Book Red Ghost White Ghost

Download or read book Red Ghost White Ghost written by Morio Kita and published by Cornell East Asia Series. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume introduces short stories and essays by Kita Morio (1927-2011), one of the most significant, prolific, and beloved post-war writers in Japan. Also known by his literary persona, Dokutoru ManbÅ (Doctor Manbo), Kita was a remarkably versatile writer who produced both serious and comical works in a wide variety of genres. The short stories and essays included in this collection have been carefully selected from Kita's large body of writings to exhibit the breadth of his work. The collection includes his autobiographical fiction, comical essays, science fiction, somber fictional stories, and stories for children. Death, a work of autobiographical fiction, depicts the death and the writer's memories of his father, SaitÅ Mokichi, one of the most important poets in modern Japan. Being a psychiatrist and bipolar patient himself, Kita comically talks about his eccentric behavior during the manic state in the essay "I Am a Manic Patient." The title story, "The Red Ghost and the White Ghost," is a children's story about two ghosts who are incapable of scaring people. Although it is a story for children, Kita subtly includes his criticism of modern society where people value only scientific and tangible things.

Book The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories by Women

Download or read book The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories by Women written by Marie O'Regan and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2012-10-18 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 25 chilling short stories by outstanding female writers. Women have always written exceptional stories of horror and the supernatural. This anthology aims to showcase the very best of these, from Amelia B. Edwards's 'The Phantom Coach', published in 1864, through past luminaries such as Edith Wharton and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, to modern talents including Muriel Gray, Sarah Pinborough and Lilith Saintcrow. From tales of ghostly children to visitations by departed loved ones, and from heart-rending stories to the profoundly unsettling depiction of extreme malevolence, what each of these stories has in common is the effect of a slight chilling of the skin, a feeling of something not quite present, but nevertheless there. If anything, this showcase anthology proves that sometimes the female of the species can also be the most terrifying . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A coming of age story of two American sisters in Hong Kong during the late 1960s. “A haunting novel written with the craft and grace of a master” (Isabel Allende). Summer 1967. The turmoil of the Maoist revolution is spilling over into Hong Kong and causing unrest as war rages in neighboring Vietnam. White Ghost Girls is the story of Frankie and Kate, two American sisters living in a foreign land in a chaotic time. With their war-photographer father off in Vietnam, Marianne, their beautiful but remote mother, keeps the family nearby. Although bound by a closeness of living overseas, the sisters could not be more different—Frankie pulses with curiosity and risk, while Kate is all eyes and ears. Marianne spends her days painting watercolors of the lush surroundings, leaving the girls largely unsupervised, while their Chinese nanny, Ah Bing, does her best to look after them. One day in a village market, they decide to explore—with tragic results. In Alice Greenway’s exquisite gem of a novel, two girls tumble into their teenage years against an extraordinary backdrop both sensuous and dangerous. This astonishing literary debut is a tale of sacrifice and solidarity that gleams with the kind of intense, complicated love that only exists between sisters. “Greenway is a remarkable young writer who vividly evokes Hong Kong’s sights, smells, and sounds in poetic, finely detailed prose. What’s more, she seems to have remembered every single charged emotion from adolescence and filters them all through the sisters’ fierce, complex relationship. A heartbreakingly beautiful debut.” —Booklist, starred review

Book The Legend of the Red Ghost

Download or read book The Legend of the Red Ghost written by Michael L. Williams and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As quickly as I emerged from the bushes I turned and there, running toward us on the dirt road, was the most gruesome creature I had ever seen in my life. The creature was red and looked to be 10 to 12 feet tall and ran on four legs. On his back sat a human skeleton. Behind him sat the large, red setting sun. It looked as if the monster was riding out of the sun. The skeleton's jaw was agape as if he were laughing at us, jeering at us, striking fear into our hearts. The creature careened toward us at a frightening pace. I was almost frozen in fear. 'Run, Joseph, run!' I screamed. I reached over and grabbed the frightened boy with one hand and began to pull him along behind me as quickly as my legs would carry me. We ran back into the woods. The twigs and branches of the bushes and trees snapped as we plunged into the forest. The briars and thorns tore at our clothes and our flesh. Joseph emitted a scream. “Run faster!” he shouted. “It's right behind us!” The thunderous hooves got louder as the creature picked up speed and bore down on us." The Legend of the Red Ghost is inspired by actual events as told by 16-year-old Kip Young. Kip craves adventure and an escape from the uneventful life in a frontier boom town. Kip's life is anything but ideyllic. His younger brother, Charlie, suffers a congenital heart defect that threatens his life. One evening, a strange creature appears in the countryside terrorizing the townsfolk. It was described as running on four legs and covered with red fur. Most ominous of all was the spectral rider that sat on its back. Witnesses described a human skeleton that brandished a sword. Charlie soon becomes convinced the monster, known as "the Red Ghost," is the incarnation of Death itself. Charlie overhears several townsfolk discussing the monster. They refer to it as one of the seven horsemen of the Apocalypse. Others refer to it as the devil's stead. Certain he is going to die, Charlie becomes depressed. Kip decides to track down the creature to discover its true origin and protect his brother.

Book excerpt: 'It's enthralling stuff, mixing the scholarly with the accessible and placing storytelling right at the heart of the human experience.' - History Revealed 'A fascinating journey' - Yorkshire Post 'Marvellous...Finkel is an expert in Mesopotamian cultures at the British Museum, and is one of the most clever, and nicest, of people it has ever been my pleasure to encounter...A fascinating journey' - The Scotsman There are few things more in common across cultures than the belief in ghosts. Ghosts inhabit something of the very essence of what it is to be human. Whether we personally 'believe' or not, we are all aware of ghosts and the rich mythologies and rituals surrounding them. They have inspired, fascinated and frightened us for centuries - yet most of us are only familiar with the vengeful apparitions of Shakespeare, or the ghastly spectres haunting the pages of 19th century gothic literature. But their origins are much, much older... The First Ghosts: Most Ancient of Legacies takes us back to the very beginning. A world-renowned authority on cuneiform, the form of writing on clay tablets which dates back to 3400BC, Irving Finkel has embarked upon an ancient ghost hunt, scouring these tablets to unlock the secrets of the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians to breathe new life into the first ghost stories ever written. In The First Ghosts, he uncovers an extraordinarily rich seam of ancient spirit wisdom which has remained hidden for nearly 4000 years, covering practical details of how to live with ghosts, how to get rid of them and bring them back, and how to avoid becoming one, as well as exploring more philosophical questions: what are ghosts, why does the idea of them remain so powerful despite the lack of concrete evidence, and what do they tell us about being human?
