Download or read book Ordines Coronationis Franciae Volume 1 written by Richard A. Jackson and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ordines coronationis are essentially the scripts for the coronation of Frankish and French sovereigns. Combining detailed religious, ceremonial, and political material, they are an extraordinarily important source for the study of individual rulers or dynasties, as well as for the study of kingship, queenship, and the evolution of political institutions. Complete in two volumes, Richard A. Jackson's is the first full edition of these texts, including all the ordines from the early thirteenth century through the end of the fifteenth century, a period during which the texts shift from Latin to the vernacular, and the institutions of kingship become distinctively French.

Download or read book Councils and Clerical Culture in the Medieval West written by Richard Kay and published by Variorum Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point for the majority of the articles collected here is the study of church councils and their procedures, with a focus on 13th-century France. The author's concern has been to remedy some of the inadequacies of the existing conciliar corpus and its documentation; one group of studies also describes a number of liturgical manuscripts that contain the ceremonials employed at these councils. Others reflect a broader interest in clerical and legal culture, centering around Dante and his intended readership. Finally, several studies are devoted to particular historiographical questions arising from this work, notably Franco-papal relations, the origins of French clerical taxation, and the conflict between Boniface VIII and Philip the Fair.

Book excerpt: The Henry Bradshaw Society was established in 1890 in commemoration of Henry Bradshaw, University Librarian in Cambridge and a distinguished authority on early medieval manuscripts and liturgies, who died in 1886. The Society was founded `for the editing of rare liturgical texts'; its principal focus is on the Western (Latin) Church and its rites, and on the medieval period in particular, from the sixth century to the sixteenth (in effect, from the earliest surviving Christian books until the Reformation). Liturgy was at the heart of Christian worship, and during the medieval period the Christian Church was at the heart of Western society. Study of medieval Christianity in its manifold aspects - historical, ecclesiastical, spiritual, sociological - inevitably involves study of its rites, and for that reason Henry Bradshaw Society publications have become standard source-books for an understanding of all aspects of the middle ages. Moreover, many of the Society's publications have been facsimile editions, and these facsimiles have become cornerstones of the science of palaeography. The society was founded for the editing of rare liturgical texts; its principal focus is on the Western (Latin) Church and its rites, and on the medieval period in particular, from the sixth century to the Reformation. Study of medieval Christianity - at the heart of Western society - inevitably involves study of its rites, and the society's publications are essential to an understanding of all aspects (historical, ecclesiastical, spiritual, sociological) of the middle ages.
