Book An Integrated Assessment of the Red Sea Urchin Strongylocentrotus Franciscanus Fisheries in Southern California and Washington State

Download or read book An Integrated Assessment of the Red Sea Urchin Strongylocentrotus Franciscanus Fisheries in Southern California and Washington State written by Thea Thezin Rogier and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated assessments are a tool that can help decision makers understand complex environmental problems. Climate change has the potential to impact managed resources in terms social and economic factors, as well as causing changes to biogeochemical cycles and subsequent changes to species that these cycles affect. The U.S. west coast red sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus franciscanus) fisheries stand to be affected by climate change-related stressors such as ocean acidification, rising ocean temperatures, and changes in the frequency and intensity of ENSO events. An integrated assessment of the institutional and ecological contexts of two red sea urchin fishery case studies outlines existing knowledge gaps that may impede management efforts when it comes to the sustainability and vulnerability of these marine resources under threats from climate change.

Book Survey of Red Sea Urchin Populations in Fitz Hugh Sound British Columbia 2001

Download or read book Survey of Red Sea Urchin Populations in Fitz Hugh Sound British Columbia 2001 written by M. Atkins and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of red sea urchin populations was conducted in Fitz Hugh Sound (Pacific Fisheries Management sub-areas 8-3, 8-4, and 8-16) during August, 2001. A total of 60 transects were surveyed by SCUBA divers, and 1157 red sea urchins were measured. The total mean density of red sea urchins of all sizes was 1.49/m2, and for legal-sized red sea urchins, the density was 0.72/m2.

Book Survey of Red Sea Urchin Populations Near Robson Bight British Columbia 2001

Download or read book Survey of Red Sea Urchin Populations Near Robson Bight British Columbia 2001 written by M. Atkins and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of red sea urchin populations was conducted near Robson Bight (Pacific Fisheries Management, PFM sub-areas 12-3 and 12-21) during 2001. A total of 60 transects were surveyed by SCUBA divers, and 957 red sea urchins were measured. The density of red sea urchins in PFM sub-area 12-3 and in PFM sub-area 12-21 for red sea urchins of all sizes was 0.83/m2 and 0.63/m2, respectively, and for legal-sized red sea urchins, the density was 0.69/m2 and 0.53/m2, respectively. No significant differences were observed in estimated mean density (number/m2) and biomass (g/m2) between red sea urchins found inside(12 transects) compared with outside (48 transects) previously fished commercial bed areas.

Book Survey of Red Sea Urchin Populations in Beaver Pass and Freeman Pass British Columbia 2002

Download or read book Survey of Red Sea Urchin Populations in Beaver Pass and Freeman Pass British Columbia 2002 written by M. Atkins and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of red sea urchin populations was conducted in Beaver Pass and Freeman Pass (Pacific Fisheries Management sub-area 5-10 and 5-12) during May 2002. A total of 60 transects were surveyed by SCUBA divers, and 1243 red sea urchins were measured. Estimated mean densities (number/m2) and biomass (g/m2) were compared for red sea urchins found inside (18 transects) and outside (34 transects) previously fished commercial bed areas, and in research bed areas (8 transects). Densities were also compared by depth.

Book Edible Sea Urchins Biology and Ecology

Download or read book Edible Sea Urchins Biology and Ecology written by John M. Lawrence and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-05-21 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea urchins are a major component of marine environments found throughout the world's oceans. A major model for research in developmental biology, they are also of major economic importance in many regions and interest in their management and aquaculture has increased greatly in recent years. This book provides a synthesis of biological and ecological characteristics of sea urchins that are of basic scientific interest and also essential for effective fisheries management and aquaculture. General chapters consider characteristics of sea urchins as a whole. In addition, specific chapters are devoted to the ecology of 17 species that are of major commercial interest and ecological importance. Features include: • A synthesis of what is known about the basic biological characteristics of the sea urchin, useful for the direction of future research. • Case histories of 17 species that illustrate their ecological role in a variety of environments. • With the catastrophic decline in fisheries resulting primarily from over-fishing, it is essential that the populations be managed effectively and that aquaculture be developed. This book provides knowledge of the biology and ecology of the commercially important sea urchins that will contribute to these goals. • The only book available in present literature devoted to sea urchins. With this new title experts provide a broad synthetic treatment and in depth analysis of the biology and ecology of sea urchins from around the world, designed to provide an understanding of the group and the basis for fisheries management and aquaculture.
