Book Reconstructing Mass Balance of South Cascade Glacier Using Tree ring Records

Download or read book Reconstructing Mass Balance of South Cascade Glacier Using Tree ring Records written by Kailey Marcinkowski and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain hemlock growth chronologies were used to reconstruct the mass balance of South Cascade Glacier, an alpine glacier in the North Cascade Range of Washington State (USA). The net balance reconstruction spans 350 years, from 1659 to 2009. Summer and winter balances were also reconstructed for 1346-2009 and 1615-2009, respectively. Relationships between mass balance and winter precipitation, temperature, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation index, and the El Niño Southern Oscillation index suggest that these climatic variables and indices influence glacier balance fluctuations at various temporal scales. Periods of above-average net, summer, and winter mass balance occurred mainly in 1790-1800, 1810-1820, 1845-1860, 1865-1890, and 1970-1990. Above- and below-average reconstructed mass balances at South Cascade Glacier were concurrent with similar periods from other glacier balance reconstructions and moraine dates in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Agreement among these records suggests that changes in South Cascade Glacier mass balance are good indicators of regional balance fluctuations, and glaciers in the Pacific Northwest are responding similarly to regional external climate forcings. The current rate of decline, from 2000 to 2009, in the reconstructed mass balance record has been faster than any other decline in a century. This decreasing trend is projected to continue in accordance with increasing temperatures, and will likely affect glacier-influenced water resources in the Pacific Northwest.

Book Tree ring Measurements as a Proxy of Glacier Mass Balance at Mount Baker Washington USA

Download or read book Tree ring Measurements as a Proxy of Glacier Mass Balance at Mount Baker Washington USA written by Amanda M. Doremus and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 243-year mass balance record was reconstructed for Easton Glacier at Mount Baker, Washington, USA, using annual ring-width measurements of mountain hemlock tree cores. Tree cores were collected on the lateral moraines of Easton Glacier and were measured and analyzed to create a site tree-ring chronology. The tree-ring chronology presented in this study responds to the same climatic forcings as glacier mass balance, mainly wintertime precipitation and summertime temperatures, providing validation for our linear regression model which uses the tree-ring chronology to reconstruct glacier annual net mass balance. Transformations were tested and applied to the data to improve the performance of the model, and a final mass-balance record for Easton Glacier and a regional index were created and analyzed for the period of AD 1770-2012. The final Easton Glacier and regional reconstructions explain 48% and 42%, respectively, of the variance in the mass balance data. Periods of above-average mass balance of Easton Glacier were identified between AD 1800-1820, AD 1845-1853, AD 1893-1927, and AD 1952-1985. Periods of predominately below-average mass balance were shown between AD 1780-1800, AD 1834-1844, AD 1884-1892, AD 1928-1951, and AD 1985-2005. Our record is consistent with known dated moraine positions and with other proxy records in the surrounding region. It also corresponds well with positive and negative phases of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, emphasizing the influence of wintertime precipitation variability on the mass balance of glaciers in the North Cascades.

Book Modeled and Measured Glacier Change and Related Glaciological Hydrological and Meteorological Conditions at South Cascade Glacier Washington Balan

Download or read book Modeled and Measured Glacier Change and Related Glaciological Hydrological and Meteorological Conditions at South Cascade Glacier Washington Balan written by William R Bidlake and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter snow accumulation and summer snow and ice ablation were measured at South Cascade Glacier, Washington, to estimate glacier mass balance quantities for balance years 2006 and 2007. Mass balances were computed with assistance from a new model that was based on the works of other glacier researchers. The model, which was developed for mass balance practitioners, coupled selected meteorological and glaciological data to systematically estimate daily mass balance at selected glacier sites. The North Cascade Range in the vicinity of South Cascade Glacier accumulated approximately average to above average winter snow packs during 2006 and 2007. Correspondingly, the balance years 2006 and 2007 maximum winter snow mass balances of South Cascade Glacier, 2.61 and 3.41 meters water equivalent, respectively, were approximately equal to or more positive (larger) than the average of such balances since 1959. The 2006 glacier summer balance, -4.20 meters water equivalent, was among the four most negative since 1959. The 2007 glacier summer balance, -3.63 meters water equivalent, was among the 14 most negative since 1959. The glacier continued to lose mass during 2006 and 2007, as it commonly has since 1953, but the loss was much smaller during 2007 than during 2006. The 2006 glacier net balance, -1.59 meters water equivalent, was 1.02 meters water equivalent more negative (smaller) than the average during 1953-2005. The 2007 glacier net balance, -0.22 meters water equivalent, was 0.37 meters water equivalent less negative (larger) than the average during 1953-2006. The 2006 accumulation area ratio was less than 0.10, owing to isolated patches of accumulated snow that endured the 2006 summer season. The 2006 equilibrium line altitude was higher than the glacier. The 2007 accumulation area ratio and equilibrium line altitude were 0.60 and 1,880 meters, respectively.
