Book Recreations of a Naturalist Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recreations of a Naturalist Classic Reprint written by James Edmund Harting and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recreations of a Naturalist The expression of these respectable Opinions may not inaptly serve by way of preface to the present volume. The essays here collected relate both to outdoor and indoor recreations in the sense above indicated, and the author can truly say that while devotion to field sports has afforded him the chiefest pleasure in life, he has sometimes derived almost as much enjoyment - metaphorically speaking - in finding a hare in the library, and hunting it through the preserves of ancient authors until the hunt had a happy termination, or the literary hare escaped to give sport another day. The majority of these essays were contributed at intervals to the Natural History columns Of Tne Fiela', and my acknowledgments are therefore due to the proprietors of that journal for their courtesy in permitting me to reprint them. They may be said to form a second series of a similar collection published some years ago with the title, Essays on Spent and Natural History. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hermit Naturalist On a frosty morning in the autumn of '93, when I was laboriously rowing against the strong current of the Delaware, above tide. Water, in search of a specimen of wild fowl for my cabinet, I saw the old hermit, sitting likea statue in his anchored boat. His shotgun rested on his knees, and he was evidently awaiting a shot at the wild-fowl that occasion ally y over at this season of the year. Aux ious to secure a nearer view of my hermit friend, I rowed towards him in such a manner as not to arouse his suspicions of my curiosity inspired purpose. I rowed but a short distance when I observed a fine ock of wild ducks y over me. At once I turned my attention to the lone sportsman. He also saw the game and was standing easily in his boat and taking care ful aim. As the ock passed directly over him he fired, when to my surprise and horror, he lost his balance, dropped his gun and madly grasped at the side of his boat as he went over board and disappeared from my anxious gaze, in the swiftly rushing current. Believing the current would carry him far below his anchored boat, I pulled with all my strength to intercept him as he came down stream. Soon his head appeared above the surface of the water, a hun dred yards or so from me. Increasing my efforts I soon rested in his way as the swift current swept him toward me, and I called to him to seize hold of my boat. He was an ex pert swimmer and soon grasped the stern of my boat, when I shipped my oars, and helped him aboard, chilled from the effects of his untimely bath. When safely seated in my boat, and having recovered his breath after his exhausting efforts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Playtime Naturalist Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Playtime Naturalist Classic Reprint written by John Ellor Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Playtime Naturalist The writer of this book has a liking for intelligent English lads, just as some people have for blue china and etchings. He ventures to think the former are even more interesting objects. And, as the writer was once a boy himself, and vividly remembers the never-to-be-forgotten rambles and Observations of the Objects in the country; and, moreover, as he treasures up such reminiscences as the most pleasant and innocent of an active man's life, he thought he could not do better than enlist this younger generation in the same loves and the same pleasures. He has endeavoured to do his best for his human hobbies, and hopes their lives may be richer and sweeter and more. Book The Home of a Naturalist Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Home of a Naturalist Classic Reprint written by Biot Edmondston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home of a Naturalist Somewhere in the mysterious space in the roof was stored for some years a collection of stuffed animals, the gifts of well-known naturalists. These creatures were periodically put out on the lawn to air; and a queer sensation they produced there. The domestic animals took flight, all except the dogs, which showed fight at first; but soon learned that the fierce, wild beasts had long since ceased to claw. Unfortunately, the small house, crowded with children and other live dependents, had but sorry accommodation for the stuffed beasts, which in course of time began to look mangy to a degree. At last, some wise person suggested that the collection was decidedly bad for people, and a bonfire was made of it. Armadillo, sloth, tiger, bear, and bison, surmounted by a boa constrictor - whose internal arrangement of arsenical soaped stuffing had been leaking all about the place for months - made a grand pyre, round which the dogs and haims bounced delightedly. Book Adventures of a Young Naturalist Classic Reprint

Download or read book Adventures of a Young Naturalist Classic Reprint written by Lucien Biart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of a Young Naturalist There is no country on the face of the earth that pos sesses greater interest in the eyes of the scientific or travelled than Mexico, the scene where the adventures so graphically and clearly narrated in this volume transpired nor is this partiality to be wondered at when we recall to memory what a lavish hand Nature has subtended to her. Although several of our most celebrated naturalists have climbed its lofty volcanic mountains, explored its lagoons and giant rivers, and traversed its immense forests, still, from the vast extent of that country and variety of climate - caused by difference of elevation - much yet remains to be done ere the public become thoroughly conversant with its arboreal and zoological productions. Book The Walks Abroad of Two Young Naturalists Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Walks Abroad of Two Young Naturalists Classic Reprint written by Charles Beaugrand and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Walks Abroad of Two Young Naturalists Though the majority of mankind are firmly convinced that The proper study of mankind is man, yet they are also generally disposed to admit that some devia tion from the various beaten tracks of existence is advantageous. Not very long ago one of the most accomplished of our medical men, Sir James Paget, in Opening a session of the Working Men's College, delivered an address on Recreation. In eloquent words he declared this to be an absolute necessity for our system, and he laid stress on the great value, in this capacity, of hunting fishing, shooting, and even of games of chance. There is probably no change more recreative to the mind and body, fatigued by long continuance of daily routine, than natural history. In its pursuit, physical exertion in the fresh air vies with change of mental pabulum, and the wonderful variety of inexhaustible nature brings to the mind a feeling compounded of astonishment and satisfaction that is highly recreative. Unfortunately, few can undertake the pursuit of natural history without some kind of assistance. A certain amount of book-knowledge is found to be indispensable, and yet, to the mind not accustomed to them, preliminary definitions and statements about unfamiliar objects are apt to prove so dry as to smother the nascent interest instead of stimulating and encouraging it. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sportsman and Naturalist in Canada, or Notes on the Natural History of the Game, Game Birds and Fish of That Country The climate is as healthy as it is delightful, at all seasons: whether in the glorious days of 'summer, when ruby-throated humming-birds flit from flower to flower; in the glowing autumn, when tints of brightness unknown in other lands invest the forest with their gorgeous mantle; in the dreamy softness of that wonderful period called the Indian summer or in the clear glistening winter, with its sparkling fields of pure snow, its cloudless blue skies, and merry sleigh-bells. During sojourn in these regions, extending over a period of three years, constantly rod in hand or roaming the woods with dog and gun, I habitually recorded in my note-book memoranda on the haunts and habits of the birds and animals which I have endeavoured to describe in the succeeding pages; and I can only hope that my jottings may be useful to those who read them, with the view of themselves enjoying the same pursuits, and interesting to those who would recal similar bygone days of agreeable recreation.
