Book 3 000 Years of War and Peace in the Maya Lowlands

Download or read book 3 000 Years of War and Peace in the Maya Lowlands written by Geoffrey E. Braswell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3,000 Years of War and Peace in the Maya Lowlands presents the cutting-edge research of 25 authors in the fields of archaeology, biological anthropology, art history, ethnohistory, and epigraphy. Together, they explore issues central to ancient Maya identity, political history, and warfare. The Maya lowlands of Guatemala, Belize, and southeast Mexico have witnessed human occupation for at least 11,000 years, and settled life reliant on agriculture began some 3,100 years ago. From the earliest times, Maya communities expressed their shifting identities through pottery, architecture, stone tools, and other items of material culture. Although it is tempting to think of the Maya as a single unified culture, they were anything but homogeneous, and differences in identity could be expressed through violence. 3,000 Years of War and Peace in the Maya Lowlands explores the formation of identity, its relationship to politics, and its manifestation in warfare from the earliest pottery-making villages through the late colonial period by studying the material remains and written texts of the Maya. This volume is an invaluable reference for students and scholars of the ancient Maya, including archaeologists, art historians, and anthropologists.

Companies Jump into Coronavirus Fight 企業伸援手,共同面對新冠肺炎 -Jay Sailors 8/4 When the coronavirus became a pandemic earlier this year, companies and business leaders around the world wasted no time in joining the fight against it. Their efforts, often creative, included making protective gear for hospitals and frontline health-care workers, producing vital equipment for saving patients’ lives, and, perhaps most importantly, supplying the funds and resources needed to develop a vaccine. Back in March, when many places began experiencing shortages of essential supplies, some companies realized they could help by adapting their production equipment to new uses. For instance, when hand sanitizer became scarce, luxury goods company LVMH, owner of high-end brands like Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, and Givenchy, used three of its perfume factories in France to turn out tons of hand-sanitizing gel for hospital workers. Other big names in fashion, including Ralph Lauren and Carolina Herrera, contributed to relief efforts by producing face masks and medical gowns. And if the correct material wasn’t on hand, no problem. Fanatics, maker of baseball jerseys, stepped up to the plate and produced protective masks and gowns using the same material they normally use to make baseball uniforms. 8/5 A vital piece of medical equipment for treating COVID-19 patients is the ventilator, a machine that helps patients breathe. As the number of gravely ill patients grew, many hospitals were experiencing drastic shortages of this much-needed device. That’s when automobile companies General Motors, Mercedes-AMG, and Tesla stepped in to help by producing these lifesaving devices. Business leaders also joined in the fight, among the most noticeable being Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who put almost one-third of his $3.6 billion fortune into a coronavirus relief fund. Meanwhile, Bill Gates, Alibaba founder Jack Ma, and others together pledged over US$1.2 billion toward various efforts. The most important goal, though, has been finding a vaccine, and here the contribution of entrepreneurs isn’t lacking either. Through his foundation, Bill Gates plans to fund the construction of factories for seven coronavirus vaccine candidates, with the goal of selecting one or two that would most likely be successful. COVID-19 has produced the biggest health and economic crisis the world has experienced in decades. It’s good to know that such companies and business leaders have, with their global reach, contributed to the fight against this disease. Pandemic Could Cause Famines of “Biblical Proportions” 新冠肺炎疫情可能導致「聖經等級」饑荒 Corporate Contribution 企業回饋 Companies Jump into Coronavirus Fight 企業伸援手,共同面對新冠肺炎 Culture 文化理解 Don’t Stand So Close to Me! 個人空間停看聽 CNN News Taiwan’s Baseball Season Kicks Off—with a New Global Fan Base 台灣棒球季領先全球開打 Dialogue Focus 情境對話 A World of Animals 圖解動物英語 Going to the Zoo! 來去動物園! Book Child of Light

Download or read book Child of Light written by Madison Smartt Bell and published by Doubleday. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first and definitive biography of one of the great American novelists of the postwar era, the author of Dog Soldiers and A Flag for Sunrise, and a penetrating critic of American power, innocence, and corruption Robert Stone (1937-2015), probably the only postwar American writer to draw favorable comparisons to Ernest Hemingway, Graham Greene, and Joseph Conrad, lived a life rich in adventure, achievement, and inner turmoil. He grew up rough on the streets of New York, the son of a mentally troubled single mother. After his Navy service in the fifties, which brought him to such locales as pre-Castro Havana, the Suez Crisis, and Antarctica, he studied writing at Stanford, where he met Ken Kesey and became a core member of the gang of Merry Pranksters. The publication of his superb New Orleans novel, Hall of Mirrors (1967), initiated a succession of dark-humored novels that investigated the American experience in Vietnam (Dog Soldiers, 1974, which won the National Book Award), Central America (A Flag for Sunrise, 1981), and Jerusalem on the eve of the millennium (Damascus Gate, 1998). An acclaimed novelist himself, Madison Smartt Bell was a close friend and longtime admirer of Robert Stone. His authorized and deeply researched biography is both intimate and objective, a rich and unsparing portrait of a complicated, charismatic, and haunted man and a sympathetic reading of his work that will help to secure Stone's place in the pantheon of major American writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apparitions of the Self is a groundbreaking investigation into what is known in Tibet as "secret autobiography," an exceptional, rarely studied literary genre that presents a personal exploration of intimate religious experiences. In this volume, Janet Gyatso translates and studies the outstanding pair of secret autobiographies by the famed Tibetan Buddhist visionary, Jigme Lingpa (1730-1798), whose poetic and self-conscious writings are as much about the nature of his own identity, memory, and the undecidabilities of autobiographical truth as they are narrations of the actual content of his experiences. Their translation in this book marks the first time that works of this sort have been translated in a Western language. Gyatso is among the first to consider Tibetan literature from a comparative perspective, examining the surprising fit--as well as the misfit--of Western literary theory with Tibetan autobiography. She examines the intriguing questions of why Tibetan Buddhists produced so many autobiographies (far more than other Asian Buddhists) and how autobiographical self-assertion is possible even while Buddhists believe that the self is ultimately an illusion. Also explored are Jigme Lingpa's historical milieu, his revelatory visions of the ancient Tibetan dynasty, and his meditative practices of personal cultivation. The book concludes with a study of the subversive female figure of the "Dakini" in Jigme Lingpa's writings, and the implications of her gender, her sexuality, and her unsettling discourse for the autobiographical subject in Tibet.
