This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of Living Officers of the United States Army The object of this book is to bring together within the compass of a single volume the records of the officers of the army now living. It differs from any existing book containing officers' records in that it embraces all living officers, whether graduates of the Military Academy, or appointees from the ranks, or from civil life; and also in being complete in one volume. The original intention of the publishers was to have the records as full and explicit as to all the details of the services of the officers represented as it was possible to make them, with due regard to the space available. This of course involved co-operation on the part of the officers themselves, and to that cud the publishers made earnest effort, by means of circulars and advertisements, to secure from every officer in the army the facts of his record as he wished it presented. Many officers responded, but many did not, and what the book lacks in respect of fullness as to details is attributable to this failure on the part of a largo number of officers to respond to the often repeated solicitation of the publishers. The thanks of the publishers arc due to Colonel Guy V. Henry, U.S.A., for voluntarily placing at their service his valuable book of "Civilian Appointments," and to Captain Geo. F. Price, 5th Cavalry, for similarly giving them the use of his interesting work, "Across the Continent with the Fifth Cavalry," both of which have been freely availed of. They also tender their thanks to General Horatio G. Wright, chief of engineers, and to General Godfrey Weitzel, of the same corps, General S. B. Holabird, quartermaster-general, General Stephen V. Benet, chief of ordnance, Colonel M. I. Ludington, Major W. B. Hughes, and Captain John L. Clem, of the quartermaster's department, Colonel S. C. Lyford, of the ordnance, and to Colonel John B. Nicholson, recorder of the grand commandery of the military order of the Loyal Legion, for favors and assistance received. They also desire to make acknowledgment for assistance derived from the use of Major Wilhelm's "Military and Naval Encyclopaedia." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Army Life: A Private's Reminiscences of the Civil War Many volumes have been published in regard to the late Civil War in America. By these the nation is made familiar with the movements of our armies, and the results of those great military campaigns. These volumes have been written by civilians and officers of high rank, and consequently the story of the private soldier's life has never been told. That life was made up of events and surrounded by circum stances of the most interesting character. Not interesting to the soldier alone, but of interest to his friends, and all who enjoy the fruits of victory purchased by his sacrifices and patriotism. It was to supply, to a limited extent, this want so universally felt that the writer consented to furnish The Sketches of Army Life for the Republican Journal, of Belfast, Maine. The officers had spoken, but this was a voice from the ranks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Sketch of the Life of General Nathan Towson United States Army Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of the Life of General Nathan Towson, United States Army Raised beneath the roof of a Maryland Farmer, he has throughout life given evidences of those kind sensibilities, which adorn a military commander. As a brave and skillful officer, and polite gentleman, the American army has few equals and no superior. A perusal of the following pages cannot fail to produce a conviction that Towson's Light House decided the fate of many a hard fought battle and though fortune has, for a while deprived him of his just reward, yet time will do him justice and the name of Towson will go down to posterity, as one of the unpretending great men of our country. Book Notices of the Biographical Register of the Officers and Graduates of the U S Military Academy at West Point

This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notices of the Biographical Register of the Officers and Graduates of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point: From Its Establishment, March 16, 1802, to the Army Reorganization of 1866-67 I also observe that you meet an objection by some people m the early part of our civil war, when the minds of all were aroused, excited, and apt to run astray. None of us contend that because we graduated at West Point, we are the less men, with all the passions and weaknesses of other men, liable to err, and even to crime; but the facts and figures given by you are conclusive on this point, that in the great heaving cause that shook our national fabric, 3. Less proportion of our graduates were blinded and misled than of Senators and Representatives in Congress, of Judges of the Supreme Court, or of the colleges located in the most rigidly patriotic spots of our country Yale and Harvard. I do not think we claim that West Point can in four years accomplish miracles and utterly remould the character of its pupils, but it has in the past and will make in the future, men more useful in the details of life, more reliable and faithful to their trusts, whether private or public, and more national in their attributes and aspirations, than any other system of education hitherto tried; and these results are cheaply attained by our national Military Academy. While there is such unlimited freedom to the expression Of public opinion as in our country, we must expect the widest criticism and the wildest views but my observa tion convinces me that at no former period of our history was the Academy more firmly rooted in the respect and good opinion of our people than now, and I have no fears but that it will always receive the generous and fostering care of the Government. In the course of my service I have been thrown most intimately with volunteer officers who had not received the advantage of the West Point course but all, without exception, regretted that they had not enjoyed, in early life, the minute and systematic instruction in the elements of the military profession, which they realized were better taught at West Point than at any other institution of our country. Instead of learning the same things with the aid of books, they had to learn them in camp, sometimes at the expense of valuable lives. Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.
