Participants were randomly assigned to either an HIV/AIDS safer sex class or a health promotion class. No significant differences in self-efficacy were found between the two groups. However, female participants were found to have higher self-efficacy than male participants. Reported sexual activity was low for this population, so no significant findings were discovered between self-efficacy and condom use.

Book excerpt: Among those that face the greatest risk for contracting Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are black adolescents between the ages of 13 and 24. Nearly one-third of new infections occur among this demographic. Among all youth, black men have higher rates of contracting HIV in comparison to any other race/ethnicity. This study focuses on the roles of the family, primarily parental communication and relationship factors, and school, primarily peers, and teachers, and how they are associated with sexual health behaviors (condom use, HIV testing, etc.); their impact, in short, on shaping health behaviors. This dissertation study examines the following questions among Black adolescent males: (1) Are there mediational relationships between parent support, self-efficacy beliefs about sex, sense of belonging at school, parent relationships, parent attitudes about sex, peer knowledge, racial discrimination, and HIV sexual risk behaviors? (2) Are self-efficacy, sense of belonging, parent support, parent attitudes towards sex, parental relationships, and peer knowledge predictive of HIV testing (ages 14-26)? Using longitudinal data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). Add Health is designed to explore health and social context from adolescence to adulthood (Carolina Population Center). Includes a nationally representative sample of U.S. adolescents from grades 7 through 12, over four waves (1994-95, 1996, 2001-02, 2008 ) and collects data on respondents' social environment, family environment, behaviors and choices, physical health, education, goals and achievements. The main analytic strategy to addressing research question was a multinomial analysis and a structural equation model. The results indicated that parent support positively predicted HIV testing among Black males at waves 1 and 3. Results also indicated that parent attitudes was negatively associated with males being tested at both waves 1 and 3. These results our important because the eco-developmental theory suggests that microsystems are the most influential with respect to adolescent HIV/Sexually transmitted disease risk behaviors now extending to HIV testing.

The African-American rate of HIV/AIDS infection is six times higher than that for Caucasians (CDC, 2006). Not only has an HIV/AIDS impacted African American adult, but African-American youth are also disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS (CDC, HIV/AIDS among Youth: Fact Sheet, 2006). Compared to other youth, new infection rates for African American adolescent HIV incidence have remained steady; not resulting in a decrease despite over twenty years of prevention education and intervention. As the HIV/AIDS pandemic continues to devastate the African American community increases in sustainable community prevention interventions that address racial, cultural, age, and gender specific differences are sorely needed. This research study of the Risk Reduction Project examined the role that single parenting plays on the HIV/AIDS sexual behaviors of African American youth residing in a Midwest community. Overall, the results from this study indicate that the theory of reasoned action was effective in predicting sexual behavior, however, gender differences existed. Despite reporting greater levels of sexual activity and condom use, male participant sexual intentions and behaviors were found to be more positively impacted by parent subjective norms than female participants. Female sexual intentions, on the other hand, were negatively impacted by parent subjective norms. For participants residing in single mother households, males were found to be significantly impacted by mother referent subjective norm while females were negatively impacted.

It provides an intellectual context for empirically-based and theory-supported interventions geared toward this population. African American women are disproportionately burdened by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Statistics show that African American women account for 64% of all HIV/AIDS cases reported in 2005 compared to White women at 19% and Hispanic women at 15% (CDC, 2005). Typically, the majority of HIV/AIDS research focuses on prevention for lowincome, substance abusing minority women, adolescents, and men who have sex with men (MSM), while young Black college women are ignored as a risk group. Though this group does not have some of the common risk factors commonly associated with HIV such as poverty, injection drug use, or low levels of education, they still engage in behaviors that place them at risk for contracting HIV. This study consisted of convenience sample of 189 young Black women from Clark Atlanta University between the ages of 18 and 24. Participants were recruited through various campus student organizations. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to test each research hypothesis. Results indicated that type(s) of sexual relationship was the strongest predictor of condom use among young Black college women and accounted for 2.5% of the variance in their condom use. HIV/AIDS knowledge, condom use self-efficacy, substance use nor HIV/AIDS perceived risk predicted this sample's condom use.

Book excerpt: Young urban African American women are at disproportionately high risk for HIV/STIs and current interventions focusing on individual factors (e.g., condom use self-efficacy) have not been sufficient to address this risk. Recent research suggests that an ecological approach that takes into account broader social and relationship factors may be more effective in meeting the needs of this population. The present study examined several relationship-level factors, including relationship power, avoidance motives for sex, and relationship commitment, and their potential interaction with the individual-level factor of condom use self-efficacy in predicting sexual risk-taking behaviors in a community sample of African American women aged 18-25 (N =132). The current study additionally considered the role of young women's ambivalence around condom use, through descriptive analyses. Out of the three relationship variables, only relationship power was found to interact with condom use self-efficacy to predict sexual risk. In addition, although not specifically hypothesized, relationship commitment predicted condom use over and above the variance accounted for by condom use self-efficacy, suggesting that relationship commitment may be particularly important in determining condom use for this population. Further, participants expressed ambivalence about condom use during their last protected and unprotected sexual encounters, suggesting that women do not always want to use condoms. Discussion of the results highlights the importance of considering relationship factors and ambivalence toward condom use in sexual risk-taking among young urban African American women. Limitations and implications for prevention programming are considered.

Book excerpt: While every sexually active teenager is at risk for contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), some have been found to be at higher risk because of behavioral, socioeconomic, or environmental factors. These youth include: runaway and homeless youth, detained or incarcerated teens, alcohol- and other drug-using youth and their sexual partners, out-of-school youth, adolescents in rural communities, gay youth, immigrant youth, survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and African-American and Hispanic youth. A analysis of successful prevention programs yielded 11 program components that should be part of effective HIV/AIDS programs. The two most widely applicable are intensive, individualized attention and community-wide, multi-agency approaches; others include early identification and intervention, social skills training, and parental involvement. Six major considerations for prevention programs are: (1) no single program component can alter the outcomes for all children at risk; (2) high-risk behaviors are interrelated and prevention programs should have holistic goals; (3) a package of services is required within each community; (4) interventions should be aimed at changing institutions; (5) early intervention is crucial; and (6) one-shot programs have no effect. Three model HIV/AIDS prevention programs for high risk young people are highlighted and six policy recommendations for establishing effective programs are offered. (Contains 36 references.) (ND)

Book excerpt: African American (AA) adolescents are currently at disproportionate risk for HIV infection, with AA youth ages 13 through 19 accounting for 56% of all new HIV cases, a rate of infection 8 times that of Caucasian youth. Prevention researchers have targeted this population with a sense of urgency, resulting in numerous studies that have investigated predictors of sexual risk behaviors among AA youth. The results of these studies have yielded findings in a number of domains including environmental, individual, and interpersonal factors. However, reported findings are often inconsistent and synthesis of findings in this area is lagging. The present study synthesized data from 79 studies examining 11 domains of variables in association with 3 outcome variables: Unprotected Sex, Condom Use, and Multiple Sex partners. Intentions and partner variables were most predictive of sexual risk behaviors in this population. Further research is needed to investigate the role of partner-related influences in predicting sexual risk behaviors.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationships between HIV/AIDS knowledge, perceived risk and stigmatization, self-efficacy for using condoms, religiosity, and frequency of condom use in a sample of 154 African American college women. Four research questions were proposed: Do participants who engage in greater stigmatizing of PLWHA (people living with HIV/AIDS) participate in less condom usage; is greater HIV/AIDS knowledge positively related to frequency of condom use; does condom self-efficacy act as a mediator between stigmatizing of PLWHA and frequency of condom use; and, does perceived risk for HIV/AIDS act as a mediator between HIV/AIDS knowledge and frequency of condom use. The results showed that none of the three stigma dimensions reported significant correlations with frequency of condom use. Overall, no significant correlations were found between frequency of condom use and any of the other variables (i.e., HIV/AIDS knowledge, and perceived risk), except for condom self-efficacy.
