Book Attitudes Aptitudes and Aspirations of American Youth

Download or read book Attitudes Aptitudes and Aspirations of American Youth written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruiting an all-volunteer military is a formidable task. To successfully enlist one eligible recruit, the Army must contact approximately 120 young people. The National Research Council explores the various factors that will determine whether the military can realistically expect to recruit an adequate fighting force-one that will meet its upcoming needs. It also assesses the military's expected manpower needs and projects the numbers of youth who are likely to be available over the next 20 years to meet these needs. With clearly written text and useful graphics, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth offers an overview of important issues for military recruiters, touching on a number of important topics including: sex and race, education and aptitude, physical and moral attributes, and military life and working conditions. In addition, the book looks at how a potential recruit would approach the decision to enlist, considering personal, family, and social values, and the options for other employment or college. Building on the need to increase young Americans' "propensity to enlist," this book offers useful recommendations for increasing educational opportunities while in the service and for developing advertising strategies that include concepts of patriotism and duty to country. Of primary value to military policymakers, recruitment officers, and analysts, Attitudes, Aptitudes, and Aspirations of American Youth will also interest social scientists and policy makers interested in youth trends.

Book Recruiting and Retention A Force Planning Dilemma

Download or read book Recruiting and Retention A Force Planning Dilemma written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the future, the U.S. Armed Forces may suffer negative force planning consequences because of an inability to recruit and retain the quality personnel necessary to perform its mission, and transform itself for the 21st century. As the economy rebounds from the post September 11th slow down, and the Department of Defense intensifies its transformation, it is increasingly important to examine the factors and variables necessary to sustain the quality and commitment of the men and women who will make up the force of the future. Different types of battlefields, changing roles and missions, multiple flash points around the globe - all of these factors and more dictate the need for maintaining a high level of manpower quality. The focus of this paper is on the trends and factors influencing recruiting and retention, and how they may impact the quality and readiness of the future force. Among the trends and factors influencing recruiting are demographics, economics, education, patriotism, and propensity to serve in the military. Retention is impacted by economics, but also by organizational leadership, job satisfaction, compensation benefits, and quality of life. What are the critical factors? What is the magnitude and direction of the underlying trends? Finally, how will the military's ability to recruit and retain quality personnel influence future force structure, and other areas that will determine whether the men and women in the military can meet the future needs of the military service's transformation efforts, and the needs of our national security. This paper will begin by primarily discussing the need for quality personnel, then recruiting trends, followed by retention concerns, and finally it will proffer some recommendations for enhancing these areas, as well as new approaches for the future.

Book Recruiting Retention and Future Levels of Military Personnel

Download or read book Recruiting Retention and Future Levels of Military Personnel written by Emmanuel D. Chapman and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the U.S. military's ability to maintain the force levels required for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan which rests on recruiting and retaining service members. Some military analysts and policymakers have expressed concern that the ongoing operations could detrimentally affect both recruiting and retention. The proportion of youth who say that they may join the military increased after September 11, 2001, but according to the Department of Defense (DoD) survey of parents and other adults who influence youths' decisions, a majority in 2005 said that they were less likely to recommend military service because of the war in Iraq. In this study, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) examines the recruiting and retention rates for enlisted personnel within each of the military components, the factors that may influence enlistment and reenlistment, and the implications of changes in each component's success in recruiting and retaining service members. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.
