Book Religion Reform and Modernity in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Religion Reform and Modernity in the Eighteenth Century written by Robert G. Ingram and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new interpretation of English history and religion in the eighteenth century. The eighteenth century has long divided critical opinion. Some contend that it witnessed the birth of the modern world, while others counter that England remained an ancien regime confessional state. This book takes issue with both positions, arguing that the former overstate the newness of the age and largely misdiagnose the causes of change, while the latter rightly point to the persistence of more traditional modes of thought and behaviour, but downplay the era's fundamental uncertainty and misplace the reasons for and the timeline of its passage. The overwhelming catalyst for change is here seen to be war, rather than long-term social and economic changes. Archbishop Thomas Secker [1693-1768], the Cranmer or Laud of his age, and the hitherto neglected church reforms he spearheaded, form the particular focus of the book; this is the first full archivally-based study of a crucial but frequently ignored figure. ROBERT G. INGRAM is Assistant Professor at the Department of History, Ohio University.

Book Records of Convocation Canterbury 1313 1377

Download or read book Records of Convocation Canterbury 1313 1377 written by Gerald Lewis Bray and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2005 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The convocation records of the Churches of England and Ireland are the principal source of our information about the administration of those churches from middle ages until modern times. They contain the minutes of clergy synods, the legislation passed by them, tax assessments imposed by the king on the clergy, and accounts of the great debates about religious reformation; they also include records of heresy trials in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, many of them connected with the spread of Lollardy. However, they have never before been edited or published in full, and their publication as a complete set of documents provides a valuable resource for scholarship. This volume contains all the evidence for convocations and provincial councils during the reigns of Edward II and Edward III, and reconstructs the period from 1328 to 1349, for which the Canterbury registers have been lost. Particularly important is the detailed account of the convocations held in 1340-2, when the clergy first withdrew from parliament and insisted on taxing themselves. There is also an appendix listing all the known clerical proctors sent to parliament from 1295 to 1536.

Book The Anglican Episcopate 1689 1801

Download or read book The Anglican Episcopate 1689 1801 written by Nigel Aston and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century bishops of the Church of England and its sister communions had immense status and authority in both secular society and the Church. They fully merit fresh examination in the light of recent scholarship, and in this volume leading experts offer a comprehensive survey and assessment of all things episcopal between the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688 and the early nineteenth-century. These were centuries when the Anglican Church enjoyed exclusive establishment privileges across the British Isles (apart from Scotland). The essays collected here consider the appointment and promotion of bishops, as well as their duties towards the monarch and in Parliament. All were expected to display administrative skills, some were scholarly, others were interested in the fine arts, most had wives and families. All of these themes are discussed, and Wales, Ireland, Scotland and the American colonies receive specific examination.

This volume contains the acts of convocation during the reigns of Richard II and Henry IV, extensively reconstructed from the archbishops' registers [which are in disorder for much of this period] and other sources. The texts enable us to chart the evolution of the convocations to the point where they became virtually synonymous with provincial councils, and show how they dealt with the challenge posed by John Wycliffe and the early Lollard

Jacob's edition of Chichele's register, but it has been completely re-ordered and supplemented by other material, to give a much fuller picture of how the institution worked at a time when it was deeply involved in English political lif

Most of this material has never been published before, and the collection of different sources enables us to see how both Edward IV and Henry VII modernized the institution along the lines of their other administrative reforms.
