Book Reducing Space Mission Cost

Download or read book Reducing Space Mission Cost written by James R. Wertz and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-07-31 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing Space Mission Cost is the first complete treatment of the technology, process, and problems in the most critical areas of modern spaceflight. The demand to reduce cost is unrelenting. This pioneering book addresses all aspects of this problem, including: Technology and processes for reducing cost Cost reduction in mission engineering, spacecraft design, manufacture, launch, and operations Implementation methods and problems The price of reducing cost 10 detailed case studies of what works in practice in: Science missions Interplanetary probes Communications spacecraft Test and Applications missions Beginning on the inside front cover, this book provides real cost data on a variety of missions, systems, and subsystems. According to the authors: `Reducing mission cost is hard enough if you know what the real costs are, and virtually impossible if you don't.' This book challenges traditional methods, yet recognizes that all space programs are run to minimize cost within the rules under which they are built and flown. It provides practical recipes for reducing cost in both new and ongoing missions and discusses what works, what government can do to help, and what methods intended to reduce cost may be counterproductive and unintentionally increase cost. As shown on the inside rear cover, the case studies described in the book have reduced total mission cost by 80% to more than 90% with respect to projections by traditional cost methods. This book is a follow-on to the now standard text and reference, Space Mission Analysis and Design, also edited by Drs. Wertz and Larson. It is required reading for professionals, students, and managers in astronautics or space sciences and managers or scientists involved in space experiments. This book shows that reducing space mission cost, without reducing reliability, is as possible as it is important for the future of space exploration.

Book Controlling Cost Growth of NASA Earth and Space Science Missions

Download or read book Controlling Cost Growth of NASA Earth and Space Science Missions written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cost and schedule growth is a problem experienced by many types of projects in many fields of endeavor. Based on prior studies of cost growth in NASA and Department of Defense projects, this book identifies specific causes of cost growth associated with NASA Earth and space science missions and provides guidance on how NASA can overcome these specific problems. The recommendations in this book focus on changes in NASA policies that would directly reduce or eliminate the cost growth of Earth and space science missions. Large cost growth is a concern for Earth and space science missions, and it can be a concern for other missions as well. If the cost growth is large enough, it can create liquidity problems for NASA's Science Mission Directorate that in turn cause cost profile changes and development delays that amplify the overall cost growth for other concurrent and/or pending missions. Addressing cost growth through the allocation of artificially high reserves is an inefficient use of resources because it unnecessarily diminishes the portfolio of planned flights. The most efficient use of resources is to establish realistic budgets and reserves and effective management processes that maximize the likelihood that mission costs will not exceed reserves. NASA is already taking action to reduce cost growth; additional steps, as recommended herein, will help improve NASA's mission planning process and achieve the goal of ensuring frequent mission opportunities for NASA Earth and space science.

Download or read book LSC CPS1 LSC CPS1 Gen use Cost Effective Space Mission Operations written by Gael Squibb and published by Learning Solutions. This book was released on 2006-06-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cost-Effective Space Mission Operations, Second Edition describes the relationship between mission operations and the other elements of the space mission as well as specific operations tasks. This book defines a process that helps the mission operations manager translate mission objectives and requirements into a viable mission operations concept. The mission operations manager must develop this operations concept early enough, during concept exploration, so that the project manager can trade the future cost of operations against current development costs. Written for professionals and students involved in systems engineering and operations in space, this book is valuable for program managers, mission operations managers, spacecraft engineers and designers, project scientists and operators. Cost-Effective Space Mission Operations includes detailed descriptions of thirteen mission operations functions, provides a process for developing a mission operations concept, and describes a model for evaluating the cost and complexity of an operations system. The book also covers how to conduct routine, launch and early-orbit, and special operations, as well as how to operate interplanetary, international, microsatellite, and crewed missions.

Book The Logic of Microspace

Download or read book The Logic of Microspace written by Rick Fleeter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing the focus of the multibillion-dollar global aerospace business toward smaller, lower-cost spacecraft is not happening solely due to technical, managerial, financial or market motivations. Rick Fleeter's second book on the small, low-cost space programmes which are the fastest-growing segment of aerospace activity, gives the reader a keen understanding of the full spectrum of factors driving this profound change. The text then goes beyond engineering technologies and management techniques to envision the tantalizing prospects microspace has in store for the industry, its present markets and those of the future.

Book Space Mission Analysis and Design

Download or read book Space Mission Analysis and Design written by Wiley J. Larson and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, appropriate as a textbook for either advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate courses, or as a reference for those already working in space technology, addresses the art and science of preliminary space mission design--beginning with a "blank sheet of paper" and creating a space mission to meet a set of broad, often poorly defined objectives. This revised and updated edition adds new sections on defining the overall mission concept, subject trades, guidance and navigation, and applying the mission analysis and design process to reduce cost and risk in later program stages. This volume also inaugurates the Space Technology Series, a cooperative activity of the US Dept. of Defense and NASA. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Implications of Ultra Low Cost Access to Space

Download or read book Implications of Ultra Low Cost Access to Space written by Todd Harrison and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the advent of the space age, a primary constraint on military, commercial, and civil space missions has been the cost of launch. Launching objects into space requires substantial investments in launch systems and infrastructure, which has restricted the market to only a handful of national governments and several large private companies. This study explores the possibility of a space industry significantly less constrained by the cost of access to space.

This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effort of compiling a collection of Best Practices for use in Space Mission Operations was initiated within a subcommittee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Space Operations and Support Technical Committee (SOSTC). The idea was to eventually post a collection of Best Practices on a website so as to make them available to the general Space Operations community. The effort of searching for available Best Practices began in the fall of 1999. As the search progressed, it became apparent that there were not many Best Practices developed that were available to the general community. Therefore, the subcommittee decided to use the SOSTC Annual Workshop on Reducing Space Mission Costs as a forum for developing Best Practices for our purpose of sharing them with a larger audience. A dedicated track at the April 2000 workshop was designed to stimulate discussions on developing such Best Practices and forming working groups made up of experienced people from various organizations to perform the development. These groups were solicited to help outside the workshop to bring this effort to fruition. Since that time, biweekly teleconferences have been held to discuss the development of the Best Practices and their posting.Galal, Ken and Hogan, Roger P.
