Book A Treatise on the Origin Nature and Varieties of Wine

Download or read book A Treatise on the Origin Nature and Varieties of Wine written by John Louis William Thudichum and published by . This book was released on 1872 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thudichum was a medical practioner and Dupré a Professor of Chemistry; their work is a valuable contribution to the literature of the wine trade, chiefly as a résumé of all that had been written in England, during the sixties, in favour of "Natural Wines", and also of what had been published in France and Germany about viticulture and the art of wine-making. There are many blemishes in the book, due to the fact that the two authors lacked practical knowledge of wine, and were too ready to ignore or deny what they failed to understand or were unable to explain scientifically. With all its faults, this book is nevertheless the most comprehensive modern treatise on the wine and its fruit in the English language." - Gabler, J.M. Wine into words ; A. Simon, Bibiliotheca vinaria, p. 13.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following the French Revolution, four artists - Girodet, Gros, Gericault, and Delacroix - painted works in their Parisian studios that vividly expressed violent events in faraway, colonial lands. This book examines six of these paintings and argues that their disturbing, erotic depictions of slavery, revolt, plague, decapitation, cannibalism, massacre, and abduction chart the history of France's empire and colonial politics. Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby shows that these paintings about occurrences in the West Indies, Syria, Egypt, Senegal, and Ottoman Empire Greece are preoccupied not with mastery and control but with loss, degradation, and failure, and she explains how such representations of crises in the colonies were able to answer the artists' longings as well as the needs of the government and the opposition parties at home. Empire made painters devoted to the representation of liberty and the new French nation confront liberty's antithesis: slavery. It also forced them to contend with cultural and racial difference. Young male artists responded, says Grigsby, by translating distant crises into images of challenges to the self, making history painting the site where geographic extremities and bodily extremities articulated one another.

Download or read book Fellow Men written by Bridget Alsdorf and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the art of Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) and his colleagues Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Frédéric Bazille, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Fellow Men argues for the importance of the group as a defining subject of nineteenth-century French painting. Through close readings of some of the most ambitious paintings of the realist and impressionist generation, Bridget Alsdorf offers new insights into how French painters understood the shifting boundaries of their social world, and reveals the fragile masculine bonds that made up the avant-garde. A dedicated realist who veered between extremes of sociability and hermetic isolation, Fantin-Latour painted group dynamics over the course of two decades, from 1864 to 1885. This was a period of dramatic change in French history and art--events like the Paris Commune and the rise and fall of impressionism raised serious doubts about the power of collectivism in art and life. Fantin-Latour's monumental group portraits, and related works by his friends and colleagues from the 1850s through the 1880s, represent varied visions of collective identity and test the limits of association as both a social and an artistic pursuit. By examining the bonds and frictions that animated their social circles, Fantin-Latour and his cohorts developed a new pictorial language for the modern group: one of fragmentation, exclusion, and willful withdrawal into interior space that nonetheless presented individuality as radically relational.
