Book The Flower of Youth

Download or read book The Flower of Youth written by Mary di Michele and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a kind of historical narrative in verse, the poems in this collection depict the coming of age and sexual awareness of the great Italian writer and film director, Pier Paolo Pasolini. The time of this story is World War II; the place is German-occupied northern Italy. Unlike his younger brother, Guido, who took up arms to fight in the resistance, Pasolini chose to help his mother set up a school for the boys too young to fight or be conscripted. The situation ignited an internal war for the young Pasolini that nearly eclipsed the historical moment: a battle within between his desire for boys and his Catholic faith and culture. In addition to the poems that juxtapose Pasolini’s struggle against the backdrop of political and cultural fascism, the book also includes a prologue and an epilogue that details the author’s pilgrimage to the site and her research into the time that shaped Pasolini as a man and as an artist.

Book New View of the Irish Language

Download or read book New View of the Irish Language written by Caoilfhionn Nic Phaidin and published by Cois Life. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1871 census came to the stark conclusion that 'within relatively few years' Irish would cease to exist. Yet, over a century later, Irish became the twenty-third officially recognized language of the European Union in 2007. To believe the census returns of recent years, Irish is in a state of rude health. But is this true when half a million people claim to speak Irish, but seldom actually speak it? In the traditional Gaeltacht areas, Irish is in peril - whilst it flourishes in Gaelscoileanna, in urban areas and in cyberspace. What do these dramatic shifts mean for the language's future?A New View of the Irish Language covers issues such as language and national identity; the impact of emigration and immigration; music, literature and the media; the importance of place-names; teaching and learning Irish; attitudes towards Irish; and the state of the Gaeltacht - and probes beyond the statistics and rhetoric to explore the true situation of Irish in the contemporary world.Contributors: Ruair hUiginn, Pdraig Riagin, Liam Mac Mathna, Mirn Nic Eoin, Liam Muirthile, Gearid Tuathaigh, John Harris, Breandn Delap, Conchr Giollagin & Seosamh Mac Donnacha, Caoilfhionn Nic Phidn, Pdraig Laighin, Lillis Laoire, Anna N Ghallachair, Ciarn Mac Murchaidh, Brian Conchubhair, Aidan Doyle, Aidan Punch, Suzanne Romaine, Dnall Mac Giolla Easpaig and Iarfhlaith Watson.

Book Translating Ireland

Download or read book Translating Ireland written by Michael Cronin and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Translating Ireland explores centuries of translation activity during which the languages, cultures and literatures of Ireland have been affected by the work of Irish translators in Ireland and elsewhere. Translation in Ireland has functioned as a weapon of political propaganda, an agent of linguistic reform, and a catalyst for cultural renewal and yet the activity of translators during often controversial circumstances has remained unacknowledged." "In this pioneering study Michael Cronin examines the widespread translation activity in Ireland in the Middle Ages and argues for a re-evaluation of the work of translators from that period. He then examines the central role of translation in the political and cultural upheaval of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, particularly the theoretical responses of translators to changing political conditions. Antiquarianism, the Celtic Revival and emergent nationalism in the nineteenth century are all bound up with the act of translation and Translating Ireland analyses the tensions and competing cultural allegiances of translators in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Literary revival in both English and Irish looked to translation as a source of a creative energy and the new state saw translation as both necessary and desirable. There is an analysis of the fortunes of translation in Ireland in the twentieth century, both as pragmatic activity in an officially bilingual state and as a way of opening the languages and literatures of Ireland to the literatures and cultural experiences of other peoples." "Translating Ireland examines what happens in the contact zone between languages and how translation affects both the development of language and literature and the construction of identity. In a country that has witnessed radical changes in language use over the centuries, translation has become an important element in political, linguistic and cultural self-knowledge."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
