Download or read book Birth Marriage and Death Records written by David Annal and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birth, marriage and death records are an essential resource for family historians, and this handbook is an authoritative introduction to them. It explains the original motives for registering these milestones in individual lives, describes how these record-keeping systems evolved, and shows how they can be explored and interpreted. Authors David Annal and Audrey Collins guide researchers through the difficulties they may encounter in understanding the documentation. They recount the history of parish registers from their origin in Tudor times, they look at how civil registration was organized in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and explain how the system in England and Wales differs from those in Scotland and Ireland. The record-keeping practiced by nonconformist and foreign churches, in communities overseas and in the military is also explained, as are the systems of the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Other useful sources of evidence for births, marriages and deaths are explored and, of course, the authors assess the online sites that researchers can turn to for help in this crucial area of family history research.

Download or read book Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1790 written by John Blair Linn and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1976 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the laws agreed upon in England for the governing of the Province of Pennsylvania was one providing for a registry of marriages, births, and deaths. Marriage licenses were issued from the Office of the Provincial Secretary, those listed in this work dating from 1742. Some earlier registers of licenses and some kept at a later date are missing, yet this work still features a base list of 6,500 marriages, to which we have added a further 3,500 marriages from articles in the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography and The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. All 10,000 marriages are based on public records as opposed to church records.

Download or read book Dictionary of Dublin Dissent written by Steven C. Ffeary-Smyrl and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The religious radicalism of the Cromwellian period encouraged numerous Protestant dissenting sects to establish themselves for the first time in Dublin. Conviction, tenacity and skill (with occasional politic conformity) enabled many of these dissenting congregations to survive and flourish through the succeeding centuries. By carefully reconstructing the richly varied congregational histories of Dublin's Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Quakers, Congregationalists, Lutherans, Moravians, Huguenots, and others, Steven Smyrl vividly illuminates this important but often underestimated aspect of life in Ireland's capital. A major part of the book is the unique listing of the surviving records of each congregation, the extent of which will surprise academics and genealogists alike" -- Publisher's description.
