The short articles are a good way to introduce various controversial topics that you can present to those that you know who are generally on the fence or non-supportive of the real issues that are behind Autism, ADHD, Vaccinations, and so on. Knowing that they won't read a whole book, perhaps giving them a short article to read will get them to consider an alternative position.

Book An Angel Kissed by God

Download or read book An Angel Kissed by God written by Judy Ann and published by Autism Recovery. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 6 THE DIAGNOSIS One month before Anthony turned three years of age we finally got a diagnosis. Autism! Anthony was given this diagnosis by displaying the following symptoms: 1. No imaginative or social play. 2. Impaired ability to make friends with peers. 3. Inability to have a conversation with others. 4. Repetitive use of language. 5. Patterns of interest that was abnormal in intensity or focus. 6. Inflexible adherence to specific routines or rituals. 7. Preoccupation with parts of objects. Autism is a social disorder that affects every child differently. I am thankful that Anthony was actually diagnosed as high functioning, which meant there was hope for improvement. Anthony was one and a half to two years delayed in almost everything, was sensory sensitive, and considered hyperactive. In the beginning, he was hearing sensitive and then later became partially deaf. He could not stand certain textures on his body or to touch. It was sometimes difficult to keep clothes on him; he pulled his clothing off several times a day. He was orally sensitive to the texture of foods and would not eat very many varieties. He would first smell the food, and then touch it with his tongue before it ever entered his mouth. He could not eat a lot of food because of its texture. He only ate a few basic things; including anything with cheese. To this date has to have ranch dressing and or ketchup with any food he eats. He has never liked or ate snacks like Twinkies, cupcakes, pastries, cake, or cookies. He only likes plain chocolate candy, no taffy or anything chewy or with nuts and he can't tolerate gum in his mouth. Anthony loves chocolate ice cream with lots of chocolate syrup, but will not eat whip cream on top. The first feelings I experienced once we received the diagnosis were mixed. I had already pretty much diagnosed him myself by then. OK God, now I know what it's called, but what do I do about it? How do I help him to just be able to cope and make it through one day? I began to read every book I could get my hands on. I thanked God that my child was not as severe as some of the ones I had read about. Some of the books were both scary and depressing. Some of the children I read about ended up being sent to hospitals or special homes because it was too difficult for their families to care for them at home. When my older children and other family members were told of Anthony's diagnosis, it was not really a surprise to anyone. My family and older children have always been supportive in every way they could, and have always tried to help with Anthony and believed the best for him. The following week I attended a singles group meeting. This was just where God wanted me to be at this particular time. Have you ever felt desperate and you went to a church service and it was totally meant for God to minister to you and your problem? God knew exactly where I was and He met me there. I entered that room that night quite overwhelmed and discouraged. I needed something from God. I was a single mother trying to face all of this alone. There is no known cure for Autism and the doctors don't even know what causes it or prevents it. As I sat there and listened to the minister God spoke to my heart. This minister was telling a story that had taken place some years ago. His son had been in the hospital very ill. Although he was only an infant he was struggling just to stay alive. They were given a diagnosis and told what to expect. This man turned to God on behalf of his son. He put his total faith in God and then reminded God, what His Word says. I Peter 2:24 says "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we dead to sins should live to righteousness by whose stripes we were healed". (KJV) Anything less than a perfectly normal child was unacceptable to him. Those words stuck in my mind through the difficult and hard years to come. At that moment I also c

This book was released on 2008-04-29 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive program that targets all four of the 4-A epidemics: autism, ADHD, asthma, and allergies “An easy-to-read commonsense guide to beneficial biomedical treatments.”—Temple Grandin Doctors have generally overlooked the connections among the 4-A disorders. For years the medical establishment has considered autism medically untreatable and utterly incurable, and has limited ADHD treatment mainly to symptom suppression. Dr. Kenneth Bock, a leading medical innovator, along with his colleagues, have discovered a solution that goes to the root of the problem. They have found that modern toxins, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, genetic vulnerabilities, and assaults on the immune and gastrointestinal systems trigger most of the symptoms of the 4-A disorders, resulting in frequent misdiagnosis and untold mysteries. Dr. Bock’s remarkable Healing Program is an innovative biomedical approach that has changed the lives of more than a thousand children. Drawn from medical research and based on years of clinical success, this program offers a safe, sensible solution that is individualized to each child to help remedy the root causes. Dr. Bock also shares the dramatic true stories of parents and children that will inspire you to change the life of your own child. Hope is at last within reach.

Download or read book Autism written by J.D. Rockefeller and published by J.D. Rockefeller. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is defined as neuro-developmental disorder that is characterized by repetitive and restricted behavior, verbal and non-verbal communication and impaired social interaction. Signs are normally noted during the first two years of their children being born. Signs normally develop gradually over time, though certain children with autism may reach their developmental achievements at normal pace and regress. The entire diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become evident during early childhood, normally within the first three years of birth.Although autism is a highly heritable condition, research studies indicate genetic and environmental factors to be the main causes. In certain cases, although rare, autism is largely associated with elements that cause birth defects. There is a lot of controversy that surrounds different other suggested environmental causes, for instance, the hypotheses on vaccine have been unproven. Autism has an effect on the way in which the brain processes information by changing the manner nerve cells and synapses organize and connect; how this happens is not really understood. It's among the three disorders of the autism spectrum, with the other two being Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). Asperger syndrome defines a delay in language and cognitive development and PDD is not really specified but diagnosed when a complete set of criteria for Asperger syndrome or autism are not met. Behavioral interventions or early speech can enable children with autism to gain self-care, communication, and social skills. While there isn't a known cure for the condition, there have been some reported cases about children who've recovered. A few children with autism get to live independently after they reach adulthood, although some go on to become successful. In recent times, a new autistic culture has become advent, with some people searching for a cure and some believing that the condition should be accepted and not treated like a disorder. Based on data from 2010, the number of people with autism was estimated to be about 1-2 for every 1,000 people globally. The condition is also 4-5 times more likely to develop among boys than girls. An estimated 1.7 percent of children in the U.S. are diagnosed with the condition, and as of 2014 there had been a 30 percent increase from 1 in 88 in 2012. Autism among adults in the United Kingdom is 1.1 percent. The number of new cases has increased dramatically from the 1980s, largely because of changes in government-subsidized financial incentives and diagnostic practice for named diagnoses, but the question of whether the actual rates have risen remains unresolved.

Book Lessons from a Complex Child

Download or read book Lessons from a Complex Child written by Ellen Woodbriar and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At twenty-nine months, my son Jackson had met all of his developmental milestones. He spoke in full sentences, knew his ABCs and colors, had well-developed fine and gross motor skills, was affectionate, had perfect eye contact, loved to talk, and was extremely social. Six months later, just after Jackson’s third birthday, neurologists couldn’t rule out that he might have a malignant form of epilepsy, some form of neurodegenerative disorder, have regressive encephalopathy, be autistic, or have a pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). What could possibly have caused the regression he experienced over a four-month period, the irritability he was exhibiting, the sixty to eighty seizures he was enduring each day, and the autistic-like behaviors he had developed? Although I’m not a physician and don’t work in the healthcare profession, I have lived through the regression and recovery of my own child. This experience has led me to form the opinion that, potentially, too many children are being put on the autism spectrum. Some children, like Jackson, with ASD-like symptoms are not autistic and therefore are not receiving the full breadth of intervention that could potentially help them recover. Do I have proof of this? No, because from my experience, and up until this point, there has not been enough research that the medical profession recognizes as reliable made available to the public or to parents like me to identify the root cause of some symptoms. The purpose of my telling this story is not to give anyone, or any family, false hope but, with good reason, to encourage you to leave no stone unturned in treating a medically complex child. It takes passionate determination and tenacity to find underlying and seemingly hidden causes of complex illnesses and to see the journey through to recovery when possible.

Download or read book Neurodiversity written by Thomas Armstrong and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2010-05-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new term has emerged from the disability movement in the past decade to help change the way we think about neurological disorders: Neurodiversity. ADHD. Dyslexia. Autism. The number of categories of illnesses listed by the American Psychiatric Association has tripled in the past fifty years. With so many people affected by our growing -- culture of disabilities, -- it no longer makes sense to hold on to the deficit-ridden idea of neuropsychological illness. With the sensibility of Oliver Sacks and Kay Redfield Jamison, psychologist Thomas Armstrong offers a revolutionary perspective that reframes many neuropsychological disorders as part of the natural diversity of the human brain rather than as definitive illnesses. Neurodiversity emphasizes their positive dimensions, showing how people with ADHD, bipolar disorder, and other conditions have inherent evolutionary advantages that, matched with the appropriate environment or ecological niche, can help them achieve dignity and wholeness in their lives.

Download or read book The Life Recovery Method written by Robert Cox and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest research on autism and the brain is indicating that it affects the brain in much the same way as complex trauma. What does this mean for the delivery of behavioral and social services? If the brain is affected in the same ways as trauma what does this mean for educational, vocational, and developmental goals in the individual's life? How do we progress with treatment based on the research of the last six years? In this ground-breaking book, Robert looks at the research, how the brain reacts to both trauma and autism and what this means in the real world for treatment. Using case examples and his own observation Robert has laid out a method and direction for treatment that is making a profound difference in the lives of the individuals he supports every day. From families to schools to employment and individual struggles, Robert shares the methods that can bring lasting change to lives and often reduce or remove the necessity for expensive behavioral services. Learn why children are going into meltdown mode for seemingly no reason in seconds and how to slow that reactive process. Helping the individual to feel safe in a constantly assaultive and traumatic world can, and does, make all the difference. Parents, caregivers, educators, and individuals will find strength and hope in this book. Finally, a clear direction for the implementation of services that will make all the difference in the lives of those struggling with life on the autism spectrum. "The first time I sat down next to Robert during a clinical staffing meeting I thought who in the world is this man? He didn't look up, just kept working on his iPad. About 10 minutes in he looked up, took advantage of a lull in the conversation and proceeded to educate all of us on this child that he had only met once. Robert has a unique ability to assess behavior and environments in a matter of seconds or minutes. And to then provide a list of real treatment ideas that are simple and highly effective. I have worked with Robert on my most difficult cases and been consistently impressed by the simplicity of his ideas and amazed by his incredible knowledge. Robert is a fierce advocate and has walked alongside many families to help them find hope and progress in very challenging situations. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to learn from and work with such a gifted clinician and scholar. I look forward to the inspiration he will share throughout this book. Parents and professionals alike will leave this book with hope, purpose and confidence." -- Lori Wheelhouse, MA, LCPC, Clinical Director, KVC Prairie Ridge Children's Hospital "One-third of the individuals served by Special Needs Services of Ray County have a diagnosis of autism. Many of those individuals have experienced a trauma that reemerges in episodes of self-harm, depression, harm to others, and isolation. Mr. Cox has taught Mindfulness Training to individuals with autism that has allowed these individuals to move their thoughts past the trauma. I credit Mr. Cox with encouraging individuals to focus on what their life can become. Individuals are now making eye contact with others and speaking for themselves. They are working alongside their neighbors in competitive jobs. Many have left their natural homes and are learning how to live with supports in their community. Without the assessment and on-going therapy provided by Mr. Cox, our agency would still be responding to 911 calls and attempting to console desperate caregivers." - Suzan Breen, Executive Director, Special Needs Services of Ray County
