  • Author : Elizabeth A. Clark
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book The Origenist Controversy written by Elizabeth A. Clark and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the turn of the fifth century, Christian theologians and churchmen contested each other's orthodoxy and good repute by hurling charges of "Origenism" at their opponents. And although orthodoxy was more narrowly defined by that era than during Origen's lifetime in the third century, his speculative, Platonizing theology was not the only issue at stake in the Origenist controversy: "Origen" became a code word for nontheological complaints as well. Elizabeth Clark explores the theological and extra-theological implications of the dispute, uses social network analysis to explain the personal alliances and enmities of its participants, and suggests how it prefigured modern concerns with the status of representation, the social construction of the body, and praxis vis--vis theory. Shaped by the Trinitarian and ascetic debates, and later to influence clashes between Augustine and the Pelagians, the Origenist controversy intersected with patristic campaigns against pagan "idolatry" and Manichean and astrological determinism. Discussing Evagrius Ponticus, Epiphanius, Theophilus, Jerome, Shenute, and Rufinus in turn, Clark concludes by showing how Augustine's theory of original sin reconstructed the Origenist theory of the soul's pre-existence and "fall" into the body. Book The Concept of Religion

Download or read book The Concept of Religion written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Concept of Religion Hans Schilderman edits a volume on the definition and empirical study of religion within the changing landscape of modern society. Now that we can no longer assume a simple harmony between the scientific concept of religion, church doctrine and practiced belief, issues concerning the definition and measurement of religion are becoming crucial issues to academic institutions. The contributing authors present empirical studies studying issues of lifespan and socialisation at school settings; of vocation and profession at church and hospital settings; and culture and nation of society at large. The volume offers a beautiful sample of the empirical study of religion; a conceptual and illustrative overview of the academic field for students and scholars in religion.

Book Comparative Mysticism

Download or read book Comparative Mysticism written by Steven T. Katz and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2013 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of primary texts introduces readers to the mystical literature of the world's great religious traditions. Beginning with an introduction by Steven T. Katz, a leading scholar of mysticism, the anthology comprises poetry, prayer, narrative, and other writings from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, Confucianist, and Native American traditions. This collection provides readers not only with the primary mystical texts from each religious tradition, but with an explanation of the context of the source and tradition. Comparative Mysticism shows how the great mystical traditions of the world are deeply rooted in the religious traditions from which they originated. The contextual methodological approach taken throughout the anthology also addresses the critical question of what these mystical traditions, at their highest level, have in common. Despite the prevailing view that mystical traditions throughout the world are essentially similar, the presentation of the sources in this volume suggests that, in fact, the various traditions have distinct teachings and different metaphysical goals. The writings collected in Comparative Mysticism address the most fundamental and important methodological, epistemological, and hermeneutical questions regarding the study and interpretation of mysticism and mystical sources across cultures. This anthology will be an invaluable resource to students and scholars of mystic tradition for years to come.

Book Essentials of Christian Faith

Download or read book Essentials of Christian Faith written by Jack Cottrell and published by College Press. This book was released on 1992-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this scathing indictment of modern America, editor Steve Burris takes us on a pilgrimage that is foundational. It is necessary that we go back to fundamental matters at this point in our history, he writes. We live in an instant culture. We have come to expect instantaneous answers to all of life's questions. Yet, he notes, we are called by God to be the light and salt of the earth even as problems of the world permeate the church and threaten it. It is from this need that Essentials of Christian Faith was born. That is why Burris has drawn together many of the most influential and prolific Restoration writers. As a Christian, what is essential that you know and believe? The answer to that question is here in Essentials of Christian Faith.
