This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Reports Number of the Wellesley College Bulletin, Vol. 39: September, 1949 Of Aristophanes' Frogs by the Greek department have all enlarged the world in which twentieth-century American under graduates live. The many Off-campus contacts Of members Of the French, Spanish, and Italian departments further relate the College to the foreign-language groups here and abroad. Encouragement to foreign graduate students was given by the action instituting a Certificate in American Studies available for graduates Of foreign universities who cannot spend two years to acquire a master's degree but would like some evidence Of accomplishment for a year's study. Furthermore it is believed that a course to introduce foreign guests to American culture may be more profitable for visitors than one devoted to academic disciplines which might be pursued in any country and perhaps better in a graduate school Of a university. Undergraduates have contributed to the enrichment Of the College by giving part Of their gift to the 75th Anniversary Fund in the form Of scholarships for two displaced students from Europe. They assumed responsibility not only for the expenses (over and above tuition which was waived by the trustees) but will make necessary provision for vacation travel and entertain ment for the two young women who will enter next fall. This pre-anniversary year has been a good one for taking stock on a number Of matters. A special committee Of the Academic Council has been working on the formulation Of long term policies in connection with admission. Its work Of this year was largely an analysis Of present practice, resulting in a summary statement Of present practice which was adopted by the Academic Council as a basis for further deliberations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellesley College Bulletin: Annual Reports President and Treasurer 1927-1928 To the Board of Trustees: I have the honor to present my report for the year closing June 30, 1928. The full history of the year can be learned only by consulting the reports of the other administrative officers, including those of the Deans, the Librarian, the Chairman of the Committee on Graduate Instruction, and of the Treasurer. There have been various changes in the Board of Trustees during the year under review. The most significant of these is the resignation of the Treasurer of the College, Mr. Lewis Kennedy Morse, in January, 1928. The value set by the trustees upon the service of Mr. Morse as Treasurer is indicated by the following resolution adopted by the Board at their meeting on March 9: In accepting the resignation of the Treasurer of the College, Mr. Lewis Kennedy Morse, the trustees wish to place on record their deep appreciation of his service to the College. Mr. Morse was elected to the Board in November, 1912; he became Assistant Treasurer in May, 1913, and Treasurer January 1, 1914.During Mr. Morses term as Treasurer, the College has undertaken three campaigns for funds: the million-dollar fund for salary endowment, begun in 1913 and merged after the fire of March, 1914, with the Restoration Fund, amounting with the insurance award to nearly three million; the first phase of the Semi-Centennial Fund of $2, 700, 000, completed in June, 1921; and the later phase of the Semi-Centennial Fund still in progress, amounting on January 1, 1928, to $4, 553, 260. At the close of the fiscal year 1912-13, the Trust Funds of the College amounted to $1, 364, 677; on June 30, 1927, the Treasurers Report shows the Trust Funds to be $8, 520, 418, of which $5, 866, 874 is permanent endowment. With the assistance of the Finance Committee, the Treasurer has had the handling and investing of these funds. How ably Mr. Morse has accomplished his task is shown by the statement of the auditors that on December 31, 1927, the market value of the securities held by the College exceeded the book value by approximately $1,500,000. Book Bulletin of Wellesley College Vol 43

Download or read book Bulletin of Wellesley College Vol 43 written by Wellesley College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of Wellesley College, Vol. 43: President's Report and Statistical Studies of the College; January, 1954 Health lectures, a traditional part of the required freshman program, were under revision throughout the period in question. It has long been evident that personal health knowledge is so varied among entering students that a common course benefits few of them and that most college students are not interested in public health, in spite of one's wishing them to be interested. Informal dormitory discussions with the college psychiatrist and an occasional lecture in an extracurricular series on aspects of health seem to be proving more useful. The few examples cited above are intended to suggest the vitality of the annual review of academic offerings. The reten tion of the basic curriculum indicates satisfaction among the faculty, which students give every evidence of Sharing, but not complacency. Nor are we without academic problems. Too many departments reply, when asked what needs or desires they have, that they wish more elections by freshmen. The number of students who take further work in a subject, once having tried it, is heartening. But relatively few students elect on en trance work in Greek, Latin, Italian, or German, and though it is the second largest language department, the department of Spanish is aware of decreasing freshman elections. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wellesley College Bulletin: Annual Reports, President and Treasurer, 1918-1919 I have the honor to present a report for the year closing June 30, 1919. As usual the supplementary reports of the Dean, the Librarian, and the Chairman of the Committee on Graduate Instruction are published in full. During the year death has removed one more member of the early faculty of the College, Miss Mary Elisabeth Horton, Pro fessor of Greek from the opening in 1875 to her resignation in 1887. Miss Horton died at her home in Wellesley, July 30, 1918, the last of the heads of department appointed by the founder. Miss Horton was largely self - taught, but she had the nature of the true scholar, - precision, enthusiasm, a keen and original mind, and power of intense application. As a resident of Wellesley, she was from the first cognizant of Mr. Durant's plans, and she entered with characteristic ardor into the realiza tion of them. Her students loved her Greek and they loved her. Year after year as they returned to visit the College, they sought Miss Horton for sympathy, for renewal of inspiration, and not less for the enjoyment of that delicate, Sportive humor which completed her vivid charm. In bequeathing to the College her estate on Washington Street, a gift most gratefully and reverently accepted, Miss Horton set the seal upon a life time of devotion. The College has also lost by death two active members of the teaching staff. On March 5 Caroline Angeline Hardwicke, Assistant Professor of Reading and Speaking, died in Jamaica Plain after an illness of several months. Miss Hardwicke came to the College as instructor in 1912 and received her promotion in 1917. She brought to her work the qualities of a logical and constructive mind, appreciation of aesthetic values, clear judgment, tireless energy, enthusiasm, vital interest in her students.
