Download or read book The Reconciliation of Races and Religions Classic Reprint written by Thomas Kelly Cheyne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconciliation of Races and Religions The primary aim of this work is twofold. It would fain contribute to the cause of' universal peace, and promote the better understanding of the various religions which really are but one religion. The union of religions must necessarily precede the union of races, which at present is so lamentably incomplete. It appears to me that none of the men or women of good-will is justified in withholding any suggestions which may have occurred to him. For the crisis, both political and religious, is alarming. Book excerpt: A slave runs away from his master. A mutual friend steps in to mediate between the two of them. Can there be healing in such a scarred relationship? In the face of such a daunting breach, is reconciliation (not to what was, but to what God designed) even possible? This is the situation faced in the book of Philemon. From this short New Testament letter, pastor and author Dhati Lewis (Among Wolves) unpacks key principles that Paul applied to being an advocate in the midst of division. The divisions of our day don’t look the same as Paul’s, but the principles are timeless. In 2 Corinthians 5, God commissioned us to be his ambassadors and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. Whether we’re engaging in issues of politics, ethnicity, or religious beliefs, our heart posture should be one of an advocate set on reconciliation. The problem is, too many of us approach difficult conversations with the heart of an aggravator. Aggravators sometimes look like they are pursuing good things, but their heart is not toward reconciliation. Any motive less than reconciliation falls short of the desires of God’s heart. We need godly advocates in every sphere of life. This book will specifically apply these principles to issues of ethnic division. Are you willing to call any division caused by discrimination, prejudice, or racism a sin? Do you want to grow in your ability to navigate tense and emotional conversations about ethnic divisions? Are you ready to become an advocate?

He looks at a wide range of figures, such as Howard O. Jones, Tom Skinner, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jesse Jackson and John Perkins. Charting progress as well as setbacks, his words offer encouragement for black evangelicals feeling alone, clarity for white evangelicals who want to understand more deeply, and fresh vision for all who want to move forward toward Christ's prayer "that all of them may be one." Market/Audience African Americans Multiethnic churches, ministries and networks People involved in racial reconciliation Endorsements "Edward Gilbreath is one of the nation's foremost journalists on Christianity and race. Reconciliation Blues is a spellbinding first-person look into his world as he has navigated white evangelicalism. Emerson, Cline Professor of Sociology and founding director of the Center on Race, Religion, and Urban Life, Rice University "Edward Gilbreath is a gentle prophet. He forces us to take another look at an issue that many wish would go away, but he does so in a way that encourages us to live up to what we believe. Book The Gospel in Black and White

Download or read book The Gospel in Black and White written by Dennis L. Okholm and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After signal victories of the civil rights movement in the sixties, recent events have shown that the divide between black and white Americans remains alarmingly wide. And as African- and Euro-Americans perhaps increasingly find themselves at odds politically and culturally, Sunday-morning worship dismayingly remains the most segregated hour of the week.Yet Christians of both races affirm that the gospel calls them together, that they at least should be one people, of one Lord, one faith, one baptism. In that spirit, the incisive and challenging essays in this book consider what rigorous theological work can contribute to the noble and ongoing quest for racial reconciliation. Some of the church's most exciting black and white thinkers are gathered here by editor Dennis Okholm to address issues of theological method, hermeneutics, soteriology, ecclesiology and social ethics--always with an eye to closing the gaping wound of racism and serving God's kingdom across color lines.

Download or read book Heal Us Emmanuel written by Doug Serven and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Christians would say they believe all people are made in the image of God and are equal before him. They would say red, brown, yellow, black, and white, they are precious in his sight. But do they have any friends of another race? Is there anyone at their church who does not look like them? Does this matter to God? The majority of American Christians do not have significant relationships with anyone who does not look like them, which makes them susceptible to cultural blind spots and less effective as ambassadors for biblical justice. The thirty church leaders who contributed to Heal Us, Emmanuel desire racial reconciliation, representation, and supernatural unity in all the churches of Christ.

Book Unreconciled

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrea Smith
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2019-12-13
  • ISBN : 1478007036

Download or read book Unreconciled written by Andrea Smith and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, many evangelical Christian organizations and church leaders began to acknowledge their long history of racism and launched efforts at becoming more inclusive of people of color. While much of this racial reconciliation movement has not directly confronted systemic racism's structural causes, there exists a smaller countermovement within evangelicalism, primarily led by women of color who are actively engaged in antiracism and social justice struggles. In Unreconciled Andrea Smith examines these movements through a critical ethnic studies lens, evaluating the varying degrees to which evangelical communities that were founded on white supremacy have addressed racism. Drawing on evangelical publications, sermons, and organization statements, as well as ethnographic fieldwork and participation in evangelical events, Smith shows how evangelicalism is largely unable to effectively challenge white supremacy due to its reliance upon discourses of whiteness. At the same time, the work of progressive evangelical women of color not only demonstrates that evangelical Christianity can be an unexpected place in which to find theoretical critique and social justice organizing but also shows how critical ethnic studies' interventions can be applied broadly across political and religious divides outside the academy.
