Book excerpt: Grounded in social research, Rural Ministry evaluates the diminishing establishment of the church in rural America, which is linked to the fifty-year-old crisis in rural ministry. It names the primary issues for leaders of Protestant and Catholic churches to ponder: the graying of the population; the closing of schools, hospitals, and factories; and the corporate buyout of farms during the 1980s. In addition to retelling the history of this crisis, Shannon Jung and the other contributors to this volume offer a set of Christian principles that respond to social problems in rural life. The situation is so intense that the book offers examples from around the heartland of cooperative or collaborative parishes that blend denominational and theological differences across the Protestant and Catholic spectrum. Key Benefits: Offers a vision of nationwide renewal in rural America; Advocates true ecumenical solutions to issues confronting the rural church in America; Sidebars feature examples and illustrations; Informs new rural ministers of the culture and issues about to confront them, allowing them to better handle the challenges and opportunities of the rural environment; Motivates congregations to activate ministries in new and provocative ways, insuring the spread of the gospel; Can help troubled churches survive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As rural America continues to undergo massive economic and demographic shifts, rural churches are uniquely positioned to provide community leadership. Leading a rural congregation requires a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing these communities, as well as a strong theological and community-focused identity. Allen T. Stanton describes how in establishing this identity, rural leaders build a meaningful and vital ministry. Reclaiming Rural explores the myths and realities of rural places, and how those common narratives impact the leadership of rural churches. Ultimately, rural congregations must practice a contextual understanding of vitality, which understands both the strengths and challenges of leading in a rural setting. Arguing for a practice of evangelism imbued with this mission of vitality, Reclaiming Rural promotes the church as a leader in economic and community development, modeled upon a Wesleyan theology of grace. Acknowledging the many challenges facing rural churches, this book is an energetic and encouraging guide to overcoming social and economic obstacles to build a thriving congregation.

Book excerpt: Winner of Christianity Today's Award of Merit for The Church/Pastoral Leadership 2018 Whether it’s because of the 2016 Presidential election or books like “Hillbilly Elegy,” Americans are beginning to understand the tremendous influence people in rural areas have in our nation. But rural America—not urban America—is also the new center of poverty. Thus, the rural church stands at the crossroads of strength and struggle. It carries the gospel, the very hope and power needed. Yet its ministry efforts are hamstrung because urban and suburban churches often don’t realize their need for rural churches, and the rural church itself rarely understands its unique assets and values. The Forgotten Church addresses these problems and: provides an overview of rural ministry explores opportunities recent trends provide showcases the remarkable benefits of suburban, urban, and rural churches working together This book is essential for any pastor—whether from the city or the sticks—because we are one body and we need each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V THE RURAL CHURCH SERVING A COMMUNITY The subject of this chapter refers to the church in the rural community, or it may imply the task of the country church in creating a community where there is none, or the task of giving Christian leadership to a community already socially conscious, but in danger, as in some cases, of becoming pagan unless the church fulfills its function. Why are we focusing our attention to-day upon the rural life of the nation? Because it includes not only over one half (fifty-three per cent) of the population of this country, but it also represents the great resource field of the nation's wealth. It is here also we discover such splendid heroic individuality as has produced the largest percentage of moral, religious, industrial, and political leadership of all the ages; and yet at the same time we discover national waste of resources--natural, human, and spiritual--because here we find the least of community interest and cooperation. Why are we discussing so often in these days the problems of the country church? Because in many sections of our country it presents to us one of the most difficult mission fields of the world to cultivate, for the reason that, like the slums of the great cities, it is a lost home field. As one goes back to his home county in the rural sections of the Eastern, Southern, and some of the Middle Western States, what does he discover? The splendid old circuit system broken up and the fires of religious fervor gone out upon many an abandoned church and family altar, while the message of the minister in the neglected pulpit of the dilapidated church building is about as effective in creating a community spirit as the noise of a lone woodpecker on a dead tree in a swamp. Why is...

Download or read book Dream with Me written by John M. Perkins and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to recent surveys and studies, race relations in the United States are the worst they've been since the 1990s, and many would argue that life for most minorities has not significantly improved since the civil rights era of the 1960s. For so many, the dream of true equality has dissolved into a reality of prejudice, fear, and violence as a way of life. John M. Perkins has been there from the beginning. Raised by his sharecropping grandparents, Perkins fled Mississippi in 1947 after his brother was fatally shot by a police officer. He led voter registration efforts in 1964, worked for school desegregation in 1967, and was imprisoned and tortured in 1970. Through it all, he has remained determined to seek justice and reconciliation based in Christ's redemptive work. "Justice is something that every generation has to strive for," he says. And despite the setbacks of recent years, Perkins finds hope in the young people he has met all across the nation who are hard at work, bringing about reconciliation in God's name and offering acceptance to all. Dream with Me is his look back at a life devoted to seeking justice for all God's people, as well as a look forward to what he sees as a potentially historic breakthrough for people of every race.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extended essay on rural ministry reflects on its long evolution, its current challenges, and its continuing viability for the future in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Tui (Parson Bird), with its tuft of white feathers at the neck, is highly adaptive, has a distinctive call, is protective of its domain, is an imitator of song and speech and is an enduring example of survival and adaptability.Bennett highlights some key issues and opportunities for rural ministry today, including:* Maintaining identity as a rural community and church* Being forums for wider community discussion on current issues* Re-vitalising the church's ministry of hospitality* Ensuring those responsible for worship leadership are well-trained* Ensuring that worship gives expression to what is actually happening in the rural community* Developing strategies for on-farm, at-home visits or sub-regional get-togethers* Offering theological college students short residential stays to help them understand time-work-seasonality relationships, and how rural people view life and society.------------Praise for When the Tui Calls"The work you have in your hands is an invaluable insight into the roles that faith and Christian ministry offer to rural life, born not only out of Bill's experience, but also with the depth of the history of the life of the Church in word and sacrament. Bill provides the Church today with a pathway back into our history that will help us to identify the roots of our ministry in rural life that enables us to navigate our present and near future." From the Foreword, by Bishop Andrew Hedge"Described as an "essay", this 65-page book provides an informal and readable introduction to rural ministry. Parts one and two cover the historical origins in Roman and Celtic religion, embedded within parish and monastic structures, moving through the Reformation and Evangelical revivals, from a post-medieval to the 18th-century industrial, to the urban world. The story comes to New Zealand in the third part, "Clash of Cultures", which covers the missionary and settler activities of Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and Catholic developments. This section concludes with the treatment of Maori Missions and Pastorates and with the independent Maori ministries in partnership models which emerged later in the 20th-century.In Part Four, "Changing Patterns of Rural Ministry in the 20th- and 21st-Centuries", the subheadings highlight the interplay of religious and secular conflicts and compromises that have been central to the story of rural ministry from the beginning. They include, "Rural Prosperity and Adversity", "Affirming the distinctiveness of a rural ministry theology", "Minita-a-iwi", "The Impact of Political and Economic Changes", "Rural Religion and Politics", "Local Shared Ministry" and "The Near Landscape and Beyond".Bill Bennett is the ideal writer of this book. As an Anglican Pakeha minister he has been a major mover and shaker in the development of a rural ministry theology and praxis in Aotearoa New Zealand. Much of his ministry has been in rural parishes in the Diocese of Waiapu as well as in Norwich and Lichfield Dioceses in England. His publications of prayers and hymns (both lyrics and music) are a taonga for ecumenical and bicultural worship services.I strongly recommend this book for ministry formation, seminary and pastoral theology libraries and as a resource for lay and ordained ministers throughout New Zealand."Review by John Thornley for Tui Motu Inter Islands Magazine. Issue 219, September 2017
