Book excerpt: In The Fallen Elves, book three of The Second Neoluzian War epic fantasy series, the wicked Orc dictator Arkan Spiritstrike, his wizards and military generals are on the verge of laying waste to the elven cities of Balenwood and Oakmantle after destroying the human settlements in the northern lands. This is a time of desperation for the good races because Darius has been lost to lower Neoluzia due to the Gathering of Replenishment spell cast upon him by members of the secretive wizard guild, the Veiled Institution. David Parr, a human from Earth summoned by Darius that reluctantly remains in Neoluzia to assist the Salon of Enlightenment against their Orc enemies, must find the great necromancer Termaplix if the land is to be saved. Finding Termaplix may be impossible however, for the hero from the War of Cleansing has been hidden in a secret place due to unknown circumstances one thousand years ago--a tomb long since forgotten to the current generations in the land. Perilously stifled in their shift away from the old magic and the forced elimination of history, those that Parr seeks to help against the enemy from the north must first learn to embrace the gift of magic again, an art banished in antiquity by the deception of peace and the deep wounds of the surviving populations in the first war.

And one of the kingdoms amongst those is Rajbad, ruled by Sultan Ibrahim Thodi. Before the war of Rajbad, Ibrahim writes a letter to Sultan Mohammed Tughur of Aumaria for help. To avenge her family, Princess Almas (daughter of Ibrahim) moves to Aumaria to know the reason for the letter’s negligence. In Aumaria, there are competitions for deciding the crown prince, in which Prince Miraan and Prince Kilaab end up tying for the crown. So the high priest Malekulashtar sets a new challenge for them, i.e., ending the dark empire of Jaghtalaf, which would start with getting a red konon and putting off its fire ring. Almas and Miraan’s friend-turned-foe, Mehlam, is told to accompany them. On the other hand, Someshwar – the burning man, gets a vision of the flying freezers who are in search of a blue axe as it belongs to them. They are even on the tail of a boy named Alaqmar. Leaving an unwelcoming Earth, Kickaha is trapped on the strange planet he thinks of as Lavalite World, and the only way out is a single gate, located inside Urthona’s palace. But the stronghold moves as readily as the dangerous terrain, making survival an unlikely prospect. After facing harrowing challenges and finally returning home to the World of Tiers, Kickaha is led into one last trap. He’ll have to confront the fearsome enemy who has been hunting him all along—and the fate of the pocket universes lies in the balance. Book Soviet Self Hatred

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eliot Borenstein
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2023-06-15
  • ISBN : 1501769898
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Soviet Self Hatred written by Eliot Borenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet Self-Hatred examines the imaginary Russian identities that emerged following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Eliot Borenstein shows how these identities are best understood as balanced on a simple axis between pride and shame, shifting in response to Russia's standing in the global community, its anxieties about internal dissension and foreign threats, and its stark socioeconomic inequalities. Through close readings of Russian fiction, films, jokes, songs, fan culture, and Internet memes, Borenstein identifies and analyzes four distinct types with which Russians identify or project onto others. They are the sovok (the Soviet yokel); the New Russian (the despised, ridiculous nouveau riche), the vatnik (the belligerent, jingoistic patriot), and the Orc (the ultraviolent savage derived from a deliberate misreading of Tolkien's epic). Through these contested identities, Soviet Self-Hatred shows how stories people tell about themselves can, tragically, become the stories that others are forced to live.
