Book excerpt: From June 8 through October 13, 2022, Alaska Department of Fish and Game staff operated an autonomous video counting tower (AVCT) immediately below the outlet of Red Lake within the Southern District of the Lower Cook Inlet Management Area (LCIMA). The AVCT was programmed to record high-resolution time-lapse video during daylight hours to provide information on the run-timing and magnitude of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) escapements into Red Lake. This project was a component of the Alaska Energy Authority’s preliminary assessment of fishery resources in the Martin River drainage, which is under consideration for future hydroelectric power development. Sockeye salmon (O. nerka), coho salmon (O. kisutch), pink salmon (O. gorbuscha), and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) were captured on video migrating upstream to Red Lake in 2022. Additionally, juvenile coho salmon were collected from the lake shoreline during a spring sampling trip. The AVCT operated without interruption and documented 681 sockeye salmon with the peak daily count occurring on June 21. Peak run timing for coho salmon occurred on October 10 with a total observed escapement of 48. The AVCT documented 5 pink salmon and 53 Dolly Varden, as well as a variety of wildlife.

Coastal ecosystems are highly vulnerable to alteration of their physical, chemical and biological characteristics (marine intrusion, acidification of marine environments, changes in ecosystems, evolution and artificialization of the coastline, etc.).In contact with heavily populated areas, these environments are often the receptacle of a lot of chemical and biological pollution sources that significantly diminish their resilience. In this context of accelerated evolution and degradation of these areas important for food security of many populations around the world, it is necessary to better identify the factors of pressure and understand, at different scales of observation, their effects and impacts on the biodiversity and on the socio-eco-systems, in order to determine the degree of vulnerability of these coastal ecosystems and the risks they face. A transdisciplinary and integrated approach is required to prevent risks. Within this framework, operational coastal oceanography occupies an important place but also the implementation of a true socio-eco-system approach in order to set up an environmentally friendly development.

In 2020, Nasdaq proposed a mandate that would require listed companies to have at least two diverse board members with one member who identifies as female. Initiatives like these are helping advance gender parity on boards in many regions, not just the U.S. In late 2020, women held 22.6% of the board seats on the Russell 3000 for the first time, a 6.5 point jump over the past 4 years.Zooming out to the global scale, the picture is similarly improving. In 2020, about 23% of board seats globally were held by women, compared to 20% in 2018. Yet...at the time of this writing, 10% of large global companies do not have a single woman on their board. And the percent of women who chair boards is dramatically smaller. Among the largest 500 public U.S. companies by revenue the share of women who chaired boards remained stagnant at 7.4%. Notably, of those women who chair boards, few of them use the term Chairwoman in their bios or LinkedIn profiles-opting for monikers Chairman, or Board Chair, or occasionally Chairperson.
