Book excerpt: This report presents the consensus recommendations of the Basin and Range Province Earthquake Working Group II (BRPEWG II) to the U.S. Geological Survey National Seismic Hazard Mapping Program (NSHMP) regarding eight Basin and Range Province (BRP) seismic-hazard issues important to the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) 2014 update of the National Seismic Hazard Maps (NSHMs).

Book Incorporating Induced Seismicity in the 2014 United States National Seismic Hazard Model Results of 2014 Workshop and Sensitivity Studies

Download or read book Incorporating Induced Seismicity in the 2014 United States National Seismic Hazard Model Results of 2014 Workshop and Sensitivity Studies written by U. S. Geological Survey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-10-18 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating Induced Seismicity in the 2014 United States National Seismic Hazard Model: Results of 2014 Workshop and SensThe U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) for the conterminous United States was updated in 2014 to account for new methods, input models, and data necessary for assessing the seismic ground shaking hazard from natural (tectonic) earthquakes. The USGS NSHM project uses probabilistic seismic hazard analysis to quantify the rate of exceedance for earthquake ground shaking (ground motion). For the 2014 NSHM assessment, the seismic hazard from potentially induced earthquakes was intentionally not considered because we had not determined how to properly treat these earthquakes for the seismic hazard analysis. The phrases "potentially induced" and "induced" are used interchangeably in this report, however it is acknowledged that this classification is based on circumstantial evidence and scientific judgment.

Book 2016GUIDELINES FOR INVESTIGATING GEOLOGIC HAZARDS AND PREPARING ENGINEERING GEOLOGY REPORTS WITH A SUGGESTED APPROACH TO GEOLOGIC HAZARD ORDINANCES IN UTAH

Download or read book 2016GUIDELINES FOR INVESTIGATING GEOLOGIC HAZARDS AND PREPARING ENGINEERING GEOLOGY REPORTS WITH A SUGGESTED APPROACH TO GEOLOGIC HAZARD ORDINANCES IN UTAH written by Steve D. Bowman and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of these guidelines for investigating geologic hazards and preparing engineering-geology reports, is to provide recommendations for appropriate, minimum investigative techniques, standards, and report content to ensure adequate geologic site characterization and geologic-hazard investigations to protect public safety and facilitate risk reduction. Such investigations provide important information on site geologic conditions that may affect or be affected by development, as well as the type and severity of geologic hazards at a site, and recommend solutions to mitigate the effects and the cost of the hazards, both at the time of construction and over the life of the development. The accompanying suggested approach to geologic-hazard ordinances and school-site investigation guidelines are intended as an aid for land-use planning and regulation by local Utah jurisdictions and school districts, respectively. Geologic hazards that are not accounted for in project planning and design often result in additional unforeseen construction and/or future maintenance costs, and possible injury or death.

Download or read book Weaving a National Map written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-01-24 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving a National Map draws on contributions to a September 2002 workshop and the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) "vision" document for The National Map, envisioned by the USGS as a database providing "public domain core geographic data about the United States and its territories that other agencies can extend, enhance, and reference as they concentrate on maintaining other data that are unique to their needs." The demand for up-to-date information in real time for public welfare and safety informs this need to update an aging paper map series that is, on average, 23 years old. The NRC report describes how The National Map initiative would gain from improved definition so that the unprecedented number of partners needed for success will become energized to participate. The challenges faced by USGS in implementing The National Map are more organizational than technical. To succeed, the USGS will need to continue to learn from challenges encountered in its ongoing pilot studies as well as from other federal-led programs that have partnered with multiple sectors.

This book was released on 2023-08-03 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A little over a decade ago, the southern midcontinent, USA, began experiencing more earthquakes and attention focused on how disposal of large volumes of brine from oil production could trigger earthquakes. This volume examines that phenomenon in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico, and details the regulatory response to it"--
