If any benefits had accrued to creditors from the existence of the system, it might be supposed they would have given their support to it from self - interest, however indefensible as part of a compact which governed their dealings and protected their property. But the fact was, it neither protected their property, nor put them in so good a situation to. It will arise from a mass of anecdotes, descriptions of persons and things, events, incidents, conversations, and correspondences, with which, and in which, he who attempts to convey it has been mixed up, or With the chief actors in which he has been personally acquainted. It is submitted that this method of conveying intelligence will be at least as effective, and certainly more pleasing than the pretence of wisdom or the authority of dictation. The writer is aware of the force of example, he would rather enlighten by the analogy of precedent than the vehemence of precept. Book The First Adman Thomas Bish and the Birth of Modern Advertising

Download or read book The First Adman Thomas Bish and the Birth of Modern Advertising written by Gary Hicks and published by Victorian Secrets. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First Adman reveals the untold story of how modern advertising was pioneered 200 years ago by the entrepreneur, self-publicist and dodgy Member of Parliament, Thomas Bish. Royalty and politicians courted this early media star and society figure, who was one of the best-known men in the land and allegedly more famous than the prime minister himself. Bish’s promotional creativity helped the old state lottery raise the equivalent of £2 billion for good causes, also bringing him great wealth. Hiring the essayist Charles Lamb as a copywriter and George Cruikshank to illustrate his advertisements, Bish professionalised ad campaigns. Techniques he pioneered include spin-doctoring, graphic design, modern typography, direct marketing, and even early market research. Unfortunately, his talents did not prevent him from being expelled from both the Stock Exchange and the House of Commons. Drawing on previously inaccessible contemporary sources, Gary Hicks resurrects the Bish brand, as famous in its day as Coca-Cola is today, and explains how it started a publicity revolution. This is an entertaining and rollicking tale of an eccentric marketing genius whose extraordinary legacy survives in modern mass media. Includes illustrations by political cartoonist Simon Groves

Book The Hanging Tree

    Book Details:
  • Author : V. A. C. Gatrell
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN : 9780192853325
  • Pages : 660 pages

Download or read book The Hanging Tree written by V. A. C. Gatrell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of mentalities, emotions, and attitudes rather than of policies and ideas, it analyses responses to the scaffold at all social levels: among the crowds which gathered to watch executions; among 'polite' commentators from Boswell and Byron on to Fry, Thackeray, and Dickens; and among the judges, home secretary, and monarch who decided who should hang and who should be reprieved. Drawing on letters, diaries, ballads, broadsides, and images, as well as on poignant appeals for mercy which historians until now have barely explored, the book surveys changing attitudes to death and suffering, 'sensibility' and 'sympathy', and demonstrates that the long retreat from public hanging owed less to the growth of a humane sensibility than to the development of new methods of punishment and law enforcement, and to polite classes' deepening squeamishness and fear of the scaffold crowd.

Book London Chartism 1838 1848

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Goodway
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-10-10
  • ISBN : 9780521893640
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book London Chartism 1838 1848 written by David Goodway and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first full-length study of metropolitan Chartism, provides extensive new material for the 1840s and establishes the regional and national importance of the London movement throughout this decade. After an opening section which considers the economic and social structure of early-Victorian London, and provides an occupational breakdown of Chartists, Dr Goodway turns to the three main components of the metropolitan movement: its organized form; the crowd; and the trades. The development of London Chartism is correlated to economic fluctuations, and, after the nationally significant failure of London to respond in 1838-9, 1842 is seen as a peak in terms of conventional organization, and 1848 as the high point of turbulence and revolutionary potential. The section concludes with an exposition of the insurrectionary plans of 1848.

Book William Maginn and the British Press

Download or read book William Maginn and the British Press written by David E. Latané and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first scholarly treatment of the life of William Maginn (1794-1842), David Latané’s meticulously researched biography follows Maginn’s life from his early days in Ireland through his career in Paris and London as political journalist and writer and finally to his sad decline and incarceration in debtor’s prison. A founding editor of the daily Standard (1827), Maginn was a prodigal author and editor. He was an early and influential contributor to Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, and a writer from the Tory side for The Age, New Times, English Gentleman, Representative, John Bull, and many other papers. In 1830, he launched Fraser’s Magazine for Town and Country, the early venue for such Victorians as Thackeray and Carlyle, and he was intimately involved with the poet 'L.E.L.' In 1837, he wrote the prologue for the first issue of Bentley’s Miscellany, edited by Dickens. Through painstaking archival research into Maginn’s surviving letters and manuscripts, as well as those of his associates, Latané restores Maginn to his proper place in the history of nineteenth-century print culture. His book is essential reading for nineteenth-century scholars, historians of the book and periodical, and anyone interested in questions of authorship in the period.
