These cultural practices are symbolically represented by Yemonja, the African female deity who is the mother of the entire world of the Orisha. Also known as Yemaya, Iemanya and Yemaya-Olokun, Yemonja is the deity whose province is the ocean and, given that the Middle Passage was the cultural and spatial crossroad to Africa’s numerous diasporas, this deity links the shared histories of African and African –descent cultural praxis worldwide. Since Yemonja also references sexual, creative, spatial and spiritual energies, the editors and contributors see her as pivotal to this project as an expansive and original cartography of impact of the African feminine divine globally. This work provides the context for understanding how the spiritual conceptualizations of the African feminine divine underpin critical cultural forms, even when it has been previously unacknowledged and despite the cultural encounters with European and Western models of being. The aims of this book are to provide systematic accounts of semantic extensions of sensory adjectives from a cognitive perspective, and to document the validity of an empirical approach, using panchronic and corpus-based methods. This cognitive and usage-based empirical study uncovers cognitive mechanisms underlying linguistic phenomena, since expressions related to perception originally describe the most fundamental human experiences that are frequently utilized for conceptualizing abstract entities, and adjectives especially reflect human construals of situations. This study reveals that each word's meanings extend in a manner peculiarly restricted by its original cognitive characteristics, firmly rooted in everyday bodily experiences, and that this crucially influences its syntactic structures as well. At the same time, it is a ground-breaking demonstration of the power of computerized corpus research.

Although race riots are usually seen as black events in both the United States and South Africa, they have played a significant role in shaping the concept of whiteness and white power in both nations. This emerges clearly from Smith McKoy's examination of four riots that demonstrate the relationship between the two nations and the apartheid practices that have historically defined them: North Carolina's Wilmington Race Riot of 1898; the Soweto Uprising of 1976; the Los Angeles Rebellion in 1992; and the pre-election riot in Mmabatho, Bhoputhatswana in 1994.
