Book Forestry Impacts on Freshwater Habitat of Anadromous Salmonids in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska

Download or read book Forestry Impacts on Freshwater Habitat of Anadromous Salmonids in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska written by Michael L. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[P]resents a science overview of the major forest management issues involved in the recovery of anadromous salmonids affected by timber harvest in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The synthesis reviews salmonid habitat requirements and potential effects of logging, describes the technical foundation of forest practices and restoration, analyzes current federal and non-federal forest practices, and recommends required elements of comprehensive watershed management for recovery of anadromous salmonids"--Note to readers (p. [ii]).

Book Ancient Lakes Biodiversity Ecology and Evolution

Download or read book Ancient Lakes Biodiversity Ecology and Evolution written by Andrew Rossiter and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2000-08-22 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattered over several continents, the ancient lakes of the world have a unique uninterrupted history dating back beyond 100,000 years. Ancient lakes are, in effect, aquatic islands in which a complex of ecology, genetics and evolutionary constraints have shaped in isolation their biotas over hundreds of thousands to millions of years. The diverse faunas achieve some of the highest levels of diversity known to any habitat, offering unique opportunities as 'natural laboratories' for studying the mechanisms of evolution and speciation in situ. This internationally authored volume contains the latest research results and theories to emerge from a diverse range of studies in these lakes. Containing exciting new findings in the ecology, evolution and systematic studies of ancient lake biotas together with many suggested areas for future research, it will be essential reading for all those with a general interest in ecology, evolution and natural history. In this volume expert scientists present the latest results and perspectives from their research on the organisms of the ancient lakes. Diverse in its taxonomic coverage and themes, and international in its authorship and coverage, Ancient Lakes will appeal to all biologists interested in evolution, ecology and biodiversity. Ancient lakes are increasingly recognised as important models of evolution and speciation This volume presents a diverse range of exciting new hypotheses and perspectives on ancient lake biotas Information is included on Russian and Chinese faunas, available in English here for the first time

Book Battle Against Extinction

Download or read book Battle Against Extinction written by W. L. Minckley and published by . This book was released on 1991-12 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 the Green River was poisoned and its native fishes killed so that the new Flaming Gorge Reservoir could be stocked with non-native game fishes for sportsmen. This incident was representative of water management in the West, where dams and other projects have been built to serve human needs without consideration for the effects of water diversion or depletion on the ecosystem. Indeed, it took a Supreme Court decision in 1976 to save Devils Hole pupfish from habitat destruction at the hands of developers. Nearly a third of the native fish fauna of North America lives in the arid West; this book traces their decline toward extinction as a result of human interference and the threat to their genetic diversity posed by decreases in their populations. What can be done to slow or end this tragedy? As the most comprehensive treatment ever attempted on the subject, Battle Against Extinction shows how conservation efforts have been or can be used to reverse these trends. In covering fishes in arid lands west of the Mississippi Valley, the contributors provide a species-by-species appraisal of their status and potential for recovery, bringing together in one volume nearly all of the scattered literature on western fishes to produce a monumental work in conservation biology. They also ponder ethical considerations related to the issue, ask why conservation efforts have not proceeded at a proper pace, and suggest how native fish protection relates to other aspects of biodiversity planetwide. Their insights will allow scientific and public agencies to evaluate future management of these animal populations and will offer additional guidance for those active in water rights and conservation biology. First published in 1991, Battle Against Extinction is now back in print and available as an open-access e-book thanks to the Desert Fishes Council.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, scientists have realized that evolution can occur on timescales much shorter than the 'long lapse of ages' emphasized by Darwin - in fact, evolutionary change is occurring all around us all the time. This work provides an authoritative and accessible introduction to eco-evolutionary dynamics, a cutting-edge new field that seeks to unify evolution and ecology into a common conceptual framework focusing on rapid and dynamic environmental and evolutionary change.

Book Status Report on the Pacific Water Shrew Sorex Bendirii in Canada

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific water shrew, Sorex bendirii, is the largest North American shrew. Its historical range is limited to lowland riparian forests and marshes in western North America. In Canada, the species is restricted to the Fraser lowland of south-western British Columbia. This report reviews the conservation status of this species. It includes information on the shrew's geographic distribution, population size and trends, protection status, habitat, general biology, factors limiting the shrew population size and distribution, and the special significance of the species for Canada. Concludes with discussion of the current consensus regarding the status of the species and a proposed conservation designation.
