Book Alternatives to Animals in the Development and Control of Biological Products for Human and Veterinary Use

Download or read book Alternatives to Animals in the Development and Control of Biological Products for Human and Veterinary Use written by Fred Brown and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 1999 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the use of alternative in vitro reduction and refinement methods in the development and control of biological products has increased considerably in the last few years. The issues raised are of concern to the scientific community as well as to manufacturers, regulatory authorities and those involved in animal ethics and welfare. A large number of physicochemical, immunochemical, biochemical and cell biological methods have been proposed for the replacement, reduction and refining of animal tests in the development and control of human and veterinary vaccines and other biological products. However, the implementation, validation and ultimate regulatory acceptance of these procedures are still at a very early stage. This volume contains the proceedings of a meeting, which brought together research scientists, manufacturers and regulators with the aim of promoting an exchange of scientific knowledge and increasing awareness of the importance of validation studies.

Book Replacement Reduction and Refinement of Animal Experiments in the Development and Control of Biological Products

Download or read book Replacement Reduction and Refinement of Animal Experiments in the Development and Control of Biological Products written by Fred Brown and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 1996 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, animal experimentation has played an important part in the development and quality control of immunobiological products. These days, however, concern about animal welfare is growing and, consequently, increasing emphasis is placed on the use of in vitro methods. This book reports the proceedings of a symposium held at the Paul Ehrlich Institute in Langen, Germany, in November 1994, at which the application of the three Rs principle - replacement, reduction and refinement of the use of animal experiments - was evaluated and recommendations were given. A review of the history of animal experimentation is followed by reports of various international organizations (including the European Pharmacopoeia and the World Health Organization) about their activities with respect to upholding the three Rs principle. It is shown that significant progress has been made in the last few years in the fields of pyrogen testing, hormones, blood products and vaccines. Several new in vitro methods for potency, efficacy and safety testing of vaccines are presented and discussed. General problems such as harmonization, statistics and validation, serological methods and cell cultures are also addressed. Demonstrating that sound science and animal welfare are not irreconcilable, this volume is a valuable resource for all those concerned with the development and manufacture of biological products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vaccinology, the concept of a science ranging from the study of immunology to the development and distribution of vaccines, was a word invented by Jonas Salk. This book covers the history of the methodological progress in vaccine development and to the social and ethical issues raised by vaccination. Chapters include "Jenner and the Vaccination against Smallpox," "Viral Vaccines," and "Ethical and Social Aspects of vaccines." Contributing authors include pioneers in the field, such as Samuel L. Katz and Hilary Koprowski. This history of vaccines is relatively short and many of its protagonists are still alive. This book was written by some of the chief actors in the drama whose subject matter is the conquest of epidemic disease.

Book Bridging constructions

Download or read book Bridging constructions written by Valérie Guérin and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many descriptive grammars report the use of a linguistic pattern at the interface between discourse and syntax which is known generally as tail-head linkage. This volume takes an unprecedented look at this type of linkage across languages and shows that there exist three distinct variants, all subsumed under the hypernym bridging constructions. The chapters highlight the defining features of these constructions in the grammar and their functional properties in discourse. The volume reveals that: Bridging constructions consist of two clauses: a reference clause and a bridging clause. Across languages, bridging clauses can be subordinated clauses, reduced main clauses, or main clauses with continuation prosody.Bridging constructions have three variants: recapitulative linkage, summary linkage and mixed linkage. They differ in the formal makeup of the bridging clause. In discourse, the functions that bridging constructions fulfil depend on the text genres in which they appear and their position in the text.If a language uses more than one type of bridging construction, then each type has a distinct discourse function.Bridging constructions can be optional and purely stylistic or mandatory and serve a grammatical purpose.Although the difference between bridging constructions and clause repetition can be subtle, they maintain their own distinctive characteristics.

Download or read book AIDS Testing written by Gerald Schochetman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the two years since the publication of the first edition of this book, the global spread of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has continued. HIV was estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1993 to have at least 13 million individuals worldwide, with 1 million infected infected in the United States. HIV/AIDS in the United States has become the leading cause of death among men 25 to 44 years of age and the fifth leading cause of death among women of the same age group. Prevention of HIV infection remains a global challenge. Testing for HIV is the cornerstone for surveillance and prevention programs and for the provision of appropriate medical care for those who are infected. Such testing is equally essential to the search for effective antivirus drugs and vaccines. This second edition of AIDS Testing incorporates the most current thinking on test methodology and interpretation, some of which has changed considerably over the past two years. This edition also has been expanded to include a section consisting of six chapters on test applica tions and a section consisting of four chapters on management issues. This edition, like the first, describes in clear terms all the complex ele ments of testing, including applications, scientific principles, quality assurance, safety, and medical, ethical, and legal considerations.
