Book Reef and Shore Fishes of the South Pacific

Download or read book Reef and Shore Fishes of the South Pacific written by John E. Randall and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Pacific has long been in need of a comprehensive guide to reef and shore fishes. This volume covers the inshore fish fauna of New Caledonia, the Loyalty Islands, the southern Gilbert Islands (Kiribati), Tuvalu, Fiji, the Wallis Islands, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, the Tokelau Islands, the Phoenix Islands, the Cook Islands, the Austral Islands, Rapa, the Society Islands, the Tuamoto Archipelago, the Marquesas Islands, and the Pitcairn Islands. It contains accounts of nearly 1,500 species of fishes, illustrated with more than 2,000 color photographs, taken mostly underwater. (A few drab species are illustrated by only black and white photographs or drawings.) Species accounts are headed by the English common name, the scientific name, the author or authors who described the fish, and the date of the description. This is followed by a concise list of the characteristics needed to identify the species, the total length it attains, its distribution, habitat, and in summary form what may be known of its biology. More than 600 references are given for those seeking more information on individual species. The introduction contains a two-page color spread of the main external features of fishes. An extensive glossary of scientific terms precedes the index.

Book A Field Guide to Tropical Reef Fishes of the Indo Pacific

Download or read book A Field Guide to Tropical Reef Fishes of the Indo Pacific written by Gerald R. Allen and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in the US, this is the revised and expanded fifth edition of a book that has been the standard reference work for divers, anglers and scientists for over 30 years. The new edition covers 1,670 fish species found in the seas of tropical Southeast Asia, the Southern Pacific islands and Australia--including the Great Barrier Reef, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. A must-have reference for divers, marine biologists, ecologists, commercial fisheries and sports anglers, this book includes a comprehensive identification guide to the families of reef fishes, with a definitive index. An informative and detailed Introduction includes area coverage; faunal composition; biology, behavior and ecology of reef fishes; classification of fishes, and much more. Originally published as Marine Fishes of South-East Asia, this edition contains numerous revisions in nomenclature affecting both the scientific Latin names and common names of the region's fishes. In all cases these have been made to reflect the current universally-accepted terminology. The common names in this book are the result of a recent initiative undertaken by the Australian Government and Seafood Services Australia. Each species is depicted in detailed, full-color illustrations by noted marine artists Roger Swainston and Jill Ruse, including over 35 new species. In many cases, the illustrations show both male and female examples. With more than 2,000 illustrations and 29 color photographs, this definitive field guide will continue to be an invaluable resource for professionals and hobbyists alike.

Forty-eight samples from fishes reported to be poisonous were collected for study. Dried leaves and bark of the plant, Messerschmidia argentea Linne, reported to have the property of counteracting fish poins, were tested.

Book Shore Fishes of Easter Island

Download or read book Shore Fishes of Easter Island written by John E. Randall and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easter Island (Rapanui) is the most remote inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean and the easternmost in Oceania. Much has been written on the origin of its first inhabitants and the enormous stone statues they carved and erected, but little exists on the island’s biota. Knowing that very few species of fishes had been reported for Easter Island, John Randall went there in 1969, with the support of the National Geographic Society, to study the fish fauna. He was joined during revisits in 1988 and 1989 by the island’s medical doctor, Alfredo Cea. They published the Rapanui names of fishes in 1984. The total number of Easter Island shore fishes to a depth of 200 meters is only 139 species. However, an astounding 21.7 percent are known only from the island, second only to the Hawaiian Islands in the percentage of endemic fishes. Forty-four new species of fishes have been described, of which 25 are in scientific papers by Randall or by Randall and coauthors. Shore Fishes of Easter Island puts all of these fishes in one beautifully illustrated book with introductory chapters (Historical Review, Zoogeography, Marine Conservation, Materials and Methods).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fishes of Samoa: Description of the Species Found in the Archipelago, With a Provisional Check-List of the Fishes of Oceania The islands of Samoa, known also as the Navigator Islands, or Schiffer Insel, lie in the South Pacific Ocean in latitude 14° south and longitude 17 2° west. They are volcanic in character, each of the larger ones rising in a high ridge, with extinct craters, now very heavily wooded. The almost constant rains tend to make these forests very dense, feeding swift, clear streams, which carry a large volume of water considering-the slight length of their courses. Each island is surrounded by a broad coral reef, the outer parts bare at low tide, with a narrow, shallow channel between the inner part and the shore. This reef is interrupted in certain regions, known as the iron - bound coast, where the lava rocks cease abruptly beside deep water. It is also interrupted at the mouths of certain streams, which by their fresh waters kill the coral and make a channel through the reef.
