Book Sanitary Landfill Leachate

Download or read book Sanitary Landfill Leachate written by Syed R. Qasim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE Sanitary landfills are the most widely utilized method of solid waste disposal around the world. With increased use and public awareness of this method of disposal, there is much concern with respect to the pollution potential of the landfill leachate. Depending on the composition and extent of decomposition of the refuse and hydrological factors, the leachate may become highly contaminated. As leachate migrates away from a landfill, it may cause serious pollution to the groundwater aquifer as well as adjacent surface waters. There is growing concern about surface and groundwater pollution from leachate. Better understanding and prediction of leachate generation, containment, and treatment are needed. This book contains a literature review of various methodologies that have been developed for prediction, generation, characterization, containment, control, and treatment of leachate from sanitary landfills. The contents of this book are divided into nine chapters. Each chapter contains theory and definition of the important design parameters, literature review, example calculations, and references. Chapter 1 is devoted to basic facts of solid waste problems current status and future trends towards waste reduction and recycling. Chapter 2 provides a general overview of municipal solid waste generation, collection, transport, resource recovery and reuse, and disposal options. The current status of sanitary landfill design and operation, problems associated with the landfilling, and future trends are presented in Chapter 3. Methods of enhanced stabilization, recycling landfill space, methane recovery, and above grade landfilling, and closure and post closure care of completed landfills are also discussed in detail. Chapter 4 provides a general overview of Subtitle D regulations and its impact upon sanitary landfilling practices. Chapter 5 is devoted entirely to moisture routing and leachate generation mechanisms. Examples of calculation pr

Book US Department of Energy s Methane from Landfills Program

Download or read book US Department of Energy s Methane from Landfills Program written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Methane Recovery from Sanitary Landfills Program is part of the United States Department of Energy's Urban Waste Technology Program (UWT) at Argonne National Laboratory. The overall goals and objectives of the UWT program at ANL are energy savings and recovery from urban waste streams. The near term objective of the Methane Recovery program is encouragement of participation in the development, evaluation, and implementation of the technologies necessary for recovery, processing, and utilization of combustible gases generated in landfills. To achieve these goals, a research program that examines the feasibility of landfill gas recovery and use, as well as future optimization techniques and methods, has been undertaken.

Book Methane from Landfills

Download or read book Methane from Landfills written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recovery and utilization of methane generated in sanitary landfills provides the nation with an opportunity to simultaneously develop an alternative energy source and negate potential hazards. Utilization as a fuel of the combustible gas generated in sanitary landfills has been found to virtually eliminate the twin hazards of explosion and asphyxiation that have long been associated with landfill operations. Estimates place the amount of energy released from landfills in the United States in the form of combustible gases at between one and two quads per year. Using existing technology, 0.2 to 0.4 quads per year of this gas can be economically recovered. Although this is less than 1% of the nation's annual energy consumption, utilization of this alternative energy that would otherwise be lost. This paper first presents a brief description of the recovery, processing, and utilization technology currently operational in the landfill methane recovery field and then describes the current status of the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Landfill Gas Utilization Research and Development Program being developed and managed at ANL.

Book Solid Waste Landfilling

Download or read book Solid Waste Landfilling written by Raffaello Cossu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 1192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid Waste Landfilling: Concepts, Processes, Technology provides information on technologies that promote stabilization and minimize environmental impacts in landfills. As the main challenges in waste management are the reduction and proper treatment of waste and the appropriate use of waste streams, the book satisfies the needs of a modern landfill, covering waste pre-treatment, in situ treatment, long-term behavior, closure, aftercare, environmental impact and sustainability. It is written for practitioners who need specific information on landfill construction and operation, but is also ideal for those concerned about the possible return of these sites to landscapes and their subsequent uses for future generations. - Includes input by international contributors from a vast number of disciplines - Provides worldwide approaches and technologies - Showcases the interdisciplinary nature of the topic - Focuses on sustainability, covering the lifecycle of landfills under the concept of minimizing environmental impact - Presents knowledge of the legal framework and economic aspects of landfilling
