Book The League of Nations International Terrorism and British Foreign Policy 1934 1938

Download or read book The League of Nations International Terrorism and British Foreign Policy 1934 1938 written by Michael D. Callahan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the League of Nations, state-supported terrorism, and British foreign policy after the rise of Hitler in the 1930s. It argues that with strong leadership from Britain and France, the League made it possible for states to preserve the peace of Europe after terrorists aided by Italy and Hungary killed the King of Yugoslavia in 1934. This achievement represents the League at its most effective and demonstrates that the organization could carry out its peacekeeping functions. The League also made it possible to draft two international conventions to suppress and punish acts of terrorism. While both conventions were examples of productive collaboration, in the end, few governments supported the League’s anti-terrorism project in itself. Still, for Britain, Geneva served the cause of peace by helping states to settle their differences by mediation and concession while promoting international cooperation, a central conviction of British “appeasement” policy in the 1930s.

Book excerpt: The study is a historical analysis of Soviet disarmament policy from 1922, when Moscow first began to show serious interest in disarmament, to 1931, when arrangements for the Disarmament Conference were completed. In order to present the subject in the historical context of the period, certain information was included on other aspects of Soviet foreign policy, domestic developments in the USSR, and the attitudes of other major powers toward disarament, security, and related problems. Soviet policy is summarized and the author's conclusions are set forth at the end of the narrative. Texts of key Soviet papers and a bibliography are included.

Book Revolutions in International Law

Download or read book Revolutions in International Law written by Kathryn Greenman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1917, the October Revolution and the adoption of the revolutionary Mexican Constitution shook the foundations of the international order in profound, unprecedented and lasting ways. These events posed fundamental challenges to international law, unsettling foundational concepts of property, statehood and non-intervention, and indeed the very nature of law itself. This collection asks what we might learn about international law from analysing how its various sub-fields have remembered, forgotten, imagined, incorporated, rejected or sought to manage the revolutions of 1917. It shows that those revolutions had wide-ranging repercussions for the development of laws relating to the use of force, intervention, human rights, investment, alien protection and state responsibility, and for the global economy subsequently enabled by international law and overseen by international institutions. The varied legacies of 1917 play an ongoing role in shaping political struggle in the form of international law.

Book Looking Backward Moving Forward

Download or read book Looking Backward Moving Forward written by Richard G. Hovannisian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades separating our new century from the Armenian Genocide, the prototype of modern-day nation-killings, have fundamentally changed the political composition of the region. Virtually no Armenians remain on their historic territories in what is today eastern Turkey. The Armenian people have been scattered about the world. And a small independent republic has come to replace the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was all that was left of the homeland as the result of Turkish invasion and Bolshevik collusion in 1920. One element has remained constant. Notwithstanding the eloquent, compelling evidence housed in the United States National Archives and repositories around the world, successive Turkish governments have denied that the predecessor Young Turk regime committed genocide, and, like the Nazis who followed their example, sought aggressively to deflect blame by accusing the victims themselves. This volume argues that the time has come for Turkey to reassess the propriety of its approach, and to begin the process that will allow it move into a post-genocide era. The work includes "Genocide: An Agenda for Action," Gijs M. de Vries; "Determinants of the Armenian Genocide," Donald Bloxham; "Looking Backward and Forward," Joyce Apsel; "The United States Response to the Armenian Genocide," Simon Payaslian; "The League of Nations and the Reclamation of Armenian Genocide Survivors," Vahram L. Book Dismantling the League of Nations

Download or read book Dismantling the League of Nations written by Jane Mumby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The League of Nations, one of the world's first multi-function intergovernmental organisations, was also one of the first to undergo liquidation. This book unveils the last chapter in its story, showing how complex and time-consuming the end of this 'great experiment' truly was. Starting with the signing of the Charter of the United Nations in 1945 - the death knell of the League - Mumby traces the closure process that followed. From the final meeting of the Assembly in April 1946, the transfer of assets and functions to the UN, the liquidation of the Secretariat, and the last acts of business through 1948, this book follows the story through the eyes of those who made it happen. It demonstrates why this process took longer than expected, highlights the importance of human agency in even the most bureaucratic of institutions, and points to the lingering impact of the League on international organisations today. Uncovering both the institutional and personal aspects of the League of Nations' final chapter, this book furthers our understanding of this famous institution, shedding light on those that continue to dominate contemporary international relations, and exposing the unavoidable complexity of dismantling an intergovernmental organisation.
