Book Contact Problems in Elasticity

Download or read book Contact Problems in Elasticity written by N. Kikuchi and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contact of one deformable body with another lies at the heart of almost every mechanical structure. Here, in a comprehensive treatment, two of the field's leading researchers present a systematic approach to contact problems. Using variational formulations, Kikuchi and Oden derive a multitude of new results, both for classical problems and for nonlinear problems involving large deflections and buckling of thin plates with unilateral supports, dry friction with nonclassical laws, large elastic and elastoplastic deformations with frictional contact, dynamic contacts with dynamic frictional effects, and rolling contacts. This method exposes properties of solutions obscured by classical methods, and it provides a basis for the development of powerful numerical schemes. Among the novel results presented here are algorithms for contact problems with nonlinear and nonlocal friction, and very effective algorithms for solving problems involving the large elastic deformation of hyperelastic bodies with general contact conditions. Includes detailed discussion of numerical methods for nonlinear materials with unilateral contact and friction, with examples of metalforming simulations. Also presents algorithms for the finite deformation rolling contact problem, along with a discussion of numerical examples.

Book Conforming Finite Element Methods for Incompressible and Nearly Incompressible Continua

Download or read book Conforming Finite Element Methods for Incompressible and Nearly Incompressible Continua written by L. R. Scott and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest here is in finite element discretizations of problems involving an incompressibility condition. As model problems we consider the Stokes equations for the flow of a viscous, incompressible fluid and the equations of linear plane-strain elasticity for the deformation of an isotropic, nearly incompressible solid. In both cases the incompressibility condition takes the form of a divergence constraint. Although this is the most simple formulation, the proper understanding of how an approximate method satisfies the constraint represents an important step towards the understanding of more complicated situations, involving e.g. the Navier-Stokes equations or the equations of nonlinear elasticity. The finite element methods we study have the property that the approximations to the velocities, respectively to the displacements, are continuous; such methods are generally referred to as conforming.

Book Analysis of Finite Deformations of Elastic Solids by the Finite Element Method

Download or read book Analysis of Finite Deformations of Elastic Solids by the Finite Element Method written by John Tinsley Oden and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is concerned with an extension of previous finite element applications in finite elasticity. Generally, formulations of the equations governing finite deformations of incompressible elastic elements are presented. Formulations of higher order approximations and curvilinear elements are also given. Two types of incompressibility conditions are obtained: one which is applied locally, element by element, and another which is applied at each node in the connected model. Discussions of nonconservative generalized forces and consistent stresses in finitely deformed elements are considered. The incremental loading technique is applied to solve the nonlinear equations for arbitrary forms of strain energy function for isotropic methods. Several numerical examples are presented; these include finite stretching of materially nonlinear sheets, finite deformation of a circular plate, and finite plane strain of a body containing a circular hole. Book Adaptive Finite Element Methods

Download or read book Adaptive Finite Element Methods written by Wenbin Liu and published by Alpha Science International Limited. This book was released on 2012 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: "This book emphasizes the discussions of some unique issues from the adaptive finite element approximation of optimal control. The main idea used in the approximation error analysis (both a priori and a posteriori) is to first combine convex analysis and interpolation error estimations of suitable interpolators, which much depend on the structure of the control constraints, to derive the error estimates for the control via the variational inequalities in the optimality conditions, and then to apply the standard techniques to derive the error estimates for the state equations. The need, the framework and the techniques of using multi adaptive meshes in developing efficient numerical algorithms for optimal control have been emphasized throughout the book. The book starts from several typical examples of optimal control problems and then discusses existence and optimality conditions for some optimal control problems. It is believed that these discussions are especially useful for the researchers and students who first entered this area. Then the finite element approximation schemes for several typical optimal control problems are set up, their a priori and a posteriori error estimates are derived following the main idea mentioned, and their computational methods are studied."-- Publisher website, viewed 13th July, 2012.
