Book Applying the Building Code

Download or read book Applying the Building Code written by Ronald L. Geren and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other resource—not even the building code—presents the exact code information you need, when you need it at design stage The International Building Code (IBC) is a model building code developed by the International Code Council (ICC). The IBC and its complementary codes provide design and construction professionals with a complete set of comprehensive, coordinated building safety and fire prevention regulations in order to safeguard the public health and general welfare of the occupants of new and existing buildings and structures. Adopted throughout most of the United States and its territories, it is referenced by federal agencies, such as the General Services Administration, National Park Service, Department of State, U.S. Forest Service, and the Department of Defense. For architects and other design and construction professionals, it is particularly important that they understand how to apply the IBC and how code officials view buildings, so that they integrate code-required provisions in the earliest design stages of any project. Applying the IBC, as well as its companion codes, to building design is a process that is uniquely different to that of applying the building code during a planning review. Whereas other guide books explain the IBC in sequential order, from cover to cover, chapter by chapter, and section by section, Applying the Building Code explains the requirements of the IBC as they would apply during the common phases of design: from schematic design through to the preparation of construction documents. This effectively highlights applicable requirements of the building code at the appropriate stage of design based on available information. The book provides a 28-step process that is organized according to the three phases of architectural design: schematic design, design development, and construction documents Each step explains the application of the IBC, as well as other codes and standards referenced by the IBC (i.e. International Fire Code, International Energy Conservation Code, and ANSI A117.1) based on available project information Illustrations and examples are provided throughout that explain the code fundamentals associated with each step A single example project is used throughout the step-by-step process to illustrate how each step is applied and builds upon code and project information obtained through previous steps Guidance is also provided on the International Existing Building Code and how the step-by-step process is applied to projects involving existing buildings The role of the building department and its staff in regard to plan reviews and code enforcement is discussed A detailed code data information template is provided that can help organize code-related information for construction documents

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unleash the design potential in codes Building codes and standards are often seen as obstacles to design excellence. Not any more! With the help of this down-to-earth guide, architecture professionals and students can stop dreading these rules and start using them to their advantage. Cracking the Codes makes codes and standards accessible by promoting a sound understanding of regulatory issues --without getting caught up in the minutiae. The book works the way projects do, moving through each stage of the planning process to identify and consolidate the basic regulatory requirements that must be addressed at every step along the way. It equips readers not only to recognize issues that call for regulatory research and to work effectively with appropriate consultants, but also to suggest strategic directions that are compatible with regulatory requirements and to make informed decisions in response to consultants' advice. In addition to the model building codes, including the forthcoming International Building Code, this book covers zoning ordinances and covenants, as well as rules related to accessibility, historic preservation, environmental quality, consumer protection, and a host of other critical issues. Information is extensively cross-referenced to make topics simple to find, and the uniform methodology applied to each regulatory issue makes the book both easy to follow and design-friendly. No project team should ever be held hostage by lack of familiarity with codes and standards. Cracking the Codes gives architects the freedom they need to break the rules without breaking the regulations.

Book Fire Protection Engineering Applications for Large Transportation Systems in China

Download or read book Fire Protection Engineering Applications for Large Transportation Systems in China written by Fang Li and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid development of China’s transportation system brings huge challenges to fire safety issues. Fire Protection Engineering Applications for Large Transportation Systems in Chinaanalyzes key fire issues for large transportation systems in rail, airport, tunnels, etc. and offers solutions and best practices for similar projects throughout the world. The first monograph to look at transportation hub fire issues in China looks at architecture features, occupancy and area classification, fire hazard and design difficulties based on local code design. The book then provides case studies to identity the common problems and introduces possible solutions in order to develop a best practice for future design and improvement. The authors worked directly on the case studies provided, which include the Hongqiao airport transportation hub, Beijing and Pudoing airport PBD study, subways in different cities and the high speed train system Cross China. They use their research and investigation to form the theoretical basis for the fire design of urban large transportation hubs and the establishment of corresponding fire codes. The cutting-edge technologies discussed include: Smoke control strategy in complicated multiple function space, assistant evacuation performance based study new technology on fire separation new fire products for smoke detection and intelligent guiding system for evacuation BIM and internet of things used to improve fire management
