Book excerpt: Red sky at dawn, sailors take warn… Miss Tessa George is the epitome of a failed debutant. At twenty six, and as the oldest of her three sisters, she’s on the shelf and officially off the market. When everything about her is wrong, the only right thing to do is exactly what is demanded. Move to a remote island with her newly wedded sister and live out her life as a companion. Tessa left the only life she knew, but what she found on the ocean was more than she could ever dream. Captain Cristian is a bastard, in no uncertain terms. Raised in a convent, he escaped as a boy entering a life of perpetual poverty and crime. That is until Marco de Alejandro took him under his wing, raising him to be a skilled captain and take over Marco’s thriving merchant fleet. But Marco wasn’t always a wealthy merchant and Cristian didn’t earn his reputation as a fierce captain for hauling silk and tea across the oceans. Red sky at night, sailors delight… On an island as mysterious as Star Frost, nothing is as it seems. Tessa’s life as a companion has turned into unfettered freedom to explore who she is and the adventures Star Frost has to offer. Cristian offers to help her, as a friend, but friends don’t kiss…or keep secrets. As they surrender to the desire between them, Cristian tries to keep his distance to protect her from his dark past, but unlike treasure, some enemies won’t stay buried forever…

Book excerpt: The Arctic convoys that sailed through the cold malevolent waters of the Barents Sea ran the gauntlet of German air and sea attacks as they struggled to transport vital supplies to Britain s Russian allies. Convoy JW51B sailed in December 1942 with a small close escort of five destroyers, plus a reserve of two light cruisers, which shadowed the main convoy at a distance of seventy miles. The convoy was attacked on 31 December by a powerful German force that included the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper, the pocket battleship Lutzow and six destroyers. The ensuing engagement proved the worth of the British destroyers and the bravery of the men who sailed in them.It was a naval engagement that had far-reaching consequences and resulted in many capital ships of the Kriegsmarine being decommissioned for the rest of World War II.A gripping tale of the war at sea under the direst of conditions."

Book excerpt: The explosive and bloody true history of Texas Rangers Company F, made up of hard men who risked their lives to bring justice to a lawless frontier. Between 1886 and 1888, Sergeant James Brooks, of Texas Ranger Company F, was engaged in three fatal gunfights, endured disfiguring bullet wounds, engaged in countless manhunts, was convicted of second-degree murder, and rattled Washington, D.C. with a request for a pardon from the US president. His story anchors the tale of Joe Pappalardo's Red Sky Morning, an epic saga of lawmen and criminals set in Texas during the waning years of the “Old West.” Alongside Brooks were the Rangers of Company F, who ranged from a pious teetotaler to a cowboy fleeing retribution for killing a man. They were all led by Captain William Scott, who cut his teeth as a freelance undercover informant but was facing the end of his Ranger career. Company F hunted criminals across Texas and beyond, killing them as needed, and were confident they could bring anyone to “Ranger justice.” But Brooks’ men met their match in the Conner family, East Texas master hunters and jailbreakers who were wanted for their part in a bloody family feud. The full story of Company F’s showdown with the Conner family is finally being told, with long-dead voices heard for the first time. This truly hidden history paints the grim picture of neighbors and relatives becoming snitches and bounty hunters, and a company of Texas Rangers who waded into the conflict only to find themselves in over their heads – and in the fight of their lives.

Book Mindfulness and Reverence

Download or read book Mindfulness and Reverence written by Rudolf Steiner and published by Rudolf Steiner Press. This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary interest in the meditative schooling of mindfulness is usually associated with Eastern traditions. Rudolf Steiner spoke of the same phenomenon, although he used the terms 'attentiveness' and 'dedication' – or, combining these two, 'pure perception'. This way of mindfulness and reverence is not in conflict with spiritual paths founded on thinking or pure thought. However, as the texts in this anthology indicate, methods based exclusively on thinking cannot be successful if they are not supported by perception, feeling and will. In counterbalance to today's increasing intellectualization, the meditative exercises featured here connect with the perceptive activity of the human being's sensory organs. They could also be understood as exercises for developing empathy, helping to make our relationship with the world around us more conscious and intense. Rudolf Steiner's texts are sensitively edited and arranged by Andreas Neider, whose introduction and notes add further clarity to the theme.
