Download or read book The Geology of Washington and Beyond written by Eric S. Cheney and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 20 chapters of The Geology of Washington and Beyond--an outgrowth of a geologic symposium--present the substantial advances in recent research on the geologic history of Washington State. The 32 contributors used new conceptual developments such as sequence stratigraphy, identification and matching of terranes, and neotechtonics, as well as breakthroughs in technology such as lidar mapping, paleomagnetism, and new methods of radiometric dating, to examine the fascinating geology of Washington State and beyond. Also included is geologic mapping in areas previously known only by reconnaissance. This book will influence resource management decisions, as well as disaster and land-use planning in the region. The introductory chapters make the book accessible for undergraduate courses in geology and to the general public.
Download or read book The Tectonic Setting and Origin of Cretaceous Batholiths within the North American Cordillera written by Robert S. Hildebrand and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Special Paper, Hildebrand and Whalen present a big-picture, paradigm-busting synthesis that examines the tectonic setting, temporal relations, and geochemistry of many plutons within Cretaceous batholithic terranes of the North American Cordillera. In addition to their compelling tectonic synthesis, they argue that most of the batholiths are not products of arc magmatism as commonly believed, but instead were formed by slab failure during and after collision. They show that slab window and Precambrian TTG suites share many geochemical similarities with Cretaceous slab failure rocks. Geochemical and isotopic data indicate that the slab failure magmas were derived dominantly from the mantle and thus have been one of the largest contributors to growth of continental crust. The authors also note that slab failure plutons emplaced into the epizone are commonly associated with Cu-Au porphyries, as well as Li-Cs-Ta pegmatites.

"Cut off from the world for months at a time, the Jordans became virtually self-sufficient. Short of cash but long on courage, they raised and preserved their food, made their own soap, and educated their children."-Sterling North, New York World-Telegram "Home Below Hell's Canyon is valuable because it writes a little-known way of life into the national chronicle. We are put in touch with the kind of people who set the country on its feet and in the generations since have kept it there. . . . Primarily it is a book of courage and effort tempered by the warmth of those who trust in goodness and practice it."-Christian Science Monitor "The thrilling story of a modern pioneer family. . . . An intensely human account filled with fun, courage and rich family life."-Seattle Post Intelligencer

This book was released on 1999 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conducted to identify methods that have been used in the repair and rehabilitation of concrete dams. Information was obtained through literary searches, discussions with project personnel, and visits to project sites. Each case history includes a background of the project, the deficiency that necessitated repair or rehabilitation, and descriptions of materials and methods used in the repair or rehabilitation. When available, the cost of the repair project and the performance of the repair to date have been included. Case histories included in this report cover a range of deficiencies in concrete structures, including cracking, spalling, erosion, leakage, inadequate PMF capacity, expansion resulting from alkali-aggregate reaction, instability, and insufficient storage capacity.
