God. Yet what if God is to be found in places we haven't been looking at all: in a coworker who doesn't believe in God, in a Buddhist neighbor, in a friend who prefers a yoga studio to a sanctuary? This book will move readers to shift toward a more chastened, humble, and inviting faith. A faith that seeks not to teach, but to learn; not to speak, but to listen. A faith that will have a seat at the table in the important religious conversations our world is having. Real-life stories gleaned from conversations and encounters during pub theology gatherings, combined with the author's own experience in grappling with these issues, make for an intriguing and enlightening read. So what are you waiting for? Pull up a chair and join the conversation!

Book Islam and the Trajectory of Globalization

Download or read book Islam and the Trajectory of Globalization written by Louay M. Safi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the growing tension between social movements that embrace egalitarian and inclusivist views of national and global politics, most notably classical liberalism, and those that advance social hierarchy and national exclusivism, such as neoliberalism, neoconservatism, and national populism. In exploring issues relating to tensions and conflicts around globalization, the book identifies historical patterns of convergence and divergence rooted in the monotheistic traditions, beginning with the ancient Israelites that dominated the Near East during the Axial age, through Islamic civilization, and finally by considering the idealism-realism tensions in modern times. One thing remained constant throughout the various historical stages that preceded our current moment of global convergence: a recurring tension between transcendental idealism and various forms of realism. Transcendental idealism, which prioritize egalitarian and universal values, pushed periodically against the forces of realism that privilege established law and power structure. Equipped with the idealism-realism framework, the book examines the consequences of European realism that justified the imperialistic venture into Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America in the name of liberation and liberalization. The ill-conceived strategy has, ironically, engendered the very dysfunctional societies that produce the waves of immigrants in constant motion from the South to the North, simultaneously as it fostered the social hierarchy that transfer external tensions into identity politics within the countries of the North. The book focuses particularly on the role played historically by Islamic rationalism in translating the monotheistic egalitarian outlook into the institutions of religious pluralism, legislative and legal autonomy, and scientific enterprise at the foundation of modern society. It concludes by shedding light on the significance of the Muslim presence in Western cultures as humanity draws slowly but consistently towards what we may come to recognize as the Global Age. Book Religious Indifference

Download or read book Religious Indifference written by Johannes Quack and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a conceptually and empirically rich introduction to religious indifference on the basis of original anthropological, historical and sociological research. Religious indifference is a central category for understanding contemporary societies, and a controversial one. For some scholars, a growing religious indifference indicates a dramatic decline in religiosity and epitomizes the endpoint of secularization processes. Others view it as an indicator of moral apathy and philosophical nihilism, whilst yet others see it as paving the way for new forms of political tolerance and solidarity. This volume describes and analyses the symbolic power of religious indifference and the conceptual contestations surrounding it. Detailed case studies cover anthropological and qualitative data from the UK, Germany, Estonia, the USA, Canada, and India analyse large quantitative data sets, and provide philosophical-literary inquiries into the phenomenon. They highlight how, for different actors and agendas, religious indifference can constitute an objective or a challenge. Pursuing a relational approach to non-religion, the book conceptualizes religious indifference in its interrelatedness with religion as well as more avowed forms of non-religion.
