Book Molecular Mechanisms for Repair of DNA

Download or read book Molecular Mechanisms for Repair of DNA written by Philip Hanawalt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An "age" has passed in the 40 years since we first observed recovery from radiation damage in irradiated bacteria. During the early 1930s, we had been discussing the possibility of rapid changes after radiation exposure with Farring ton Daniels, Benjamin Duggar, John Curtis, and others at the University of Wisconsin. After working with living cells, we had concluded that organisms receiving massive insults must have a wide variety of repair mechanisms available for restoration of at least some of the essential properties of the cell. The problem was how to fmd and identify these recovery phenomena. At that time I was working on a problem considered to be of great importance-the existence of the so-called mitogenetic rays. Several hundred articles and a score of books had already appeared dealing with mitogenetic rays, a type of radiation that was thought to exist in the shorter ultraviolet region. Our search for mitogenetic rays necessitated the design of experiments of greatest sensitivity for the detection of ultraviolet. It was vital that conditions be kept as constant as possible during exposure. All the work was done at icewater temperature (3-5°C) during and after exposure. We knew that light was an important factor for cell recovery, so all our experiments were done in dim light, with the plated-out cells being covered with dark cloth. Our statements on the effect of visible light stimulated Kelner to search for "photoreactivation' (as it was later called).

Book Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation

Download or read book Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reevaluates the health risks of ionizing radiation in light of data that have become available since the 1980 report on this subject was published. The data include new, much more reliable dose estimates for the A-bomb survivors, the results of an additional 14 years of follow-up of the survivors for cancer mortality, recent results of follow-up studies of persons irradiated for medical purposes, and results of relevant experiments with laboratory animals and cultured cells. It analyzes the data in terms of risk estimates for specific organs in relation to dose and time after exposure, and compares radiation effects between Japanese and Western populations.

Book Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation

Download or read book Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation written by Committee to Assess Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-03-23 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the seventh in a series of titles from the National Research Council that addresses the effects of exposure to low dose LET (Linear Energy Transfer) ionizing radiation and human health. Updating information previously presented in the 1990 publication, Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation: BEIR V, this book draws upon new data in both epidemiologic and experimental research. Ionizing radiation arises from both natural and man-made sources and at very high doses can produce damaging effects in human tissue that can be evident within days after exposure. However, it is the low-dose exposures that are the focus of this book. So-called “late” effects, such as cancer, are produced many years after the initial exposure. This book is among the first of its kind to include detailed risk estimates for cancer incidence in addition to cancer mortality. BEIR VII offers a full review of the available biological, biophysical, and epidemiological literature since the last BEIR report on the subject and develops the most up-to-date and comprehensive risk estimates for cancer and other health effects from exposure to low-level ionizing radiation.

Book Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

Download or read book Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy written by Simon S. Lo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has emerged as an important innovative treatment for various primary and metastatic cancers. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the physical/technological, biological, and clinical aspects of SBRT. It will serve as a detailed resource for this rapidly developing treatment modality. The organ sites covered include lung, liver, spine, pancreas, prostate, adrenal, head and neck, and female reproductive tract. Retrospective studies and prospective clinical trials on SBRT for various organ sites from around the world are examined, and toxicities and normal tissue constraints are discussed. This book features unique insights from world-renowned experts in SBRT from North America, Asia, and Europe. It will be necessary reading for radiation oncologists, radiation oncology residents and fellows, medical physicists, medical physics residents, medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, and cancer scientists.

Book Radiobiology for the Radiologist

Download or read book Radiobiology for the Radiologist written by Eric J. Hall and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2012-03-28 with total page 908 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In print since 1972, this seventh edition of Radiobiology for the Radiologist is the most extensively revised to date. It consists of two sections, one for those studying or practicing diagnostic radiolo, nuclear medicine and radiation oncology; the other for those engaged in the study or clinical practice of radiation oncology--a new chapter, on radiologic terrorism, is specifically for those in the radiation sciences who would manage exposed individuals in the event of a terrorist event. The 17 chapters in Section I represent a general introduction to radiation biology and a complete, self-contained course especially for residents in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine that follows the Syllabus in Radiation Biology of the RSNA. The 11 chapters in Section II address more in-depth topics in radiation oncology, such as cancer biology, retreatment after radiotherapy, chemotherapeutic agents and hyperthermia. Now in full color, this lavishly illustrated new edition is replete with tables and figures that underscore essential concepts. Each chapter concludes with a "summary of pertinent conclusions" to facilitate quick review and help readers retain important information.
