There is no doubt that the demand for nurses has been great during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nurses have become the heroes in the battle of the virus, and their hard work should be appreciated. Yet, burnout, stress, and depression among nurses have become the main issues during the pandemic. Some nurses leave their jobs and profession due to an excessive and stressful workload. This crisis puts a new focus on human resource management in hospital administration to retain their nurses, and also improve the quality of care. In addition to addressing the points above, the book also offers recommendations to resolve the barriers and challenges of competence-based human resource management by emphasizing the partnership between nursing and human recourses to influence nurse practice and human resource policy positively. Yupin Aungsuroch, Ph.D., RN, is an associate professor and Director of the Ph.D. program at Faculty of Nursing Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. She was a former Dean at the same faculty. Her areas of expertise are related to leadership and management, nursing system, nursing workforce, and the positive practice environment. Joko Gunawan, Ph.D., RN, is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Nursing, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. His areas of expertise are nursing administration and informatics. Mary L. Fisher, Ph.D., RN, is a Professor Emeritus, Indiana University School of Nursing, USA, and a Clinical Professor at the College of Nursing, University of Florida, USA. Her areas of expertise are evidence-based practice, nursing administration, high performance work system, strategic human resource management, professional development, organizational change, teacher education, and educational assessment.

At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.
