Book Reducing Health Risks in Fire Stations Through Design Integration

Download or read book Reducing Health Risks in Fire Stations Through Design Integration written by Connor Hall and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Incorporating evidence from case studies and professionals, this paper demonstrates how effectively designed fire stations benefit firefighters' mental and physical health. It argues for implementing necessary spaces and incorporating positive design techniques into every fire station in the United States. Spatial design examples are included to further understand how the aforementioned spatial design and techniques can adequately be implemented in an actual fire station." --page 6.

Book Designing Fire Stations for the Health Wellness of Firefighters Their Communities

Download or read book Designing Fire Stations for the Health Wellness of Firefighters Their Communities written by Katie Jo McCall and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire departments are making procedural and cultural changes due to the results of research regarding the health effects of carcinogens and firefighters' behavioral health but, where is the change in fire station design? Too many stations fail to control the spread of contaminants, disregard the overall wellbeing of buildging occupants, and lack sufficient space for firefighter personnel training and the use and care of vehicles within the apparatus bay. This leads to the question: How can the design of a fire station positively impact the overall health of not only firefighters, but their communities and the environment? Research has been conducted through interviews with first responders, discussions with architects and interior designers who have fire station design experience, analysis of fire stations and other building types that focus on the occupants' health, and through secondary sources of research conducted and released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA). With a functional, yet creative, approach, focused on the overall wellbeing of the station's occupants, a new design solution is proposed. This thesis argues that we must re-imagine fire station design to enhance the overall health, wellbeing, and safety of firefighters, their communities, and the environment.

Book Enhancing Urban Safety and Security

Download or read book Enhancing Urban Safety and Security written by Un-Habitat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhancing Urban Safety and Security addresses three major threats to the safety and security of cities: crime and violence; insecurity of tenure and forced evictions; and natural and human-made disasters. It analyses worldwide trends with respect to each of these threats, paying particular attention to their underlying causes and impacts, as well as to the good policies and best practices that have been adopted at the city, national and international levels in order to address these threats. The report adopts a human security perspective, concerned with the safety and security of people rather than of states, and highlights issues that can be addressed through appropriate urban policy, planning, design and governance.

Book Integrating Mental Health and Disability Into Public Health Disaster Preparedness and Response

Download or read book Integrating Mental Health and Disability Into Public Health Disaster Preparedness and Response written by Jill Morrow-Gorton and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating Mental Health and Disability into Public Health Disaster Preparedness and Response brings together the fields of mental/behavioral health, law, human rights, and medicine as they relate to disaster planning and response for people with disabilities, mental and behavioral health conditions and chronic illness. Children and adults with disabilities, mental/behavioral health conditions and chronic illness remain more vulnerable to the negative effects of emergencies and disasters than the general population. This book addresses the effects of emotional trauma, personal growth and resilience, the impact on physical health and systems of care, and legal compliance and advocacy. Following a philosophy of whole community emergency planning, inclusive of people with disabilities, the book advocates for considering and addressing these issues together in an effort to ultimately lead to greater resilience for individuals with disabilities and the whole community. - Provides a public health framework on the phases of disasters, integrating mental health and disability into planning, responding to disasters, and recovering post disaster - Offers solutions for disability and disaster needs, as well as planning and systems for service delivery at multiple levels, including individual, local, state and federal - Provides global examples of real world tools, best practices and legal principles, allowing the reader to think about the role that disability and mental health play in disaster planning, response and recovery across the world - Reflects the best thinking about disaster planning and response and disability-related issues and demonstrates new and creative ways of bringing together these fields to strengthen communities

Book Human Needs in Constructing Fire Stations

Download or read book Human Needs in Constructing Fire Stations written by Richard C. Silvestri and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically fire stations have been designed to house apparatus equipment and persons. Human needs have been taken into consideration in the inherent design of these stations in such areas as safety features to reduce vehicle accidents. However this and other efforts did not go far enough into the human needs concerns. The fire station is used primarily as housing of personnel during long, non-productive hours. Current literature revealed that the concern for the human needs has not been nor continues to be a major one. In addition, a recent issue raised, concerns the atmospheric environment in fire stations. The solution for now is to provide expensive vehicle exhaust emission extractors.

Book Using Graywater and Stormwater to Enhance Local Water Supplies

Download or read book Using Graywater and Stormwater to Enhance Local Water Supplies written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-07-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic and episodic water shortages are becoming common in many regions of the United States, and population growth in water-scarce regions further compounds the challenges. Increasingly, alternative water sources such as graywater-untreated wastewater that does not include water from the toilet but generally includes water from bathroom sinks, showers, bathtubs, clothes washers, and laundry sinks- and stormwater-water from rainfall or snow that can be measured downstream in a pipe, culvert, or stream shortly after the precipitation event-are being viewed as resources to supplement scarce water supplies rather than as waste to be discharged as rapidly as possible. Graywater and stormwater can serve a range of non-potable uses, including irrigation, toilet flushing, washing, and cooling, although treatment may be needed. Stormwater may also be used to recharge groundwater, which may ultimately be tapped for potable use. In addition to providing additional sources of local water supply, harvesting stormwater has many potential benefits, including energy savings, pollution prevention, and reducing the impacts of urban development on urban streams. Similarly, the reuse of graywater can enhance water supply reliability and extend the capacity of existing wastewater systems in growing cities. Despite the benefits of using local alternative water sources to address water demands, many questions remain that have limited the broader application of graywater and stormwater capture and use. In particular, limited information is available on the costs, benefits, and risks of these projects, and beyond the simplest applications many state and local public health agencies have not developed regulatory frameworks for full use of these local water resources. To address these issues, Using Graywater and Stormwater to Enhance Local Water Supplies analyzes the risks, costs, and benefits on various uses of graywater and stormwater. This report examines technical, economic, regulatory, and social issues associated with graywater and stormwater capture for a range of uses, including non-potable urban uses, irrigation, and groundwater recharge. Using Graywater and Stormwater to Enhance Local Water Supplies considers the quality and suitability of water for reuse, treatment and storage technologies, and human health and environmental risks of water reuse. The findings and recommendations of this report will be valuable for water managers, citizens of states under a current drought, and local and state health and environmental agencies.
