Book excerpt: The Bureau of Mines investigated leaching of selected copper sulfide minerals and a composite of impure flotation concentrates at elevated temperatures and pressures with ammoniacal solutions. Copper extractions of 96 percent were obtained by leaching chalcopyrite at 75° C under oxidizing conditions for 60 minutes. An extraction of 99 percent of the copper contained in the composite concentrate was obtained by leaching the product for 90 minutes at 75° C. In tests of bornite, chalcocite, and covellite, 90 to 97 percent of the copper was extracted at 20° C provided an 8-hour reaction period was used. At 75° C essentially complete dissolution of the copper from these three minerals was accomplished in 60 minutes.

Book excerpt: The low-pressure ammonia leaching process adopted by the Anaconda Company for the extraction of base metals from sulphide concentrates was assessed for three different types of local copper concentrates. A specially designed leaching vessel incorporating a flotation mechanism for the proper distribution of gas was used. Copper and zinc recoveries of more that 90 per cent were possible for the sulphide concentrates investigated by the use of a straight leaching procedure at 85 degrees C on material smaller than 325 mesh. The main copper and zinc materials present were chalcopyrite and sphalerite respectively. The rate of agitation is very important. Very low partial pressures of oxygen are required at impeller speeds higher than 900 r/min. A classical flotation procedure proved unsuccessful for the simultaneous recovery of unreacted base metals, together with any precious metals present, from the leach residues into products suitable either for recirculation or cyanidation. Although the simultaneous dissolution of cadmium was high, there were no appreciable losses of precious metals to the leach solutions. The consumption of oxygen depends on the grade of the base metal and the type of iron sulphides present. Fast-batch kinetics were possible for relatively coarse material when a vibration-milling technique was applied to one concentrate for the mechanical 'activation' of the chalcopyrite particles.
