Book Violence and the State in Languedoc 1250 1400

Download or read book Violence and the State in Languedoc 1250 1400 written by Justine Firnhaber-Baker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is often assumed that resurgent royal government eliminated so-called 'private warfare', the French judicial archives reveal nearly one hundred such wars waged in Languedoc and the Auvergne between the mid-thirteenth and the end of the fourteenth century. Royal administrators often intervened in these wars, but not always in order to suppress 'private violence' in favour of 'public justice'. They frequently recognised elites' own power and legitimate prerogatives, and elites were often fully complicit with royal intervention. Much of the engagement between royal officers and local elites came through informal processes of negotiation and settlement, rather than through the imposition of official justice. The expansion of royal authority was due as much to local cooperation as to conflict, a fact that ensured its survival during the fourteenth-century crises. This book thus provides a narrative of the rise of the French state and a fresh perspective on aristocratic violence.

Book Canon Law and the Letters of Ivo of Chartres

Download or read book Canon Law and the Letters of Ivo of Chartres written by Christof Rolker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivo of Chartres was one of the most learned scholars of his time, a powerful bishop and a major figure in the so-called 'Investiture Contest'. Christof Rolker here offers a major new study of Ivo, his works and the role he played in the intellectual, religious and political culture of medieval Europe around 1100 AD. Comparing Ivo's extensive correspondence to the contemporary canon law collections attributed to him, Dr Rolker provides a new interpretation of their authorship. Contrary to current assumptions, he reveals that Ivo did not compile the Panormia, showing that its compiler worked in a distinctly different mental framework from Ivo. These findings call for a reassessment of the relationship between Church reform and scholasticism and shed new light on Ivo as both a scholar and bishop.

Book The Second Crusade and the Cistercians

Download or read book The Second Crusade and the Cistercians written by M. Gervers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No subject in medieval history is changing as rapidly as crusade studies. Even so, the Second Crusade has been oddly neglected. The present volume is the first ever to have been devoted to it in English and one of the few which has appeared in any language. Particular attention is paid to the key role played by St.Bernard and the Cistercians in this crusade and their relations with the Military Orders. An interdisciplinary approach is taken, incorporating history, art and music. The Volume contains unparalleled bibliography, listing over 700 primary and secondary sources.
