Book Reducing Work Zone Crashes by Using Vehicle s Warning Flashers as a Warning Sign

Download or read book Reducing Work Zone Crashes by Using Vehicle s Warning Flashers as a Warning Sign written by Yong Bai and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural two-lane highways constitute a large percentage of the highway system in Kansas. Preserving, expending, and enhancing these highways require the set-up of a large number of one-lane, two-way work zones where traffic safety has been a severe concern. Aimed at reducing the work zone crashes attributable to inattentive driving, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) initiated a research project to evaluate the effectiveness of a traffic warning sign that is assembled by using the emergency warning flashers of the vehicles in one-lane, two-way work zones. This warning sign was named as the Emergency Flasher Traffic Control Device (EFTCD). It works in the following fashion. When a vehicle entering a one-lane, two-way work zone where stopping is required for waiting to pass the work zone, the driver is required to turn on its emergency warning flashers to warn the following vehicles of the work zone stopping condition. The EFTCD is flexible and cost-effective and may particularly benefit those work zones that are frequently moved due to the construction progress. To accurately evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed EFTCD, researchers conducted experiments in three one-lane, two-way work zones in Kansas including two with a 55-mph speed limit and one with a 65-mph speed limit. During experimental period, researchers collected vehicle speed data with and without the EFTCD and surveyed drivers for their interpretation of this warning sign and recommendation on its potential implementation. Analyses results showed that the EFTCD effectively reduced the mean speeds in work zones as well as the proportions of notably high speeds. In addition, survey results indicated that the EFTCD successfully captured the attention of most drivers when they approached the work zones. A majority of drivers recommended the implementation of this warning sign in the work zones. Therefore, researchers concluded that the EFTCD was effective in one-lane, two-way work zones. Recommendations on future research were also presented based on the results of this study. The outcomes of this research project benefit not only Kansas, but also other States where rural two-lane highways constitute a high percentage of their highway systems.

Book Speed Variation and Safety in Work Zones

Download or read book Speed Variation and Safety in Work Zones written by John Anthony Gambatese and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to lower speeds, the difference between vehicle speed and the average speed on the roadway has been identified as a factor in roadway crashes. For work zones, the potential for such speed variation from the average speed is magnified. The safety associated with speed variation in work zones affects both motorists driving through the work zone and the workers in the work zone. The overall goal of this research is to develop additional knowledge and practices that can be used to improve driver and worker safety in work zones and, as a result, mobility through work zones. The research focuses on high-speed roadways (e.g., highways and freeways) and typical mobile construction and maintenance operations that occur on such roadways (e.g., paving and re-striping). The research presented in this report involved a review of the archival literature germane to the topic of speed variation (with and without a work zone), the analysis results of speed variation and crash occurrence, and the impacts of selected traffic control interventions on speed variation in work zones in Oregon. The PCMS unit showing alternating messages "MAINTAIN CONSTANT SPEED" and "THRU WORK ZONE" in two phases and placed at the advance warning area was found to effectively reduce speed variation in the work zone. Based on the findings, the researchers recommend use of PCMS units that display custom messages to maintain constant speed for work zone operations on high-speed roadways.

Book Best Practices for Maximizing Driver Attention to Work Zone Warning Signs

Download or read book Best Practices for Maximizing Driver Attention to Work Zone Warning Signs written by Satish Ukkusuri and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies have shown that rear-end crashes in the advance warning area for a work zone are the most common type of work zone crashes. Driver inattention (or distraction) is reported as the most common issue and a major contributing factor to those types of crashes. As such, there is a need to identify the technologies that are successful in alerting drivers when approaching work zones.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Roadside Design Guide presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units-metric and U.S. Customary. This book is a guide. It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy. It is intended to use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. Although much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, several recommendations are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. However, it is important that significant deviations from the guide be based on operational experience and objective analysis. The 2011 edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide has been updated to include hardware that has met the evaluation criteria contained in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features and begins to detail the most current evaluation criteria contained under the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, 2009 (MASH). For the most part, roadside hardware tested and accepted under older guidelines that are no longer applicable has not been excluded in this edition." -- AASHTO website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes and evaluates the important findings from the literature review of the studies on work zone speed control techniques. The following treatments are included in this report: 1) flagging, 2) lane width reduction, 3) law enforcement, 4) changeable message signs (CMS), 5) rumble strips, and 6) flashing beacons. The effects of the speed control treatments on speed and traffic flow are evaluated based on: A) experiences with treatment, B) effects of treatment on speed, C) effectiveness of treatment, and D) comments about treatment. A brief description of the conditions under which the treatments were applied is provided, and the speed reduction effects of each technique are discussed. A reference matrix was prepared to identify publications related to each type of speed reduction treatment used in work zones.

Book Evaluation of Steady burn Warning Lights on Channelizing Drums in Work Zones

Download or read book Evaluation of Steady burn Warning Lights on Channelizing Drums in Work Zones written by Tapan K. Datta and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the results of a study to evaluate the safety and mobility impacts associated with the elimination of steady burn warning lights on drums in construction work zones. National crash data are compared among states with different policies regarding the use of steady burn warning lights and an in-depth investigation of Michigan work zone crashes is also conducted. The results of the crash data investigation are supplemented by a series of field studies that examine driver behavior in work zones, both with and without steady burn warning lights. Additional field studies are conducted to assess the luminance characteristics of drums with and without lights, as well as the condition of drums in each type of work zone. The luminance studies are supplemented by additional studies that are conducted in a controlled environment.
