They record all the formal business of the town, such as town meetings, elections, laying out of roads, and land grants by the town; vital records were kept in separate books and are not included here. These records begin early in the life of the town and continue down through the end of the American Revolution. They provide a quite detailed picture of life at the time. Here you will find the local residents registering their cattle marks, being elected hog-reeve, or to some other minor town post, receiving permission to set up fishing stages or erect a fence, listed as voting at the town meeting, receiving a grant of land or cattle, assisting in the care of widows and orphans, having a road laid out past their property, and all manner of other interesting things. These records can be very helpful because they name a great many people, some of whom probably do not show up in many other records. There is a complete index in each volume.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Town of Plymouth, Vol. 2: Published by Order of the Town; 1705 to 1743 John I)yev served from March 2d, 1723-4, until March 3d, 1739-40, with the exception of the year beginning March 1, 1732-3, during which the office of clerk was held by Gershom Foster. Mr. Dyer, boru iu 1671, was probably the sou of Johu Dyer of Weymouth. He came to Plymouth in 1698, and in that year bought of William Bradford, the son of Governor Bradford, the lot of land on the southeasterly side of Leyden Street, on which the house with a brick end stands opposite the Universalist Church. The lot is described iu the deed as running on the street northeasterly " as far as the northeasterly corner of the old store house which formerly stood on the lot." By this deed the precise location is defined of probably one of the earliest structures of tho Colony. Mr. Dyer taught school iu Plymouth during a few months in the year 1700, and became a prominent and valuable eilizen. He was a member of the board of selectmen from 1709 to 1734 inclusive, town treasurer from 1701 to 1732, and occasionally served as moderator at town meetings. Gershom Foster was chosen clerk March 1, 1732-3, and served one year, lie was the sou of Johu and Hannah (Stetson) Foster, and was boru in 1709. At the age of twenty-four he was chosen clerk, and at the same time served as town treasurer. Kdward Winslow was chosen town clerk March 3, 1739-40, aud held office until .January, 1741-2. He was subsequently a member of the board of selectmen from 1757 to 1765 inclusive, towu treasurer in 1760, ami occasionally a moderator. He was a son of Isaac, grandson of Josiab, and great graudsou of Edward Winslow, of the Mayflower. General John Winslow was his brother. Before the revolution he held the office of collector of Plymouth, register of wills, and clerk of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Town of Plymouth, Vol. 1: Published by Order of the Town; 1636 to 1705 At the annual meeting of the Town of Plymouth held on the seventh of March, 1887, it was voted, on motion of Arthur Lord, "that a committee of three be appointed by the Moderator to consider the expediency of printing and publishing the whole, or any part, of the Town Records as a part of the history of the Town, and report at the adjourned meeting, with an estimate of the expense." The committee, consisting of Arthur Lord, Charles G. Davis, and William W. Brewster, presented at the adjourned meeting, held on the 4th of April, the following report: "The committee appointed under Article 16 of the warrant relating to the printing and publishing of the Town Records as a part of the history of the town, submit the following report: The records of the proceedings of the town, from the date of the earliest record to the year 1828 are contained in four volumes, which are numbered and dated as follows: Vol. 1, 1660; vol. 2, 1660 to 1710; vol. 3, 1716 to 1795; vol. 4, 1795 to 1828. The dates above given do not accurately cover the periods included in the several volumes. These volumes contain the record of all the formal action of the town, which it would be expedient, in the opinion of the committee, for the town to publish.
