Mehalik and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzed gambling behaviors among Club/Intramural/Recreational (CIR) athletes attending state and private universities in Southwestern Pennsylvania. More specifically, the researcher examined CIR student athlete’s gambling behavior and participation in gambling activities at Division II institutions, including mid-sized state/public colleges or universities, and Division III institutions, including small private colleges or universities. Using a Survey Research Design, this study identified significant group differences in gambling involvement, types of gambling students participate in, and gambling related issues/problems across CIR student athlete/nonathlete populations as well as across Division II and III institutions. This study fills a gap in academic literature pertaining to gambling behavior and CIR athletes. Additionally, this research study adds to the existing literature to help better understand gambling behaviors, problem gambling, and pathological gambling occurring with college students. The findings of this study have the ability to impact the way gambling prevention programs are presented and administered to college students and specific student populations.

Book Predictors of Different Types of Recreational Gambling Among College Students

Download or read book Predictors of Different Types of Recreational Gambling Among College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examined the prevalence, frequency, and predictors of gambling among young adult college students. Nine hundred and fourteen undergraduates from a Mid-Atlantic public university completed a survey to assess gambling behaviors and problems, along with various psychosocial factors that may account for gambling behaviors. Among the entire sample, 53% (n= 461) reported participating in some form of gambling activity during the past year. The most frequently endorsed gambling activity was playing board or card games for money, followed by playing the lottery, and betting on games of personal skill. In contrast to expectations, online gambling was not prevalent. Most student gamblers in this sample gambled for recreational reasons; only 2.5% and 1.5% fell in the problem or pathological range, respectively. Hierarchical regression analyses found different predictors for the two types of gambling, gaming activities and sports betting. Being male and high on novelty/excitement seeking were significantly related to the number of gaming activities participated in during the past year by college students. Binge drinking showed a strong trend as a predictor. For sports betting, being male accounted for the greatest amount of variance and binge drinking in the past year emerged as the only other significant predictor. Being Caucasian, however, showed a strong explanatory trend. Together, these findings provide valuable information about the predictors of college students' recreational gambling, which was found to represent the vast majority of all gambling behaviors among this sample of college students.

Download or read book Gambling and Gender written by Deborah K. Phillips and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two distinct strands in the literature on gambling: one that focuses on how to play and win the various games of chance and one that focuses on gambling compulsion and addiction. Gambling and Gender forges a new direction, studying gambling as more communication than compulsion, more recreation than deviance, more sociology than psychology. Within that framework it seeks to explore several aspects of gender: How do the gambling behaviors of men and women differ? How have women adapted to and/or changed the historically male dominance of the gambling arena? What gambling activities have women claimed as their own and used to develop uniquely female relationships? How have recent trends in technology and mass media changed the ways in which men and women claim - or reject - their gender identities? The authors use a variety of research strategies, including content analysis, survey research, interviews, and participative observation, to shed new light on this fascinating subject and to suggest ways to explore it further.

Book The Changing Landscape of Gambling Among College Student athletes

Download or read book The Changing Landscape of Gambling Among College Student athletes written by Rayna Sansanwal and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Given the rise in the availability, accessibility, and appeal of gambling activities, gambling as a high-risk behaviour has become a major concern among college students. Student-athletes, in particular, represent a vulnerable subgroup of the college student population with regards to engagement in gambling activities, as prevalence studies have consistently indicated that student-athletes who participate in club or intercollegiate sports are significantly more likely to experience gambling-related problems than their non-athletic counterparts. This thesis is comprised of two manuscripts that aimed to extend current research regarding gambling behaviours and attitudes among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) student-athletes by conducting a cross comparison of survey data collected from three large samples of NCAA student-athletes in 2004, 2008, and 2012 regarding gambling behaviours and attitudes in order to gain insight into how the landscape of gambling and attitudes among college student-athletes has changed within the last eight-years in relation to the ongoing expansion of gambling opportunities. The first manuscript paid particular attention to gender and sport affiliation differences; while the second manuscript focused on divisional differences. It was expected that student-athletes would progressively show more pro-gambling attitudes towards over the eight-year span, which would result in an increase in gambling participation rates between 2004 and 2012. Results indicated that gambling, as a recreational activity, was perceived as being more acceptable in 2012 than in previous years. However, despite this surge in pro-gambling attitudes, gambling participation rates were generally lowest for all gambling activities in 2012. Therefore, the results suggest that in spite of the growth of the gambling industry, gambling activity among student-athletes is on a downward trend. Outcomes of the current research not only inform NCAA policies surrounding gambling, but also aid in the development of educational, prevention, and intervention initiatives at the college level. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth gambling represents a potentially serious public policy and health issue. Nevertheless, the rise in youth gambling issues and problems in the global context is not matched with a parallel increase in research on adolescent gambling. As such, there is an urgent need to conduct more studies on adolescent gambling behaviour. Recently significant advances in the knowledge of the risk factors associated with adolescent problems has emerged. This book addresses issues related to prevalence, assessment, prevention and treatment of youth gambling problems as well as concerns related to technological changes associated with youth problem gambling.

Book An Examination of Gambling Impacts on SUNY Cortland Students

Download or read book An Examination of Gambling Impacts on SUNY Cortland Students written by Lin Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many college students participate in gambling-related activities during their leisure time. This study proposed to examine the prevalence of gambling activities among SUNY College at Cortland students, motivations for gambling, differences in gambling activities between recreational gamblers and problem gamblers, and the impacts that a commercial casino had on students' gambling. Subjects were 362 college student volunteers, 50.6% male and 49.2% female, 76.2% of whom reported they had gambled at least once during the last school year and 5.6% of whom had gambled weekly or more often. 38.7% of the sample had visited Turning Stone Resort and Casino, the closest casino to the campus. Conclusions included finding that cards/dice/games of chance were the most popular gambling activities, primary motivations were for fun and to win money, male students were more likely to gamble than female students, and no significant difference was found in gambling activities based on undergraduate class, freshman through senior.

Book Using the Theory of Reasoned Action to Examine the Gambling Behaviors of College Athletes and Other Students

Download or read book Using the Theory of Reasoned Action to Examine the Gambling Behaviors of College Athletes and Other Students written by Robert Gene Thrasher and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general purpose of the current study was to examine the gambling behavior of college students and, in particular, college student athletes. Specifically, this study examined the relationships among subjective norms, gambling attitudes, gambling motivations, locus of control, and gambling intentions on the gambling behavior of college students. The goal of this study was to assess gambling in a specific population with easy access to gambling and to evaluate the adequacy of a modified Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) for predicting gambling frequency and gambling behavior. Several studies have used the TRA to examine gambling behavior (Cummings & Corney, 1989; Moore & Ohtsuka, 1997,1999; Oh & Hsu, 2001). AN of these studies have found the TRA to be an effective instrument when examining gambling behavior. However, the researcher chose to modify the IRA in the current study by adding two moderating variables, intrinsic motivation and locus of control, to the conceptual model in order to provide a better conceptual model for future research. The results indicated the addition of the moderating variable in the IRA was appropriate. In the case of intrinsic motivation, both intrinsic motivation to know and intrinsic motivation to accomplish significantly moderated the relationship between gambling attitudes and gambling intentions, predicting 2% of the variance. The current study found that (1) there were differences in gambling attitudes between men and women, (2) attitudes and subjective norms predicted gambling intentions and (3) motivations and locus of control moderated the relationship between gambling attitudes and gambling intentions. These results should be useful to athletic departments and student affairs officers, who are developing strategies to deal with gambling problems on campuses. In addition, the results relative to the revised TRA should be helpful to future researchers in this area. Future research should focus on additional psychological traits such as sensation seeking, aptitude, self-esteem, impulsivity, boredom, venturesomeness, passion, chasing, coping or escape as moderating variables that may influence gambling behavior among student athletes and other students.

Book Problem Gambling in Europe

Download or read book Problem Gambling in Europe written by Gerhard Meyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem Gambling in Europe Challenges, Prevention, and Interventions Edited by Gerhard Meyer, University of Bremen, Germany Tobias Hayer, University of Bremen, Germany Mark Griffiths, Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom As a leisure activity, gambling dates back to ancient times. More recently, the surge in avenues for gambling—casinos, sports betting, lotteries, and remote media (e.g.,Internet, mobile phone, interactive television) among them—finds growing numbers of people losing control over their gambling behaviour, usually at great personal and financial expense. Problem Gambling in Europe is the first book to offer a robust international knowledge base compiled by an interdisciplinary panel of researchers in gambling behaviour. Reports from 21 countries throughout Western, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Europe reveal wide variations in types of wagering activities, participation by populations, social and criminal consequences related to pathological gambling, the extent to which governments acknowledge the problem, and efforts to control it (often with the involvement of the gaming industries). For each country, noted experts discuss: Current legislation regulating gambling. Forms of gambling and their addictive potential. Participation rates and demographics. Prevalence of pathological gambling. National policies to address problem gambling. Prevention strategies and treatment methods. Problem Gambling in Europe brings insight and clarity to a widespread and complex phenomenon, and will be of considerable interest to all parties working to reduce their negative effects: social science researchers in addictions, gambling behaviour, and public health; clinical, social, and health psychologists and psychiatrists; treatment practitioners; the gaming industry; regulators; and policy makers.

Book excerpt: As states have moved from merely tolerating gambling to running their own games, as communities have increasingly turned to gambling for an economic boost, important questions arise. Has the new age of gambling increased the proportion of pathological or problem gamblers in the U.S. population? Where is the threshold between "social betting" and pathology? Is there a real threat to our families, communities, and the larger society? Pathological Gambling explores America's experience of gambling, examining: The diverse and frequently controversial issues surrounding the definition of pathological gambling. Its co-occurrence with disorders such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and depression. Its social characteristics and economic consequences, both good and bad, for communities. The role of video gaming, Internet gambling, and other technologies in the development of gambling problems. Treatment approaches and their effectiveness, from Gambler's Anonymous to cognitive therapy to pharmacology. This book provides the most up-to-date information available on the prevalence of pathological and problem gambling in the United States, including a look at populations that may have a particular vulnerability to gambling: women, adolescents, and minority populations. Its describes the effects of problem gambling on families, friendships, employment, finances, and propensity to crime. How do pathological gamblers perceive and misperceive randomness and chance? What are the causal pathways to pathological gambling? What do genetics, brain imaging, and other studies tell us about the biology of gambling? Is there a bit of sensation-seeking in all of us? Who needs treatment? What do we know about the effectiveness of different policies for dealing with pathological gambling? The book reviews the available facts and frames the intriguing questions yet to be answered. Pathological Gambling will be the odds-on favorite for anyone interested in gambling in America: policymakers, public officials, economics and social researchers, treatment professionals, and concerned gamblers and their families.

Book Gambling Work and Leisure Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Gambling Work and Leisure Routledge Revivals written by David Downes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the legalisation of off-course cash betting in 1960, and the rise of varying forms of gambling, the British have come to be known as a nation of gamblers. Until this study was published in 1976, barely any evidence existed against which to assess the claim that gambling had become a major social problem. The authors present data drawn from area surveys carried out in Swansea, Sheffield, Wanstead and Woodford, and explore how well previous sociological theories of gambling agree with their findings, particular in connection with certain aspects of work and leisure. Examining different forms of gambling, including betting, bingo and gaming machines, the chapters consider how gambling choices vary between different social groups, and how much time and money is spent on them. With the internet making it easier than ever before to place bets, this title is especially relevant, and provides a systematic basis for an explanation of gambling in relation to social structure.
