Book Reclaiming Public Space through Intercultural Dialogue

Download or read book Reclaiming Public Space through Intercultural Dialogue written by Christa Reicher and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2018-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges rapid urbanisation encompasses are manifold, so are the efforts addressing sustainable and inclusive development frameworks. "Reclaiming Public Space through Intercultural Dialogue" is an intercultural and interdisciplinary initiative, which focuses on how social and spatial segregation can be overcome in metropolitan areas. Through joint research and teaching activities in the cities of Dortmund and Amman, three comprehensive topics emerged: urban transformation and the role of public space; social and cultural dimensions of cities; and nature-based planning approaches. The book compiles contributions to these topics from researchers, practitioners, and students, which were presented in an international conference held at the German Jordanian University in Madaba, Jordan, in November 2017.

Book Waste Management and Resource Recovery

Download or read book Waste Management and Resource Recovery written by Charles R. Rhyner and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a basic understanding of waste management problems and issues faced by modern society. Scientific, technical, and environmental principles are emphasized to illustrate the processes of municipal and industrial solid wastes and liquid wastes, and the nature of impacts resulting from waste dispersal and disposal in the environment. Economic, social, legal, and political aspects of waste management are also addressed. Environmental issues and concerns receive thorough coverage in discussing waste reduction, resource recovery, and efficient and practical waste disposal systems. Other specific topics include recycling, physical and chemical processing, the biological treatment of waste solids, incineration, pyrolysis, and energy recover, hazardous wastes, and landfill management. The role of government and other institutions in waste management and resource recovery matters is also detailed. Discussion questions, worked examples, and end-of-chapter problems reinforce important concepts. Waste Management and Resource Recovery is particularly suitable as a text in waste management courses in environmental science or engineering programs. It also works well as a reference for practitioners in the waste management field.

Book Recycling and the Politics of Urban Waste

Download or read book Recycling and the Politics of Urban Waste written by Matthew Gandy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The affluence of western society has given rise to unprecedented quantities of waste, presenting one of the most intractable environmental problems for contemporary society. This book examines recycling and municipal waste management in three major cities: London, New York and Hamburg. A range of political and economic issues are examined to illustrate how any reduction in the size of the waste stream in order to achieve more equitable and environmentally sustainable patterns of resource use is incompatible with the current emphasis in the use of the market for environmental protection. The case studies show how, contrary to the hopes of many environmentalists and policy makers, municipal waste management is moving steadily towards the profitable option of incineration with energy recovery, rather than the recycling of materials or waste reduction at source. The evidence suggests that the achievement of a more sustainable pattern of recycling and waste management policy would demand a fundamental change in public policy, to give government a more active role in environmental protection.

Book Waste Management and the Environment X

Download or read book Waste Management and the Environment X written by J. Casares and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste Management is one of the key problems of modern society due to the ever-expanding volume and complexity of discarded domestic and industrial waste. Society is increasingly aware of the need to establish better practices and safer solutions for waste disposal. This requires further investigation into disposal methods and recycling as well as new technologies to monitor landfills, industrial mining wastes and chemical and nuclear repositories. This creates a need for more research on current disposal methods such as landfills, incineration, chemical and effluent treatment, as well as recycling, clean technologies, waste monitoring, public and corporate awareness and general education. Unfortunately, many of the policies adopted in the past were aimed at short term solutions without due regard to the long term implications on health and the environment, leading in many cases to the need to take difficult and expensive remedial action. The desired direction of Waste Management is towards sustainable strategies. The approach which has emerged as the most promising has been called 4Rs, where reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery are seen as the best actions. This largely decreases the volume of waste that needs final disposal. Recovery refers to the establishment of two new classifications, those of Secondary Raw Materials (SRM) and of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). They both relate to useful products obtained from waste and make a shift from the mere recycle or reuse – mostly seen as a way to reduce dumping – to the valuable employment of such matter within the production cycle. Another aspect of this revolution is happening subtly and gradually by people buying waste; particularly eWaste and some types of plastic, the so-called technical waste. This is happening due to the strong demand and high price of certain new materials and the possibility of sorting out waste in developing regions of the world. As a result, a market in Secondary Raw Materials (SRM) has developed. Covering various areas under the topic of Waste management, this volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Waste Management and the Environment.

Book Sustainable and Economic Waste Management and Resource Recovery Techniques

Download or read book Sustainable and Economic Waste Management and Resource Recovery Techniques written by Hossain Md Anawar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes recent research findings directly related to sustainable and economic waste management and resource recovery techniques. The editors and contributors, all of whom are opinion leaders in the field, review and analyze the current landscape and present solutions to a formidable set of challenges: minimizing the amount of waste materials and environmental contaminants, recovering valuable resources from waste, and disposing of waste by means of sustainable and economic remediation techniques. The contributors also discuss how mining and mineral processing waste products represent one of the world’s greatest chronic waste concerns. They put forward plans for waste reuse, and demonstrate how, given the limited nature of global mineral resources, the recycling and reuse of mining waste materials are vital. In addition, they explain how properly evaluated mining waste can be reused to re-extract minerals, provide fuel for power plants, and supply other valuable materials. Additional themes include research advances that have led to more efficient resource recovery processes, and to economic and sustainable techniques for recovering products from mining waste. Similar to mining waste, the reuse and recycling of municipal, urban, domestic, industrial and agricultural wastes and waste water is also explored. The contributors explain how this waste is essential for the production and recovery of energy, biogas, fertilizers, organic materials, and nutrients (N, P) – and how this type of waste recovery is also critical to environmental safety. The book offers a valuable guide for all individuals who are interested in the development of sustainable recovery processes, reuse of waste, sustainable waste management, and environmental hazard mitigation.
